In Ghost of Yōtei, combat is built around choosing the right weapon for the enemy—not switching among the named stances from Ghost of Tsushima. PlayStation’s recommended matchups are straightforward: katana for sword users, dual katana for spear users, ōdachi for heavy enemies, yari for sickle wielders, and kusarigama for crowds and shields. Treat these as the publisher’s role guidance, not a ranking of damage.
Are there stances in Ghost of Yōtei?
The central melee choices are five distinct weapons, each with a stated purpose. PlayStation says knowing when to switch weapons matters to success in combat. The official guidance does not present Atsu’s arsenal as the named stance system from Ghost of Tsushima.
The available official combat material explains weapon roles but does not provide button-by-button switching instructions, exact combo routes, frame timings, or comparative damage values. For controls, check the current in-game controls menu.

Ōdachi: heavy opponents

Yari: sickle wielders
The yari’s long-range control helps interrupt attacks and is specifically recommended against sickle-wielding enemies.
Kusarigama: crowds and shields
Use the kusarigama’s wide reach to manage groups or break shields. It is the publisher’s stated crowd-control and shield-counter option.

How do weapons, skills, and Techniques unlock?
Atsu unlocks weapons by training under master warriors. Altars of Reflection, found across the land, let her upgrade skills and learn Techniques. If your current options feel limited, seek out training and altar activities to expand your combat choices; the official guide does not specify a mandatory unlock order.
How should you approach the Warrior build?
In Sony’s Warrior build guide, Eric Whelan recommends parrying incoming attacks and using heavy attacks to stagger enemies quickly. He also advises choosing the weapon aligned to the opponent because that build’s armor effects activate only when the selected weapon is aligned. This is guidance for that particular build, not a universal rule for every play style or difficulty.

What other combat tools can Atsu use?
The five melee weapons are only part of Atsu’s options. PlayStation also lists ranged weapons, quickfire tools, and other abilities:
- Bows: Short and longbows with specialized arrows.
- Matchlock: A Tanegashima firearm with two ammunition types.
- Quickfire tools: Kunai, smoke bombs, and blinding metsusubushi.
- Other abilities: Disarming enemies to use their weapons, mounted tackles, and calling on Atsu’s wolf companion.
The official combat page identifies these options but does not give their detailed input sequences, so use the in-game controls menu for exact execution.

Is Lethal Mode a good choice?
PlayStation describes Lethal Mode as a more realistic combat experience in which weapons are deadly and precise timing is crucial. Choose it if you want a more demanding experience; it is not a blanket recommendation for newcomers.
Does the controller affect combat?
On PS5, PlayStation says DualSense adaptive triggers are used for the bow, grappling hook, and battle actions, while haptic feedback supports katana combat. These features add controller feedback; the publisher does not present an upgraded controller as a requirement to play.
