Which campaign is better for solo players? There is no solo-only head-to-head test that proves one is better for everyone. Choose Gears of War: E-Day if you want the Emergence Day origin story about young Marcus and Dom, and a return to classic Gears action. Choose Gears 5 if Kait Diaz’s story is the draw or you would rather play its established campaign. Xbox confirms E-Day can be played solo; the choice comes down to the story and style you want.

Gears of War: E-Day follows Marcus and Dom
Xbox describes E-Day as an origin story set fourteen years before the original Gears of War. It follows young Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago as the Locust attack begins. That makes it the more direct choice if you want to experience the series’ defining catastrophe and see its familiar heroes at the start of their story. Xbox’s E-Day page confirms its premise.
Gears 5 puts Kait Diaz at the center
Gears 5 centers on Kait Diaz investigating her connection to the enemy. It is the choice for players more interested in Kait’s character arc than a Marcus-and-Dom prequel. Xbox’s Gears 5 product page describes the campaign and its co-op options.
How the campaigns differ in play and pace
The available reviews point to different strengths, but they are critics’ assessments rather than a controlled comparison of solo play.

- E-Day: VGC reviewer Chris Scullion’s October 1, 2026 review praises the force of its action and gunplay, while arguing that the story takes a back seat to combat. Scullion characterizes it as mostly a return to classic Gears action. Windows Central’s in-progress campaign review, accessed October 3, 2026, praises the visuals, gunplay, and increased mobility but says the overall structure holds the game back. - Gears 5: VGC notes that its larger Skiff sections were divisive: some players welcomed the change of pace, while others found them light on content and a distraction from the series’ linear combat. That is one reviewer’s comparison, not a universal verdict on the game or its solo campaign.
So, if you want a campaign reviewers describe as closer to classic, focused Gears combat, E-Day is the likelier fit. If the broader change of pace in Gears 5 appeals to you, that may matter more than a return to the older formula.
Can you play E-Day solo?
Yes. Xbox explicitly says, “Experience the campaign solo, in two-player split-screen co-op on console, or with up to four players in online co-op.” Its campaign preview also confirms solo and co-op options. Xbox Wire’s E-Day campaign preview notes that online co-op requires a Game Pass subscription that includes online multiplayer.

For context, Xbox lists Gears 5 campaign co-op for up to three players online or in split-screen. Those player counts describe co-op availability; they do not establish how either campaign is balanced for one player or how companion AI performs.
Accessibility and platform details to consider
Xbox’s Gears 5 listing documents full controller remapping, single-stick movement, Adaptive Controller support, narrated UI and menus, and improved subtitles. These are the features stated on that listing, not evidence that E-Day lacks accessibility options; the E-Day sources cited here do not provide an equivalent full inventory.

On the research date, October 4, 2026, Xbox listed E-Day for Xbox Series X|S and PC, with day-one availability on Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. The listing gave October 6, 2026 as the release date, with Premium Edition early access starting October 1; it listed Standard at $69.99 and Premium at $99.99.
