Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before downloading anything, record:
- Which game or program fails
- The executable named in the error or Task Manager
- When the message appears, such as at launch, after an update, or after moving the game
- The complete error text, including whether it says “not found,” “could not be loaded,” or “not designed to run on Windows”
- The installation folder
- Whether the game is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Which launcher installed it, such as Steam, Epic Games Store, Ubisoft Connect, or another publisher launcher
- Whether antivirus recently quarantined a file
gfsdk_nvdof_lib.win32.dll is a 32-bit NVIDIA GameWorks/PostWorks rendering library used for depth-of-field effects. It is normally supplied inside the game or application that needs it, not by Windows.
The safest repair is to restore the original file through the affected game’s launcher. Do not download this DLL from a random DLL website or copy it into System32.
What gfsdk_nvdof_lib.win32.dll is
The win32 part identifies the 32-bit version of the library. It does not mean that your edition of Windows must be 32-bit. Windows 10 and Windows 11 on a 64-bit PC can run 32-bit games, and those games still require their 32-bit libraries.
The related 64-bit filename is gfsdk_nvdof_lib.win64.dll. These files are not interchangeable. Renaming the 64-bit file to gfsdk_nvdof_lib.win32.dll will not convert its architecture and can create a different loader error.

This is not normally:
- A Windows system DLL
- A Windows runtime component
- A standard NVIDIA display-driver file
- A Visual C++ redistributable
- A file that should be registered with
regsvr32
It is game-shipped middleware. The same library can appear in more than one game, so identifying the affected executable matters. It has been found among files for games including Dying Light, but that does not prove that every report belongs to that game.
Fix 1: Verify the game files
File verification is the quickest and most likely fix for this particular error. It restores missing or damaged files from the game’s official distribution service.
Steam
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click the affected game.
- Select Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the process to finish.
- Start the game from Steam.
Steam may reacquire gfsdk_nvdof_lib.win32.dll or another file that was removed with it. Test the game before making any other change.
If verification reports that files were reacquired but the same message returns, restart Windows and verify again. If the file disappears again, continue with the antivirus check below.
Epic Games Store
- Open the Epic Games Launcher.
- Select Library.
- Find the game and select the three-dot menu.
- Select Manage.
- Select Verify.
- Wait for the check to complete.
- Launch the game from Epic.
Ubisoft Connect
- Open Ubisoft Connect.
- Select Games.
- Select the affected title.
- Open the game’s properties or three-dot menu.
- Choose Verify files or Verify files under the local-files options.
- Allow Ubisoft Connect to repair the installation.
- Start the game again.
Another launcher
Look for a menu named Verify, Repair, Scan and repair, Check files, or Manage installation. Use the launcher that originally installed the game rather than a separate DLL utility.
If the launcher no longer recognizes the installation, do not copy the file from another computer. Reconnect the existing game folder through the launcher’s library-management option if available, then run verification. If that is not possible, reinstall the game from its official store or publisher.
Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can remove a game DLL or prevent the launcher from restoring it. This is especially likely if the error began after a game update, mod installation, or security scan.
Windows Security
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Look for an entry matching the game’s installation path or
gfsdk_nvdof_lib.win32.dll. - Read the detection details before taking action.
If the file was quarantined and the game came from a legitimate launcher, use the security product’s restore action only after confirming the path and detection. Then run the launcher’s file verification again.
Do not restore an unknown DLL copied from the internet. Do not disable antivirus protection merely to make the game start. If the file is removed immediately after verification, save the detection name and path and contact the game publisher or your security vendor. Repeatedly downloading replacements will not solve an automatic quarantine.

Also check whether a mod, injector, ReShade installation, unofficial patch, or manual file replacement changed the game directory. Remove unsupported modifications, then verify the original files.
Fix 3: Reinstall the affected game
Reinstall when verification cannot complete, the launcher reports unrecoverable files, or the game was moved between drives and its installation is incomplete.
Before uninstalling, back up saved games if they are not synchronized by the launcher. Then:
- Uninstall the game from its launcher.
- Restart Windows.
- Confirm that the old installation folder has been removed or is empty of leftover modified files.
- Install the game again through its official launcher or store.
- Run the game once without mods.
- Add modifications only after the unmodified game starts correctly.
A clean reinstall restores the exact architecture and companion files expected by that game’s build. It is safer than obtaining an isolated DLL.
Fix 4: Repair a missing dependency
A message naming gfsdk_nvdof_lib.win32.dll does not always mean that this file is absent. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that Windows found the named DLL but could not load one of its dependencies.
Read the complete message and inspect the game’s launcher logs if available. Look for a separately named runtime such as:
VCRUNTIME140.dllMSVCP140.dll- A DirectX component
- A PhysX component
- A launcher prerequisite
If the error explicitly names a Visual C++ runtime, install or repair the official Microsoft package. An x86 game needs the x86 Visual C++ runtime even when Windows itself is 64-bit. Microsoft provides the supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads.

Fix 5: Check Windows features only when the game requires one
Some older games require an optional Windows component, but enabling random features will not restore gfsdk_nvdof_lib.win32.dll.
If the game’s documentation or installer specifically identifies a Windows feature:
Recommended Free Tools
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
optionalfeatures. - Press Enter.
- Select the required feature.
- Select OK.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
For an older game, the relevant component may be listed under Legacy Components, but enable it only when the game or its official support instructions require it. Do not treat this as a substitute for file verification.
Fix 6: Repair broader Windows corruption
System File Checker repairs protected Windows files. It does not normally recreate a third-party GameWorks DLL inside a game directory. Use these commands when several unrelated applications fail or Windows itself shows signs of corruption.
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Verify the game files again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If either command reports errors it could not repair, repeat the process once after restarting. If only this game reports the DLL error, return to the game’s launcher rather than repeatedly running system repair.
If you prefer help identifying which Windows components require repair, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for problems that are tedious to trace manually; its free scan shows what it found, while repair is performed by the full version. Reinstalling the affected game remains the definitive fix when its own DLL is missing.

A graphics-driver problem can cause a game to fail after the DLL has loaded, but updating the driver does not replace gfsdk_nvdof_lib.win32.dll.
Use Device Manager when the error mentions a display adapter, the game crashes after its opening screen, or several games show graphics initialization failures.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics adapter.
- Select Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows.
For a clean driver repair:
- In Device Manager, right-click the display adapter.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If offered, select the option to remove the driver package.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current driver from the graphics-card manufacturer’s official support channel.
- Restart again.
If you are manually hunting through several driver packages, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its free scan shows the detected issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and it does not replace restoring the game through its official launcher.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why regsvr32 is not the fix
Do not run:
regsvr32 gfsdk_nvdof_lib.win32.dll
regsvr32 is intended for self-registering COM or ActiveX libraries that provide a DllRegisterServer entry point. This rendering library exposes game-facing functions instead. Registering it can produce an error saying that DllRegisterServer was not found, and it does not repair a missing game installation.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Likewise, do not place the file in:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- Another game’s folder
Game DLLs should normally remain beside the executable that loads them. Copying them into Windows directories can cause version conflicts and makes later troubleshooting harder.

If verification keeps failing
Use this sequence:
- Check antivirus quarantine and protection history.
- Remove mods, injectors, and unofficial patches.
- Confirm that the launcher is using the intended installation path.
- Check that the game drive has free space and no reported disk errors.
- Run the game’s prerequisite installers.
- Verify the files again.
- Reinstall the game if the launcher cannot restore the file.
If antivirus removes the DLL immediately, preserve the detection name, file path, and event details. Do not whitelist an unknown downloaded copy.
If the file exists but the error remains, capture the full message and record the affected executable, DLL path, Windows edition, launcher, antivirus product, and any launcher log entry. The problem may be a missing dependency, an incompatible game build, a loader-path issue, or disk corruption rather than the named DLL itself.
FAQ
Does this DLL belong to Windows?
No. gfsdk_nvdof_lib.win32.dll is normally bundled with a game or other application that uses NVIDIA GameWorks rendering middleware.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCan I use the win64 file instead?
No. A 32-bit program needs the 32-bit library. Do not rename the 64-bit variant.
Should I download the DLL separately?
No. Unaffiliated DLL downloads can contain malware, the wrong architecture, or a version that does not match the game. They also leave missing dependencies and corrupted installation files unresolved.
Will installing Visual C++ fix it?
Only if the error also identifies a missing or damaged Visual C++ runtime. Visual C++ does not install this GameWorks DLL.
Will updating the NVIDIA driver restore it?
Normally no. The file is game-shipped middleware, not normally part of the display-driver package. Verify or reinstall the affected game first.
