GeForce NOW is NVIDIA’s cloud-gaming service. It runs supported PC games on remote NVIDIA servers and streams the video to your computer, phone, tablet, TV, browser, or handheld. Your local device does not need to render the game, but you usually must already own the game—or have access through a supported subscription—and you still need a fast, stable, low-latency internet connection.
That makes GeForce NOW a strong option for playing demanding PC games on an older laptop, Mac, Chromebook, phone, TV, or handheld. It is less attractive if you need every PC game, extensive mod support, offline play, or the lowest possible input latency.
What is GeForce NOW?
Cloud gaming moves the demanding work from your home device to a remote data center. GeForce NOW runs the game on NVIDIA hardware, captures the resulting video and audio, and sends that stream over the internet. Your controller, keyboard, or mouse inputs travel in the opposite direction.

GeForce NOW is different from several related products:
- Buying a game: You purchase a license from a store such as Steam or Epic Games Store.
- Buying a cloud-gaming membership: You pay NVIDIA for access to its streaming service, but that membership usually does not include the games themselves.
- Renting a cloud PC: Services such as Shadow provide a more general-purpose Windows computer in the cloud. GeForce NOW is primarily a managed game-streaming service.
- Streaming from your own PC: Steam Remote Play streams games from a computer you own. GeForce NOW does not require you to own a gaming PC.
NVIDIA describes Ultimate as using RTX 5080-class cloud hardware, with 62 teraflops of compute performance and a 48GB frame buffer. Those are server specifications, not a promise that every game will perform exactly like a local RTX 5080 system. NVIDIA’s announcement also does not remove the service’s requirements for a supported game, suitable device, and good network.
NVIDIA’s homepage promotes thousands of games, but “available on GeForce NOW” does not generally mean “included with your membership.” You normally supply the underlying game entitlement.
Does GeForce NOW include games?
Usually, no. GeForce NOW supplies the remote hardware and streaming layer; you generally supply the game license.
NVIDIA currently lists integrations for:
- Steam
- Epic Games Store
- GOG
- PC Game Pass
- Ubisoft Connect
That does not mean every game on those services is supported. Support can depend on the exact title, storefront, edition, region, publisher launcher, subscription entitlement, DLC configuration, and NVIDIA’s current catalog.
Some games are Ready-to-Play: NVIDIA has prepared them on its infrastructure and they can normally launch without a long installation step. NVIDIA also promotes Install-to-Play for additional Steam games. That feature does not make every Steam game compatible, so check the official GeForce NOW games catalog before buying a title for cloud play.
Free-to-play games may not require a separate purchase, but you still need the relevant game account. For paid games, confirm that you own the PC version on the supported storefront. A console purchase and a PC entitlement should not be assumed to be interchangeable.
Check compatibility before subscribing
- Search for the exact game in NVIDIA’s live catalog.
- Confirm the listed storefront: Steam, Epic, GOG, Ubisoft Connect, or PC Game Pass.
- Confirm that your account owns the PC version or has the relevant subscription entitlement.
- Check whether your device and preferred input method are supported.
- Check how the game handles cloud saves, especially if it uses Install-to-Play.
GeForce NOW plans and pricing
The following are U.S. price signals from NVIDIA’s official materials. Prices, taxes, promotions, billing options, Day Pass availability, and plan terms can vary by country and may change. Confirm the final amount on the NVIDIA membership page before subscribing.

NVIDIA also offers Day Passes in some regions. Exact prices and availability must be checked at checkout. According to NVIDIA’s membership terms, fixed-term passes do not auto-renew, only one fixed-term pass may be purchased at a time, and a pass can end at its stated time—even if that terminates an active session.
Paid memberships generally renew automatically unless you cancel or change them before the applicable deadline. NVIDIA may change prices, and Alliance Partner regions can have different plans and terms.
What do Performance and Ultimate actually improve?
A paid plan is not simply a faster version of the free plan. Depending on the title, device, region, and current capacity, membership can affect server priority, queueing, session length, resolution, frame-rate options, RTX features, HDR, and access to games that require more capable cloud hardware.

NVIDIA says Premium membership is required for features including 4K/5K and ultrawide resolutions, RTX, HDR, Cloud G-SYNC, and high-refresh-rate modes on supported native PC apps. Exact limits vary by device and app.

Some games require a Premium membership because they may need 16GB of system memory, ray-tracing-capable GPUs, or other hardware capabilities unavailable on lower tiers. NVIDIA says the game’s details page should indicate when Premium is required; see its support explanation.
Which plan should you choose?
- Choose Free to test your network, confirm that your games launch, or play only occasionally. Do not assume a particular queue policy or unlimited access.
- Choose Performance if you play regularly, own supported games, mainly use a 60Hz or 120Hz display, and care more about practical access than maximum resolution and frame rate.
- Choose Ultimate if you have a suitable high-refresh display and connection and will actually use RTX, 4K, 5K, ultrawide, or very high frame-rate modes.
Ultimate is not automatically the best value. A 4K/240Hz display cannot compensate for unstable Wi-Fi, and a premium membership cannot eliminate internet or display latency.
Which devices work with GeForce NOW?
Device support and maximum quality are separate questions. A device may run GeForce NOW while lacking the local GPU, display port, browser capability, or input support needed for the highest streaming modes. NVIDIA’s current system requirements should be checked for your exact model.
Windows PCs
You can use the native Windows app or a supported browser. Higher-end modes may require a compatible local GPU, display, port, codec support, and membership. NVIDIA’s current Ultimate guidance lists GeForce RTX 30-series or newer, Intel Iris Plus or later, and AMD RDNA 3-class hardware for certain 5K/120fps configurations. Mac
NVIDIA lists macOS 10.15 or newer and Macs introduced in 2009 or later. You can use the native app or a supported browser, although browser and app feature limits differ.
Chromebook and ChromeOS
NVIDIA lists at least 4GB of RAM and Chrome 77 or later. Its requirements include up to 35 Mbps for QHD at 120fps under the listed conditions; Ultimate is required for 1600p/120fps on a compatible Chromebook.
Linux
Linux support is listed as beta. Current requirements include a dual-core x86/x64 CPU at 2GHz or faster, 4GB of RAM, and a modern GPU supporting H.264 or H.265 Vulkan video codecs. NVIDIA lists driver 580.126.07 or later for NVIDIA GPUs and recommends Mesa 24.2.8 for Intel and AMD GPUs using Mesa. NVIDIA says to reinstall the GeForce NOW app after installing a new host driver.
Browsers
NVIDIA currently lists Chrome 77 or later on Windows, macOS, and Chromebook; Edge 91 or later on Windows; Opera GX 117 or later on Windows or macOS; and Safari 16.4 or later on macOS. Browser sessions launch through play.geforcenow.com. Ultimate is required for QHD/120fps browser streaming under the listed requirements.
Android phones and tablets
NVIDIA lists Android 7.0 or later, at least 1GB of available memory, and OpenGL ES 2.0 or higher. Android includes an on-screen virtual gamepad, but a physical controller is much more suitable for serious play. Ultimate is required for listed 1440p/120fps capabilities.
iPhone and iPad
NVIDIA lists iOS/iPadOS 15.4 or later. Its guidance lists 15 Mbps for HD/60fps and 25 Mbps for FHD/60fps. A gamepad is required for gameplay; keyboard and mouse are mainly limited to navigation and text entry in Safari, so iPhone and iPad are not a straightforward replacement for a desktop setup.
Handhelds
NVIDIA lists GeForce NOW downloads for Steam Deck, ASUS ROG Ally, Lenovo Legion Go, and MSI Claw. It says the service comes preinstalled on Razer Edge and Logitech G Cloud. Ultimate can provide higher-resolution and higher-refresh-rate modes on supported handheld hardware, but the handheld’s screen and connection remain limiting factors.

Supported categories include NVIDIA SHIELD TV, selected LG TVs, selected Samsung TVs, Android TV, and selected Fire TV devices. Support is model-, year-, firmware-, and app-dependent. NVIDIA’s current page lists 2020–2025 LG TVs with current webOS firmware and 2020–2025 Samsung TVs, alongside separate requirements for Fire TV and Android TV.

On supported LG and Samsung TVs, keyboard and mouse can navigate the app but generally cannot be used for gameplay. A compatible controller is required. NVIDIA documents this limitation in its TV support guidance.
Internet requirements: bandwidth is only the beginning
NVIDIA recommends Ethernet or 5GHz Wi-Fi and latency below 80ms to a GeForce NOW data center. Its published bandwidth guidance is:

These are bandwidth targets, not guarantees. A connection can pass a download speed test and still stream badly because of ping, jitter, packet loss, Wi-Fi interference, bufferbloat, evening congestion, poor routing, or distance from the data center.
How to test properly
- Use Ethernet where practical.
- Otherwise use 5GHz Wi-Fi or newer Wi-Fi with a strong signal.
- Test on the same device and in the same room where you will play.
- Pause downloads, cloud backups, uploads, and large video streams.
- Test during your normal gaming hours, not only in the middle of the day.
- Use GeForce NOW’s in-app network test and examine latency and packet loss, not only download speed.
- If the connection is marginal, reduce stream resolution or frame rate before abandoning the service.
Controllers, keyboard, and mouse support
NVIDIA lists support for Xbox controllers, PlayStation DualSense and DualShock 4 controllers, NVIDIA SHIELD controllers in relevant contexts, and MFi Bluetooth controllers on iPhone and iPad. Other controllers may work after firmware or driver updates.
- Windows, macOS, Linux, and compatible browsers: Keyboard-and-mouse support is strongest. Browser pointer-lock permissions may be required; NVIDIA provides a pointer-lock guide.
- iPhone and iPad: A controller is required for gameplay. Safari keyboard-and-mouse use is not equivalent to desktop gameplay.
- TVs: A supported gamepad is required for gameplay. Keyboard and mouse generally only navigate the app.
- Android: The virtual gamepad can work for simple use, but a physical controller is preferable. Keyboard and mouse may require desktop mode or Samsung DeX; NVIDIA documents the setup here.
NVIDIA recommends a USB gaming mouse in several desktop configurations and suggests lowering the polling rate to 125Hz if mouse stutter occurs. That can address local mouse behavior, but it cannot fix network latency.
Resolution and frame-rate limits
There is no single GeForce NOW maximum. The result depends on your membership, device, native app or browser, display, local GPU and codec support, game, region, server capacity, and connection.

- Android streaming up to 1440p/120fps with Ultimate.
- Supported handhelds reaching QHD/90–120fps with Ultimate.
- SHIELD TV reaching up to 4K/60fps and HDR with Ultimate.
- Supported smart TVs reaching up to 4K/120fps under the listed conditions.
- Windows and macOS native apps supporting higher-resolution modes, including 5K and high-refresh-rate streaming, when local hardware and membership requirements are met.
A 120fps stream is not a guarantee that every game internally renders at 120fps. Game settings, server hardware, server load, display refresh rate, and stream stability all affect the final result.
How to set up GeForce NOW
- Create or sign in to an NVIDIA account.
- Choose Free, Performance, Ultimate, or an available fixed-term pass.
- Install the GeForce NOW app or open a supported browser.
- Sign in to the relevant game-store accounts.
- Search for a supported game.
- Select the correct store version.
- Launch the game.
- Complete any first-run publisher or store login.
- Adjust in-game graphics and GeForce NOW streaming settings.
- Before quitting, allow the game and store to finish synchronizing saves.
The game should open on NVIDIA’s remote system and appear as a streamed video feed. Inputs go to the cloud computer, while audio and video return to your device.
If a game does not appear
Check the exact title, storefront, edition, region, signed-in account, device support, temporary availability status, Install-to-Play status, and membership requirements. Do not buy a game solely because it runs on Steam; verify it in NVIDIA’s live catalog first.
If the game says you do not own it
Sign out of the launcher inside the session and sign in with the account that owns the PC version. Confirm the correct store edition, check whether the subscription entitlement is active, and remember that a publisher launcher may require separate authentication.

Games with their own cloud saves
These are generally the safest. The game’s save system synchronizes through the relevant store or publisher account, provided you use the correct account and allow synchronization to complete.

Games without reliable cloud saves
NVIDIA’s terms warn that games without cloud saves have a greater risk of losing saved games, especially if the game is removed from storage. This matters particularly for Install-to-Play titles and games that write saves only to the remote machine.
Persistent storage
NVIDIA’s terms state that eligible paid memberships may include single-session storage with an option to purchase persistent storage. Capacity, availability, and pricing should be checked in your account and region.
There is an important recovery limitation: NVIDIA says that if a storage plan is canceled, its contents are deleted at the end of the billing cycle and cannot be recovered. Downgrading storage is not directly supported; the terms say the current plan must first be canceled, which deletes its contents at the end of the cycle. Keep important saves in the game’s own supported cloud-save system whenever possible.

Is GeForce NOW good for competitive games?
It can be playable with an excellent connection, a nearby data center, wired networking, a low-latency display, and a responsive controller or mouse. It will not match the consistency and minimum input latency of a local installation because your input must travel to a remote computer and the resulting frame must travel back.
For competitive shooters and other timing-sensitive games, test the specific title before committing. Use Ethernet, enable your display’s game or low-latency mode, reduce stream quality if instability is present, and compare the experience at your normal gaming time. A smooth single-player experience does not prove that the same service will satisfy a competitive player.
Advantages and disadvantages
Advantages
- Runs demanding PC games on modest hardware.
- Works across computers, browsers, phones, tablets, TVs, and handhelds.
- Can use PC games you already own.
- Avoids building, upgrading, and maintaining a gaming PC.
- Provides access to RTX-capable cloud hardware.
- Is useful for Mac and Chromebook users who lack native versions of some PC games.
- Can extend the useful life of an older laptop.
- Can make high-resolution gaming possible without buying a local high-end GPU.
Disadvantages
- It is not a universal PC emulator; the game must be supported.
- You generally buy or subscribe to games separately.
- Compression and network conditions can reduce image quality.
- Latency matters, especially in competitive games.
- Wi-Fi congestion can cause stutter even on a fast broadband plan.
- Game support can change.
- Store, publisher, two-factor, and launcher logins add friction.
- Some anti-cheat systems, mods, peripherals, and local files may not work.
- TVs and iOS devices have stricter input limitations.
- A monthly membership does not necessarily mean unlimited sessions or uninterrupted access.
- Local hardware still matters for decoding video and driving high-refresh displays.
- Alliance Partner regions may have different plans, prices, and terms.
GeForce NOW compared with alternatives

Who should use GeForce NOW?
- Old-laptop owner: A strong fit if the games are supported and the connection is stable.
- Mac or Chromebook user: Useful for supported PC games that lack a convenient native version.
- TV gamer: Convenient if the TV is supported and you have a compatible controller. Keyboard-and-mouse games are a poor match on many TVs.
- Handheld owner: Attractive for accessing demanding games without installing them locally, provided the controls and Wi-Fi are good.
- Casual single-player player: Often a better fit than for a highly competitive player because small amounts of latency are less disruptive.
- Competitive player: Consider it only after testing the exact game and connection. Local hardware remains the safer choice for the lowest latency.
- Gaming-PC shopper: Compare several years of memberships and game purchases with the cost, maintenance, offline capability, and flexibility of a local PC.
Do not subscribe yet if your preferred games are unsupported, your connection has unstable latency or packet loss, you require extensive mods or unusual peripherals, you need offline play, or your iPhone/iPad or TV setup lacks a suitable controller.
Common problems and fixes
“The stream is blurry”
Likely causes include insufficient bandwidth, Wi-Fi interference, congestion, automatic quality adjustment, display mismatch, or regional/server conditions. Try Ethernet, 5GHz Wi-Fi, stopping other traffic, lowering resolution or frame rate, restarting the session, and testing latency and packet loss rather than download speed alone.

Distance to the data center, ping, jitter, Wi-Fi interference, Bluetooth delay, display processing, V-sync, and the game’s own settings can all contribute. Try Ethernet, a wired controller, display game mode, a lower stream setting, and a different time of day. Test a single-player game separately from a competitive title.
“Keyboard and mouse do not work”
Check the platform. TVs generally require a controller for gameplay; iPhone and iPad are not designed for normal keyboard-and-mouse gameplay; Android may need DeX or desktop mode; Safari has pointer-lock limitations; and desktop browsers may need permission for pointer lock.
“My save disappeared”
Confirm that you used the correct store or publisher account and that the game supports cloud saves. Check whether the game was removed from storage, whether the session used persistent storage, and whether a storage plan was canceled or changed. NVIDIA’s terms specifically warn about games without cloud saves and deletion after storage cancellation.
“The game requires a higher membership”
Some titles need more cloud memory, ray tracing, or other hardware capabilities. Check the game details page and NVIDIA’s explanation of Premium membership requirements.
Final verdict
GeForce NOW is an excellent solution when three conditions line up: you own supported PC games, your connection has low latency and stable bandwidth, and your local device is the bottleneck. Performance is the sensible paid starting point for most regular users; Ultimate is justified by a compatible high-refresh display, strong network, and a real need for RTX or higher-resolution streaming.
It is not a replacement for every gaming PC. Unsupported games, mods, offline play, unusual peripherals, launcher problems, save risks, and competitive latency still favor local hardware or a full cloud PC. Check NVIDIA’s catalog and run the service on your actual device and network before spending money on games or a long-term plan.
