Use Rock-type attacks against Gigantamax Butterfree first: its Bug/Flying typing makes Rock its strongest listed weakness. Dynamax Rhyperior, Gigalith, and Omastar with Rock-type Max attacks are strong modeled choices, but the ranking depends on simulator assumptions—not a guarantee for every team. Bring three Pokémon, including at least one Dynamax or Gigantamax Pokémon, and coordinate with other Trainers.
What is Gigantamax Butterfree weak to?
Gigantamax Butterfree is Bug/Flying. Pokémon GO Hub’s type chart lists Rock attacks at 256% effectiveness, while Electric, Fire, Flying, and Ice attacks are listed at 160%. Rock is the priority when you have an eligible Pokémon with a suitable Rock-type Max attack; the other four types are alternatives.
Niantic’s type guide explains that a Pokémon’s attack type matching its own type boosts that move’s power, and that dual typing can compound weaknesses. In practice, weigh the attack type alongside the Pokémon’s survivability and the Max Pokémon you actually have available.
Which Pokémon are the best modeled counters?
Pokémon GO Hub’s counter simulator models a six-star Gigantamax Butterfree battle with 90,000 HP. Its displayed top attackers are:

| 2 | Dynamax Gigalith | Smack Down / Max Rockfall |
| 3 | Dynamax Omastar | Rock Throw / Max Rockfall |
Other displayed options include Gigantamax Cinderace with Fire Spin and G-Max Fireball, and Dynamax Regirock with Rock Throw and Max Rockfall. Treat these as candidates, not a universal best-to-worst list: the simulator ranks damage during the Max phase, and the result depends on its assumptions and your battle conditions.
How to choose from your roster
- Prioritize access to a Rock-type Max attack, then consider the move and Max Move levels.
- Choose a Pokémon that can survive long enough to contribute, or assign it a defender role.
- Consider what your teammates are bringing; a team already stacked with Rock attackers may benefit from role coverage.
- Use your best-trained eligible Max Pokémon if you do not have one of the simulator’s top three.
How should you set up your team and battle?
Bring three Pokémon, including a Max Pokémon
Each Trainer selects three Pokémon and must bring at least one Max Pokémon. Only Dynamax or Gigantamax Pokémon can join a Max Battle, according to the Pokémon GO Help Center. A Gigantamax battle can include up to 20 Trainers. You can bring no more than three Max Pokémon; if all are knocked out, they do not recover before the battle ends. If you are out of usable Pokémon, cheering helps fill allies’ Max Meter.

Separate durability from Max-phase damage
Pokémon GO Hub’s simulation advice is to start with a tank or defender, then switch to an attacker when the Max phase begins. This is a strategic approach, not a guaranteed outcome. It can help preserve your damage-focused Pokémon for the phase when its Max attacks matter most.
Use Max Moves to stay in the fight
Max Guard reduces damage from the boss, while Max Spirit restores some HP to the user and allied Pokémon. You can train Max Moves using Max Particles and Candy; see Niantic’s Max Battles help page for the game’s rules and move details.

Can you beat a Gigantamax battle with three Pokémon?
One Trainer brings three Pokémon to a Max Battle, but a Gigantamax battle can include up to 20 Trainers. The cited sources do not establish that one Trainer’s three-Pokémon team can reliably defeat Gigantamax Butterfree alone. Plan to coordinate with other Trainers rather than treating your three slots as a solo team; Niantic described these battles as challenges that require enough Trainers to unite.

No—the announced debut event is historical. Niantic scheduled it for Sunday, August 3, 2025, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. local time, with six-star Max Battles, extra Max Particle collection, and timed research featuring Dynamax Darumaka. The event ticket was listed at US$4.99 and was only available until 5 p.m. local time that day. Those event bonuses, ticket, and research window have passed; this does not establish Butterfree’s current availability in the Max Battle rotation.
