Linux gaming received two meaningful updates in 2026, but neither is a finished product. GOG confirmed on July 28 that a specialist is actively exploring Linux support for GOG GALAXY; there is still no release date, beta, feature list, or confirmed distribution method. Separately, Bazzite’s January 28 announcement said Universal Blue had joined the Open Gaming Collective (OGC), a collaboration aimed at sharing kernels, input tools, gamescope, hardware support, and other infrastructure.
These efforts address different layers: GOG is working on a first-party storefront client, while OGC is coordinating open-source platform work. They are related signs of a maturing ecosystem, not a joint project, a SteamOS replacement, or proof that Linux compatibility problems are solved.
What GOG has actually announced
GOG’s January 2026 job listing called Linux “the next major frontier” and sought a senior C++ engineer for GALAXY. On July 28, GOG confirmed that the specialist had joined and was determining the best approach to Linux support. That is active investigation and development, not a shipping announcement. GamingOnLinux reported the confirmation, while PC Gamer covered the project’s status.
As of August 18, 2026, GOG has published no Linux release schedule, public test build, feature list, or confirmed packaging method. GOG’s developer documentation still says GALAXY is not supported on Linux. Claims that the client is “coming soon,” already available, or has a Linux beta go beyond the evidence.

Three different kinds of Linux support

| Native Linux game build | A game compiled or packaged for Linux and downloaded from GOG. |
| Linux-compatible Windows game | A Windows release run through Proton, Wine, or another compatibility layer. |
| Native GOG GALAXY client | GOG’s own launcher and account-management software running on Linux. |
GOG already distributes native Linux versions of some games through its website and library. That does not mean GALAXY itself supports Linux. A future client could improve library management and updates, but it would not automatically turn Windows-only games into native Linux releases or guarantee that every title works through Proton.
What Linux users can do with GOG today
There is no need to wait for GALAXY to use a GOG library. The practical choices have different trade-offs:

What Bazzite’s “brighter future” means
On January 28, Universal Blue announced that Bazzite had joined the Open Gaming Collective. OGC is a working collaboration, not a distribution, storefront, or single corporate entity. Its associated projects include Bazzite/Universal Blue, ChimeraOS, Nobara, Fyra Labs, PikaOS, ShadowBlip, ASUS Linux, and others identified by the participating projects.

The stated goal is to reduce duplicated maintenance across Linux gaming. Instead of each distribution carrying separate fixes, projects can cooperate on kernels, handheld controls, input frameworks, gamescope, and hardware support. OGC describes an “upstream first” approach: improvements should be merged into the original upstream projects where practical rather than preserved as permanent OGC-only forks. That is a maintainability policy, not evidence that every planned change has already landed.
The HHD-to-InputPlumber transition
Bazzite said Handheld Daemon (HHD) would receive no further updates from the project and would be phased out in favor of InputPlumber. A shared input framework could reduce duplicated device work and align Bazzite with other Linux-gaming projects. The decision also reflected the status of HHD’s maintainer.
Bazzite’s follow-up presents this as an ecosystem-unification effort, not a claim that every HHD feature is already identical in InputPlumber. Device-specific gaps or regressions are possible during migration, and other launcher decisions were still being evaluated. The original announcement and follow-up are the appropriate references for changes.

What changes for current Bazzite users
Nothing in the OGC announcement requires an immediate reinstall or distribution switch. Bazzite remains a Fedora-based gaming operating system for desktops and handhelds, with support for major stores and launchers through its existing tools. Its atomic update model includes rollback and rebase options when an update causes trouble.

- Follow Bazzite’s documentation and release notes before manually replacing input, kernel, or handheld components.
- Do not assume an OGC component behaves identically on every distribution or device.
- Avoid mixing experimental components unless you are prepared to troubleshoot outside the normal support path.
OGC also does not make Bazzite an official SteamOS successor. Bazzite, ChimeraOS, Nobara, PikaOS, and other projects retain different bases, interfaces, hardware priorities, and release models while sharing selected infrastructure.
Why the two announcements matter together
Linux gaming needs both application support and a dependable platform layer. GOG’s work could eventually provide first-party authentication, downloads, updates, cloud-save integration, and a unified library. OGC’s work targets the lower layers that affect handheld controls, graphics presentation, kernels, and hardware behavior.

Neither side guarantees the other. There is no indication that OGC is developing GALAXY, that GALAXY will ship preinstalled on Bazzite, or that GOG’s client will directly manage every Windows game through Proton. A first-party launcher may initially have fewer capabilities than mature community tools, and an upstream-first infrastructure policy may take time to produce visible user-facing gains.

Should you change your setup now?
Already using Bazzite
Stay on your current installation unless you have a separate reason to change. Treat OGC as a longer-term maintenance direction and use Bazzite’s normal updates, documentation, and rollback tools.
GOG user on Linux
Continue with direct offline installers, Heroic, Lutris, or Minigalaxy according to your needs. Check each game’s Linux label and compatibility reports; purchasing a GOG title does not guarantee Linux support.

Choosing a handheld
Evaluate the specific device’s controls, graphics, Wi-Fi, RGB features, suspend/resume behavior, and game compatibility. A setup that works in a console-style gaming session may be less convenient in desktop mode.
Considering a switch from Windows
Test the games and peripherals you actually use. Multiplayer titles with kernel-level or unsupported anti-cheat remain a significant risk, and launcher requirements vary among GOG, Epic, EA, Ubisoft, Battle.net, and Xbox-related workflows. AMD graphics often have a strong Linux path, but laptop hybrid graphics and handheld-specific hardware still require device-level checks.
The Bottom Line
GOG is genuinely working toward Linux GALAXY support, but the project has no announced date or public build. Bazzite’s OGC membership is a serious attempt to share Linux-gaming infrastructure, not a new operating system or an immediate user migration. Keep using today’s GOG tools and Bazzite setup; watch the projects’ official updates for the changes that are still only being developed.
