Genki did not reveal an official Nintendo Switch 2 at CES 2025. The accessory maker displayed 3D-printed mockups and related products, while reports attributed an April 2025 launch window to the company. Nintendo later said the hardware was unofficial and had not been provided by Nintendo. Genki also said its model was based on industry leaks rather than a console it had physically seen.
The mockup was nevertheless surprisingly accurate in several visible respects. The final Nintendo Switch 2 launched on June 5, 2025, with magnetic Joy-Con 2 controllers, a top-mounted USB-C port, mouse sensors, a 7.9-inch display, and a C button—features that had all appeared in reports about Genki’s CES model.
What Genki actually showed at CES 2025
At CES 2025 in Las Vegas, Genki displayed what appeared to be the successor to the Nintendo Switch. The presentation became widely reported on January 8, 2025, but the object on display was a physical mockup, not a playable retail console.
According to contemporaneous CES reporting from Numerama, Genki showed two mockups alongside a digital render or promotional video. The company also presented cases, grips, a dock, and other accessories designed for the unreleased system. Genki reportedly said it had prepared approximately eight accessories for launch.
The mockups were useful to an accessory company because they provided a physical reference for demonstrating fit, dimensions, connector locations, and controller attachment. Nothing in the CES display established that the model contained Nintendo electronics, ran software, or had been manufactured from official Nintendo tooling.
The details visible on the mockup
Reports from the show described a larger-looking Switch-style body with several design changes:
#1 Best Overall

- ALL-IN-ONE STORAGE: Dedicated compartments for safe, secure placement of console, cables, and accessories. Come with 12 game card slots, allowing to carry and change your favorite games anytime to anywhere

- MESH POCKET STORAGE: Zipped mesh pocket holds extra accessories, cables, and small items securely
- DURABLE DESIGN: Minimal black Switch case built with quality materials for long-lasting usability and dependable protection
- Joy-Con controllers that appeared to attach magnetically rather than sliding onto rails.
- A release button on the back of each controller.
- A second USB-C port on the top edge of the console.
- A new button marked C.
- An optical sensor that suggested the controllers could be used like a mouse.
- A screen of roughly eight inches and a body that appeared close to the original Switch’s thickness.
At the time, the purpose of the C button was unknown. The mouse-style function was also a prediction based on the visible sensor, not an official explanation from Nintendo.
What was the April release claim?
The reported April date was an accessory-maker claim about a launch window, not an official Nintendo announcement. Genki was reported as saying that its accessories would arrive alongside the console in April 2025. It was not a precise day, and Nintendo had not confirmed that month.
That distinction matters in hindsight. Nintendo’s first official Switch 2 announcement on January 16, 2025, confirmed the console’s name and said only that it would launch during 2025. Nintendo announced the actual date on April 2: June 5, 2025. The console did not launch in April.
Consequently, the accurate retrospective description is that Genki reportedly claimed an April launch window. It is not accurate to say that the Switch 2 was confirmed for April or that Genki revealed its official release date.

Was Genki’s mockup an actual Switch 2?
No official evidence supports calling the CES model an authentic Nintendo-supplied console. The story changed as more information emerged:
- Initial reports: Early coverage gave the impression that Genki had seen or used a real Switch 2 and had designed its accessories from that access.
- Nintendo’s response: Nintendo told media that the CES hardware was unofficial and had not been provided by Nintendo. Nintendo Everything’s report documented both Nintendo’s denial and the subsequent clarification attributed to Genki.
- Genki’s walkback: Genki reportedly told Japanese publication Game*Spark that the mockup was based on leaks circulating within the industry and that it had not seen the actual console. Notebookcheck summarized that clarification.
- Later court record: In a September 2025 stipulated judgment, Human Things—the company doing business as Genki—attested that it had not obtained access to Nintendo property, including an unreleased Switch 2, before Nintendo’s January 16 first-look trailer.
The strongest defensible conclusion is therefore that Genki displayed a real physical mockup whose design was assembled from leaks or other industry information. The public record does not establish that Genki possessed an official prerelease Switch 2, copied Nintendo’s official molds, or received a console from Nintendo.

What the mockup got right
The CES model looked credible because several major exterior features later appeared on the retail hardware. Nintendo’s official April 2 announcement confirmed the following:
| Feature reported from Genki’s mockup | What Nintendo ultimately confirmed |
|---|---|
| Approximately eight-inch display | A 7.9-inch 1920×1080 LCD with HDR10 and variable refresh rates up to 120Hz |
| Magnetic controller attachment | Joy-Con 2 controllers attach magnetically to the console |
| Rear release mechanism | Joy-Con 2 controllers use a rear release button |
| Mouse-like optical sensor | Both Joy-Con 2 controllers include mouse sensors and can function as a mouse in supported games |
| A new C button | The right Joy-Con 2’s C button launches GameChat |
| A second USB-C port on top | The Switch 2 has two USB-C ports, one on the bottom and one on top |
| Roughly similar thickness | Nintendo lists dimensions of approximately 166 × 272 × 13.9 mm with Joy-Con 2 attached |
These similarities are notable, but they do not authenticate the source of the mockup. A larger screen, magnetic controllers, a top USB-C port, and mouse functionality had also appeared in other leaks and accessory-related reports. A prediction can be accurate because the underlying information was widely circulating, because the maker inferred the design correctly, or because it had some other source. The feature match alone cannot distinguish between those possibilities.

What the final hardware launched with
For readers comparing the CES claims with the product that actually shipped, Nintendo listed these relevant launch specifications:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Release date: June 5, 2025.
- U.S. launch MSRP: $449.99.
- Japan launch MSRP: 49,980 yen for the Japanese-language system.
- Display: 7.9-inch LCD, 1920×1080 resolution, HDR10, and VRR support up to 120Hz.
- Dimensions: approximately 166 × 272 × 13.9 mm with Joy-Con 2 attached.
- Storage: 256GB of internal storage.
- Ports: two USB-C ports, including one on the top edge.
- Controllers: magnetic Joy-Con 2 attachment, rear release buttons, and mouse sensors.
- C button: used to launch GameChat from the right Joy-Con 2.
The $449.99 figure is the U.S. launch MSRP, not necessarily a permanent current price. Nintendo’s May 2026 financial materials said the U.S. MSRP was scheduled to increase from $449.99 to $499.99 on September 1, 2026. As of August 10, 2026, that increase was still in the future, so shoppers should distinguish the historical launch price from the price in effect when they buy.

Why Nintendo sued Genki’s parent company
The legal development added important context to the original CES story. On May 2, 2025, Nintendo of America filed suit against Human Things, Inc., doing business as Genki. Genki is the accessory brand; it is not Nintendo.
The lawsuit alleged trademark infringement, unfair competition, false advertising, and unauthorized or confusing use of Nintendo-related branding in connection with Genki’s accessories, mockups, and promotional material. It should not be simplified into a court finding that Genki stole a confidential console or obtained Nintendo’s files. The case did not proceed to a public trial deciding every disputed factual allegation.
Instead, the parties entered a stipulated judgment and permanent injunction on September 10, 2025. The judgment provided for damages under confidential terms and restricted Genki’s use of Nintendo marks and confusingly similar product names, including references involving NINTENDO, SWITCH, SWITCH 2, and JOY-CON. It preserved limited nominative use for accurate, verifiable compatibility claims accompanied by appropriate disclaimers.
Most relevant to the authenticity question, the final court document recorded Genki’s attestation that it had not obtained access to Nintendo property—including an unreleased Switch 2—before Nintendo’s January 16 first-look trailer. The stipulated judgment is stronger evidence than the initial CES wording, but it remains important to describe the result precisely: the case ended in a stipulated judgment and settlement, not a trial verdict that resolved every allegation.

How to describe the story accurately
The wording makes a significant difference:
| Too strong or inaccurate | Accurate alternative |
|---|---|
| Genki revealed the real Switch 2. | Genki displayed an unofficial Switch 2 mockup at CES. |
| Genki leaked an authentic Nintendo prototype. | Genki’s model was reported as being based on industry leaks; official prerelease access was not established. |
| The Switch 2 was confirmed for April. | Genki reportedly claimed an April 2025 launch window. |
| Genki got every detail exactly right. | Several prominent exterior features later matched the retail Switch 2. |
| Nintendo sued because Genki stole confidential hardware. | Nintendo sued over alleged trademark, competition, advertising, and branding violations connected to Genki’s products and marketing. |
| The lawsuit proved Genki lied. | The case ended with a stipulated judgment, confidential damages, and a permanent injunction; it was not a public trial ruling on every factual dispute. |
The verdict
Genki’s CES appearance was real, but the original framing was too definitive. The company showed a physical, unofficial mockup and associated accessories, and reports attributed an April launch prediction to it. Nintendo later denied providing the hardware, Genki said the model was based on leaks, and the later court record did not support the idea that Genki had accessed an official unreleased console before Nintendo’s January reveal.
At the same time, the mockup was not a random guess. Its magnetic controllers, top USB-C port, C button, mouse sensors, larger display, and general proportions were broadly reflected in the final Switch 2. The best conclusion is therefore a nuanced one: Genki accurately anticipated several features of Nintendo’s next console, but it did not officially reveal the Switch 2, and its April launch claim was wrong.
