HoYoverse announced an age-gate rollout for Genshin Impact and HoYoLAB accounts belonging to people residing in the United States, with rollout completion planned by May 20, 2025. That date has passed: the notice is not a new launch announcement or a future deadline. If your account shows an age-related prompt, follow the instructions displayed through the game or official HoYoverse account and support channels.
Who the announced age gate covered
HoYoverse’s announcement, dated January 17, 2025 and updated May 7, 2025, said it would roll out the age gate and certain parental-control functions to all players residing in the U.S. by May 20, 2025. The stated scope was U.S. residents using Genshin Impact or HoYoLAB; the notice does not establish a global rollout or prove that every account in every region receives the same prompt. Because the announced rollout date is in the past, do not treat it as an active deadline in 2026. For your account’s current status, check the game and official HoYoverse account or support channels directly.
What to do if a prompt appears
- Open Genshin Impact or an official HoYoverse account or support channel directly, then read the prompt shown for your account.
- Complete only the steps the official prompt requests. HoYoverse’s privacy materials say age information may be used to determine age and apply appropriate settings, but the reviewed materials do not establish one verification method for every account, region, or platform. Review HoYoverse’s privacy policy.
- If the prompt identifies the account holder as a younger player, follow the stated parent or guardian consent process. HoYoverse said younger U.S. players would need that consent to continue accessing Genshin Impact or HoYoLAB, with parent access management through its Parental Control Portal.
The cited notice does not say that every player must submit government ID, a selfie, or payment-card information. Do not assume a particular method unless the current official prompt for your account requests it. Never give your password or verification code to someone claiming they can complete the process for you.

If you have not received a prompt or missed the notice
No prompt is visible
The 2025 announcement gives a rollout scope and date, but it does not explain why a particular account may not display a prompt. Check through the game and official account or support channels rather than relying on social posts or user-generated reports to determine whether your account is affected.
You are concerned about suspension or deletion
In its announcement, HoYoverse urged affected players to verify promptly and warned that failure could risk account suspension and deletion of HoYoverse data. That was the company’s warning about the announced rollout; it is not evidence of a new deadline in 2026 or confirmation that a particular account has been suspended or deleted. If you cannot access your account, use official HoYoverse support for account-specific guidance. The announcement itself does not establish a recovery procedure.

Why the age gate was announced
The age-gate notice came alongside a Federal Trade Commission settlement involving Cognosphere, the company identified in the FTC release. The FTC said Cognosphere agreed to a $20 million penalty and described a settlement addressing allegations involving children’s privacy and virtual-currency practices. The release described proposed requirements including parental consent before children under 16 make in-game loot-box purchases and compliance with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). The FTC also said a federal judge had to approve the proposed order before it could take effect. Read the FTC’s settlement release.
The $20 million figure is the penalty identified in the FTC release—not a verification fee, an account count, or an age-gate statistic. The FTC’s claims and the requirements described in its proposed order should not be conflated with a finding about every player’s experience. FTC Bureau of Consumer Protection Director Samuel Levine said: “Genshin Impact deceived children, teens, and other players into spending hundreds of dollars on prizes they stood little chance of winning,” describing the FTC matter.
