GOG has begun work on a Linux version of its Galaxy client, co-founder and owner Michał Kiciński said in a February 2026 Reddit AMA. He described the project as being at a “very early stage” and said the company had begun recruiting a senior engineer. GOG has not announced a release date, supported distributions, or a feature list, so Linux users should not treat this as an imminent launch.
What GOG actually confirmed
In his February 2026 AMA, Kiciński said Linux was a serious topic for GOG, that recruitment for a senior engineer had begun, and that “the work has started.” He also said Linux support would appear on GOG “one day” and described himself as “a big fan of Linux.” Those statements mark a move from interest to early work, but they do not amount to a launch announcement. - Not announced: an ETA, beta date, supported distributions, packaging format, technical approach, or feature scope.
GOG’s developer documentation still says Galaxy is not supported on Linux. It documents Linux game builds separately, which users can access from their GOG libraries. GOG’s Linux build documentation is about distributing Linux games, not a Linux Galaxy client.

The announcement concerns the Galaxy application: the software used to organize a library and access platform services. A native Linux client would be built to run on Linux rather than requiring the Windows client to run through Wine or Proton. GOG has not said how it plans to build or package it.

That is separate from whether an individual game runs on Linux. A game may have a Linux build, work as a Windows game through Wine or Proton, or fail to run; a Linux Galaxy client would not automatically change those outcomes. Game launchers, anti-cheat, DRM, multiplayer services, and other components can also behave differently from the game itself.
Galaxy’s developer documentation describes SDK capabilities including achievements, leaderboards, multiplayer, friends, chat, crossplay, and storage. Those are examples of services the SDK can support, not a promised feature list for a future Linux client. See GOG’s developer quick start.

Why Linux users want a first-party client
Galaxy can provide a single place for library management, installs and updates, cloud saves, achievements, friends, and other integrations. A first-party Linux client could make those tasks more convenient, including on Linux-based handhelds. Whether it will include any particular feature—or work well on Steam Deck or another handheld—has not been disclosed.

The interest is visible on GOG’s own Galaxy wishlist: “Release the GOG Galaxy client for linux” was listed with more than 18,000 votes when indexed. Wishlist totals change, and strong demand does not establish that Linux is a primary GOG platform. The announcement is best understood as a response to persistent customer interest and the growing visibility of Linux gaming, not a promise about the size of GOG’s future Linux offering. What Linux GOG customers can use today
Download Linux-native games from your library
When a game has a Linux build, GOG makes that build available through the game’s library downloads. Check the downloads for the specific title; Linux availability varies by game. GOG’s documentation also explains that its developer tools can be distributed as Linux installers or AppImages, but those instructions apply to those tools—not automatically to every consumer game installer. Follow the instructions supplied with the game. GOG’s QA documentation describes its approach to Linux game releases.
Use offline installers where available
For DRM-free games with offline installers, you can download the files from GOG’s website without installing Galaxy. This can suit offline play and keeping a local copy. The trade-off is that updates are manual, and cloud saves, achievements, social features, or multiplayer services may be absent or depend on the specific game.

Consider community launchers for library management
Third-party projects offer ways to manage GOG games on Linux, but none is an official GOG Galaxy client or a substitute guaranteed to provide all its features. Compatibility and account integration can vary by game and may change.
- Heroic Games Launcher is an open-source launcher with GOG support and a Linux focus.
- Lutris can help manage games, including Windows games run through Wine.
- Minigalaxy is a lightweight community client for GOG games.
- lgogdownloader is a command-line tool for downloading GOG content, rather than a graphical launcher.
What remains unanswered
GOG has not said when a client might arrive or what systems it will support. The practical details Linux users will need—such as supported distributions, packaging, SteamOS or Steam Deck usability, controller and TV interfaces, and any ARM support—remain open. So do the scope of cloud saves, achievements, multiplayer, and other Galaxy services, and whether the client will manage Wine or Proton environments or leave that to other tools.

Those answers matter because a desktop client is not automatically a good handheld experience, and a working client does not guarantee that every game’s compatibility layer or online services will work. Until GOG publishes specifications or a test build, claims of a particular beta schedule, packaging format, distribution list, or compatibility implementation are unconfirmed.
