When Gears of War: Reloaded launched on August 26, 2025, its Steam reception was reported as mixed amid player complaints about startup crashes, matchmaking trouble and missing preorder skins. The Coalition said on August 29 that it had addressed Steam launch crashes and fixed access to the Adam Fenix and Anya Stroud preorder skins. That update did not say every reported problem was resolved. A separate source of frustration was a platform-specific feature gap: campaign split-screen is unavailable on PC and handhelds, although online co-op is supported.
What happened at launch?
Gears of War: Reloaded launched on August 26, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox PC, Xbox Cloud Gaming and Steam. Xbox Wire announced a $39.99 suggested retail price and day-one availability through PC Game Pass and Game Pass Ultimate; those were launch terms, not a statement of current price or availability. The release packages the original game with post-launch content, including a bonus campaign act, multiplayer maps, characters and cosmetics.
Launch-week coverage described Steam reviews as “mixed.” Reports included startup crashes and matchmaking complaints, alongside complaints about missing preorder items. That is a record of the launch period, not a current Steam rating or a claim that every player encountered these problems. GamesRadar reported individual Steam users’ startup-crash experiences; GameSpot also described the mixed launch reception and reported complaints.
Did the Steam crashes and missing preorder skins get fixed?
On August 29, 2025, The Coalition posted that it had addressed crashes on Steam when launching the game and resolved an issue preventing access to the Adam Fenix and Anya Stroud preorder skins. The studio also wrote, “We’ve seen a loud response and are excited to have brought Gears of War to more players.” The statement is specific to launch crashes and those two skins; it does not establish that matchmaking complaints, every crash scenario or other reported PC limitations were fixed.

If you were looking for those preorder characters during launch week, the developer’s update identified the access problem as resolved. It did not describe a separate fix procedure for players. Read The Coalition’s August 29 Steam announcement.
Why is campaign split-screen missing on PC?
The key distinction is platform support, not whether the game has campaign co-op at all. Xbox Wire’s May 2025 launch announcement used broad wording saying campaign co-op could be played “through campaign split-screen or online co-op.” The platform-specific Xbox store description clarifies that campaign split-screen is unavailable on PC and handhelds. Online campaign co-op remains available. GamesRadar documented that older Steam store wording included split-screen language and that the live copy later used online-only wording. That mismatch explains the confusion; it does not, by itself, establish that the wording change was intentional deception.

Campaign co-op supports two players. The official descriptions distinguish split-screen on supported platforms from online co-op, and the game also supports cross-play. Microsoft-account sign-in enables cross-progression and cross-platform invites, according to Xbox Wire; Steam’s launch-week information likewise described account sign-in for cross-platform squads and invites.

The official launch announcement also listed performance targets including 4K, 60 FPS in campaign and 120 FPS in multiplayer. These are announced targets, not a guarantee for every device or configuration; actual results depend on the platform and hardware.

What launch complaints should not be mistaken for current status?
Launch reporting is useful for understanding why the game opened to mixed Steam reviews, but it should not be read as a live status report. The August 29 update explicitly addressed Steam startup crashes and access to the two named preorder skins. GameSpot’s launch coverage also recorded complaints about matchmaking and a missing FOV slider, including reports concerning console matchmaking. The Coalition’s cited post does not state that those other issues were resolved.
No current Steam review percentage or review count is established by the cited launch reporting. For the same reason, launch-week descriptions such as “mixed” should remain attached to that period rather than presented as the game’s rating today.
