The GeForce RTX 4060 is the better overall card and the sensible choice for a new build. It adds hardware ray tracing, DLSS, Frame Generation, AV1 encoding, newer driver features and much lower rated board power. An existing GTX 1080 can still deliver acceptable 1080p rasterized gaming, however, so upgrading is most compelling when you need those features, lower heat and power use, or better support for demanding modern games.

Which card is faster?

Native rasterization

In conventional rendering without ray tracing or upscaling, the RTX 4060 generally leads, but there is no responsible single percentage for every game. Results change with the engine, API, resolution, graphics preset, CPU, driver and whether the game is CPU-limited. A fair comparison should report average FPS and 1% lows from the same test system, using identical settings.

Tom’s Hardware’s RTX 4060 review uses a 15-game geometric mean with separate 1080p medium and ultra results, but its suite includes demanding ray-traced games and should not be treated as a universal GTX 1080-versus-4060 number. See the review methodology and its 1080p testing.

#1 Best Overall
Graphics Card GPU Brace Support, Video Card Sag Holder Bracket, GPU Stand (L, 74-120mm)
  • All-aluminum metal material - Provides strong and long-lasting support. This is made of all-aluminum metal instead of plastic, can avoid the aging of plastic materials and can be used as a long-term replacement.
  • Screw adjustment design - The graphics card bracket design can be compatible with various chassis configurations of traditional and long power supply bays to meet various user hosts.
  • Bottom hidden mag.net design - The mag.net hidden in the base is designed for easy installation and more stable standing in the chassis.
  • The workmanship of the detail process - The small graphics card support frame is made of three complex processes: polished anode, sandblasted anode and CNC high-speed edge-washing high-gloss process. The full anode process can maintain the durability.
  • Tool-free fixing module - The support module is equipped with a cushioning anti-scratch pad and a base high-gloss process.

For older DirectX 11 games and esports titles, a GTX 1080 can remain perfectly playable. In a CPU-limited 1080p system, replacing it may produce little average-FPS improvement even though the RTX 4060 is more efficient and supports newer features.

Ray tracing

The RTX 4060 wins decisively. NVIDIA identifies the GTX 10 series as having no dedicated ray-tracing cores, while the RTX 4060 has third-generation RT cores and DirectX 12 Ultimate support. The GTX 1080 should be considered a raster-first card; it is not a practical equivalent for modern ray-traced games. The 4060 may still require reduced settings or DLSS in demanding titles.

DLSS and Frame Generation

The RTX 4060 supports DLSS Super Resolution and Frame Generation. The GTX 1080 cannot use NVIDIA’s RTX DLSS features because it lacks Tensor and RT hardware. DLSS renders internally at a lower resolution and reconstructs the image; it does not add VRAM. Frame Generation creates additional displayed frames rather than fully rendered frames, so report native rendered FPS, upscaled FPS, generated/displayed FPS and latency separately. It can improve smoothness while adding latency or visible artifacts in some scenes.

Why the 4060’s 128-bit bus is not automatically slower

The GTX 1080 has a 256-bit interface and 320GB/s rated bandwidth, versus the RTX 4060’s 128-bit interface. Bus width and nominal bandwidth are not complete performance measurements. Ada’s much larger L2 cache is designed to reduce trips to external memory, so the 4060 can remain competitive despite the narrower bus.

The limitation is real in some workloads. High resolutions, ultra textures and ray tracing can increase memory traffic, and an 8GB card may suffer stutter or poor frame-time consistency when it runs out of usable VRAM. Cache efficiency cannot increase the physical 8GB capacity.

Is 8GB of VRAM enough?

Both cards have 8GB, which remains workable for many 1080p games at high settings. It is not a guarantee of trouble-free future performance. Newer games can exceed comfortable 8GB usage with ultra textures, ray tracing or higher resolutions.

  • At 1080p, start with high rather than ultra textures when a game shows stutter or texture pop-in.
  • At 1440p, monitor minimum FPS and frame-time consistency, not only the average.
  • With ray tracing enabled, reduce texture and RT settings before assuming the GPU is simply too slow.
  • DLSS can lower render workload, but it cannot increase VRAM capacity.

Tom’s Hardware specifically criticized the RTX 4060’s 8GB capacity and 128-bit interface in its review. Neither card is a no-compromise 1440p ultra or 4K choice; a newer model with more VRAM is preferable for that target.

Power, thermals and compatibility

NVIDIA rates the GTX 1080 at 180W TDP and the RTX 4060 at 115W TGP, with 110W average gaming power for the 4060. TDP and TGP are not identical laboratory measurements, so these figures are not an exact wall-power comparison. They nevertheless show why the 4060 is easier to cool and places less sustained load on a power supply.

  • The GTX 1080 Founders Edition uses one 8-pin connector.
  • RTX 4060 board designs vary; many use an 8-pin or 6-pin connector, while some include an adapter.
  • NVIDIA specifies a 550W minimum system power recommendation for its reference RTX 4060 configuration.
  • Partner cards differ in cooler, clock, dimensions and connector requirements; check the exact model.

The RTX 4060 uses a PCIe Gen 4 x8 interface. In a PCIe Gen 3 system it can lose performance in workloads that move data across the bus, especially when VRAM pressure is high. Do not assume every older platform will deliver identical results.

Streaming, recording and creator workloads

The RTX 4060 has eighth-generation NVENC, fifth-generation NVDEC and AV1 encode/decode support, making it the stronger choice for modern recording and streaming workflows. AV1 can improve quality at a given bitrate where the service and application support it. The GTX 1080 predates hardware AV1 encoding.

Drivers and game support

NVIDIA’s feature comparison lists current Game Ready and Studio support features for the RTX 40 series, not the GTX 10 series in the same way. Pascal cards may continue to run many existing games, but owners should not expect the same feature additions and optimization coverage as a current RTX generation. NVIDIA’s historical driver listings, such as this Pascal-era result, should not be interpreted as a promise of an exact future support date.

Who should upgrade?

Situation Recommendation
Already own a GTX 1080 and play older 1080p games Keep it unless a specific game is struggling.
Want ray tracing, DLSS or Frame Generation Choose the RTX 4060 or a newer RTX card.
Need lower power, heat or noise RTX 4060.
Need modern AV1 streaming or recording RTX 4060.
Play demanding new games at 1080p RTX 4060, while managing the 8GB limit.
Target 1440p ultra or 4K Look beyond both cards for more VRAM and performance.
Buying a very cheap used card A tested GTX 1080 can be good value if substantially cheaper.
Building a new system Between these two, buy the RTX 4060; also compare current higher-VRAM alternatives.

Used GTX 1080 buying risks

A used GTX 1080’s value depends on price and condition, not its original $599 positioning. Check for working fans, stable temperatures, memory errors, crashes, connector damage and a return period. Older cards may have worn fans, degraded thermal paste, coil whine or prior mining use, and they normally lack the warranty available with a new card.

Alternatives in 2026

The RTX 4060’s launch MSRP is historical, so compare its actual asking price with newer cards before buying. Potential families to investigate include NVIDIA’s RTX 5060 series, AMD’s Radeon RX 7600 and Intel’s Arc B580. Their performance, drivers, encoder support, VRAM and August 2026 prices are not established here, so verify current reviews and retailer pricing.

Verdict

Choose the RTX 4060 for a new purchase, ray tracing, DLSS, AV1, lower power consumption and newer feature support. Keep a healthy GTX 1080 when your games are conventional 1080p raster workloads and the card already meets your frame-rate target. Replace it when modern features, demanding titles, efficiency or reliability matter more than obtaining the cheapest possible used GPU.
