There are 33 COG tags in Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, arranged across five acts. This chapter-by-chapter guide lists every location in order, including the three tags in Act V’s added chapters. Use Crimson Omens as clues, but search the nearby space too: some tags are offset from the mark.
What to know before collecting COG tags
- Collecting tags unlocks pages in five digital graphic novels; all five books unlock once you collect all 33, according to Shacknews.
- Achievement thresholds are 11 tags for Time to Remember, 22 for Honor-Bound, and all 33 for For the Fallen. The cited XboxAchievements.com guide lists these for any difficulty.
- The locations below follow the chapter order in Daniel Perez’s August 24, 2015 Shacknews walkthrough. It reports that tag locations match the original Gears of War; the blue highlight is more prominent in Ultimate Edition.
Act I: Ashes
14 Years After E-Day
- After Marcus is released from his cell and chooses a route, enter the next room. The tag is directly beneath the Crimson Omen.
- In the room cut open by the Locust, go behind the pillar on the right side that bears the Crimson Omen.
- Enter the courtyard and take the first stairs on the left. At the Crimson Omen on the crumbled building, turn left; the tag is offset from the mark.
Trial By Fire
- After passing through a church, check behind cover to the right of the Crimson Omen. Minh Kim points out the tag.
- In the next church encounter, defeat the Locust emerging from the two holes, then check left of the exit.
Fish in a Barrel
- Clear the Locust in the dried-up fountain area. Face the Crimson Omen on the statue and turn left toward the stairs. Near the stairs, turn left again; the tag is beside the stairs near grenades.
Knock Knock
- Before climbing the steps to the fight, find the Crimson Omen on the van to the left. Go around the van’s left side; the tag is in front of a wall.
Hammer
- After the Wretch wave in the hallway where Jack opens a door, search behind the display tables on the opposite side of the room.
- After defeating the Seeder, enter the small church and go through the back door beneath the Crimson Omen. The tag is to the right of the dead soldier.
China Shop
- At the chapter start, turn around and follow the hallway toward the flames. The tag is at the end of the corridor.
- While luring the Berserker through the rooms, search the left side of the last room before going outside. The tag is on the ground in a small alcove.
- Outside, locate the Crimson Omen on the left side of the map (right if you are facing the door). Keep the Berserker away from that side and check behind the light post to the right of the mark.
Act II: Nightfall
Tick Tick Boom
- In the small industrial room where the squad regroups, go down the first stairs, jump the obstacle, then pass the next stairs and obstacles. The tag is beside a couch.
Grist
- In the turbine room, cross the metal platform and pass through the doors after the Wretch ambush. At the bottom of the stairs, turn around and enter the small alley; check behind the dumpster.
- Before entering the Stranded Settlement, find the Crimson Omen left of the gate. The tag is behind a tree and newspaper vending machines.
Lethal Dusk
- After the emergence-hole encounter between two cars, look left for a shed near a Crimson Omen. Shoot the propane tank inside to light the shed, then roadie-run over to the tag.
- After helping Dom down the dark road, use the lanterns to light the route. Point the spotlight at the rubble and cars near the entry, then return to the street. The tag is in front of the wrecked car by the spotlight.
Dark Labyrinth
- Exit the house to the street and turn right to see a Crimson Omen on a wrecked car. The tag is farther to the right.
Act III: Belly of the Beast
Downpour
- On the way to the elevator, look for buildings on the right. Go behind the building marked with a large “3,” then follow the long pier to the tag.
Evolution
- In the room with rotting floorboards, check the far-right corner. If the floor gives way, use the ladder to return to the level.
- After leaving the mine-cart control room, go down the stairs and turn right. The tag is beside the stairs; collect it before the cutscene.
Darkest Before Dawn
- At the split path, take the right branch rather than continuing left. The tag is a few feet in front of a Crimson Omen.
- After the waterfall and Locust fight, keep right toward the blue-lit platform. Turn right before its stairs to find the tag.
- After Marcus and Dom reunite in the yellow-lit imulsion area, turn right toward the two vehicles. Go behind the nearer vehicle and onto the small platform.
Act IV: The Long Road Ahead
The walkthrough’s heading calls this act “The Long Road Home”; the chapter locations below are listed under Act IV, “The Long Road Ahead.”

Campus Grinder
- Enter the campus and stay right. Climb the small platform, pass the first building, and go around the second. The tag is behind its staircase.
Bad to Worse
- At the chapter start, go straight to the car beneath the Crimson Omen on the wall. The tag is directly below the mark.
Imaginary Place
- In Fenix Estate, find the room with four pillars and a desk at one end. Destroy the desk with the Lancer or another weapon to reveal the tag.
Act V: Desperation
Comedy of Errors
- After the Wretch encounter in the old Stranded homes, cross the open garden. Turn left toward the Crimson Omen, go behind the broken gate, then continue past it to the tag and ammo.
Window Shopping
- At the start, walk through the garage and door. Instead of taking the first stairs up, continue to the second set and go down to the tag.
Jurassic Proportions
- Destroy the Brumak’s arm guns first for safety. Return toward where it spawned, find the Crimson Omen, then search behind the two concrete guardrails.
Train Wreck
- When Jack opens the passenger car at the chapter start, check left of the entrance.
- In the passenger car with two turrets above it, enter the car instead of climbing the ladder. The Crimson Omen is on the left; the tag is opposite it, below a window.
- In the fifth passenger car, release the cylinders. At the Crimson Omen, turn left into the car and press the green button by the door to reach the final tag.
Finding a tag you missed
Use the Crimson Omen as a search landmark, not a guarantee that the tag is directly beside it. Check around pillars, vehicles, stairs, cover, and nearby corners, and follow the direction cues in each entry. Several collectibles are tied to the encounter or route: keep the Berserker away from tag 12’s side of the area, light the shed for tag 16, and collect tag 21 before the cutscene.
