Gears of War: E-Day keeps the series’ cover-centered combat, but expands how players move between and around cover. The Coalition describes more cover types and heights, including low-ground positions, while Xbox Wire’s campaign preview reports sliding, jumping and vertical routes that open additional flanking options. Weapons and the combat setting change too. Some familiar features—notably Meat Shields and Chainsaw Duels—are not included at launch, according to the developer.
Does E-Day still use cover-based combat?
Yes. Cover remains a central part of E-Day’s combat, rather than a system the game is moving away from. The Coalition says reading the battlefield and moving from cover to cover remain core to Gears, and that the new game rebuilds the cover system around more types, heights and actions. As the developer puts it, “Our battlefields are defined by their cover layout.” (The Coalition, July 31, 2026; The Coalition.)
More ways to use the terrain
The change is in the range of positions and transitions available. The Coalition describes low-ground cover such as walls and debris, and says a Gear can drop prone when upper cover is destroyed. That position is slower and leaves the character more exposed, so it is a tactical fallback rather than a safer replacement for ordinary cover. The developer has not published a complete mechanic-by-mechanic comparison with the original game.
Can you slide and jump in E-Day?
Yes. Xbox Wire’s August 25, 2026 campaign preview describes sliding under objects, around corners and into cover, as well as jumping and vertical combat routes. Its examples include reaching balconies and elevated positions to flank enemies. The Coalition also characterizes E-Day’s movement as more fluid and mobile.

These are added options for navigating a fight, not evidence that the original had no movement or that E-Day is measurably faster. Official sources describe the new game’s intended movement and selected preview encounters; they do not provide comparative timing tests against the original. How are the weapons different?
E-Day adjusts familiar weapons and introduces new ones, rather than presenting the arsenal as a set of direct remakes. The Coalition’s examples include a Hammerburst built around the original Gears version and a Prototype Lancer designed with a deeper magazine and higher rate of fire than recent Lancers. Xbox Wire’s preview also names the close-range Gnasher, precision Longshot and new Gut Puncher.

The chainsaw Lancer has an origin story
E-Day is set fourteen years before the original Gears of War, when the Locust first emerge. In the game’s timeline, the chainsaw Lancer has not yet become the established weapon familiar from later entries. The 2024 Xbox Wire interview describes the reveal’s MK 1 Lancer as having a detachable bayonet and frames E-Day as telling the chainsaw Lancer’s origin. Brand Director Nicole Fawcette explained the balancing act: “[The Chainsaw Lancer] doesn’t currently exist in that period… but it’s not a Gears game if you’re not chainsawing Locust!” (Xbox Wire, June 9, 2024.)
How does the setting change the feel of encounters?
E-Day takes place during the first Locust emergence, so its combat is framed around an enemy humanity is encountering as a new horror. The Coalition describes the Drone as redesigned to feel more imposing, and Xbox Wire’s preview discusses emergence holes as a reactive encounter mechanic. Those details point to a different threat context and encounter presentation, not a proven improvement in enemy AI or a complete comparison of enemy statistics.

The setting also helps explain why E-Day treats the chainsaw Lancer as a battlefield innovation rather than simply assuming it is already part of the arsenal. Creative Director Matt Searcy described the aim as: “It’s going to feel like a new Gears game, because that’s what it is.” (Xbox Wire, June 9, 2024; Xbox Wire, August 25, 2026.)
Which familiar Gears mechanics are missing at launch?
The Coalition specifically says Meat Shields and Chainsaw Duels are not included at launch. It has left open the possibility of delivering or improving features after launch or in a future title, so “not included at launch” is the supported description—not “permanently removed.” The developer also says it could not include the full set of legacy features; that does not establish which other individual mechanics will or will not return. What the comparison can—and cannot—establish
The available official material supports a comparison of design direction and selected mechanics, not a full inventory of every difference or a controlled side-by-side test. It establishes that E-Day retains cover as a pillar while expanding cover situations and movement choices; it gives specific weapon examples and identifies two launch omissions. It does not establish comparative movement speed, definitive balance outcomes, or a complete original-game enemy and movement catalog.
