Ghost of Yōtei is a standalone Ghost story, not a direct sequel to Ghost of Tsushima. It moves the action more than 300 years forward, from Tsushima to Ezo (present-day Hokkaido), and replaces Jin Sakai with Atsu. Both games share an open-world wandering-warrior foundation, but Yōtei brings a different revenge story, more flexible target selection, new weapons and PS5-focused features. You do not need to play Tsushima first.

Is Ghost of Yōtei a sequel to Ghost of Tsushima?
No. Yōtei is a standalone story with a new protagonist, setting and central conflict. Sony’s official FAQ says Jin Sakai does not appear in Yōtei’s main story. A later Sony announcement makes a specific exception outside that story: Jin is playable in the separate Most Wanted mode included with the Complete Edition.
The games are connected by their broad approach rather than a continuous plot. Sucker Punch’s Andrew Goldfarb described the shared pillars as playing a wandering warrior in Feudal Japan, exploring at your own pace and highlighting the world’s beauty. He also characterized Yōtei as a new protagonist, story and region. You can understand Atsu’s journey without knowing Jin’s.
How do the setting and protagonists differ?
Jin Sakai and Tsushima
Ghost of Tsushima follows Jin Sakai during the Mongol invasion of Tsushima. Its conflict centers on the island and Jin’s response to an invading force.

Atsu and Ezo
Ghost of Yōtei takes place in 1603 around Mount Yōtei in Ezo, the region now known as Hokkaido. Sucker Punch places Atsu’s journey more than 300 years after the events of Tsushima. Atsu is a mercenary seeking the Yōtei Six, the gang responsible for killing her family.
The revenge motive is the starting point, not the whole of Atsu’s arc. Sony describes the story as one of healing and redemption that runs deeper than vengeance.

What changes in exploration and combat?
Both games are open-world adventures built around exploring at your own pace. Yōtei’s developers describe a stronger emphasis on freedom in an untamed wilderness. In practical terms, players can choose which member of the Yōtei Six to pursue first, rather than following a single fixed target order. The game also includes bounties, weapon sensei and campfires.
Combat also changes: Yōtei introduces new weapons and Sucker Punch describes its weapon combat as more flexible. Those are developer-described design differences, not a claim that one game feels better or performs better in a direct hands-on comparison.

What does the PS5 version add?
Yōtei was built for PS5 and launched on October 2, 2025. The official PlayStation FAQ says it is not a PS4 release. Sony lists DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers, PS5 Pro support with PSSR, and advanced ray tracing among its platform features. These describe Yōtei’s PS5 presentation; they do not establish a measured performance advantage over Tsushima.
For current Yōtei content, Sony’s August 2026 Complete Edition announcement lists the main game, Ghost of Yōtei Legends, the Echoes of Sekigahara expansion, Most Wanted and Digital Deluxe content. The same announcement described a $69.99 U.S. price for Complete Edition and a $14.99 upgrade for existing owners. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which game should you play first?
Start with Tsushima if you want the series’ earlier setting and context before moving forward in time. Choose Yōtei first if Atsu’s story or the Ezo setting appeals to you: its main narrative does not require knowledge of Jin’s. Playing in release order is a natural way to notice the series’ shared design ideas and how the newer game changes them, but it is not a story prerequisite.
