“Golden Scarab” can mean different things. In ancient Egyptian history, a scarab is a beetle-shaped object used as an amulet, seal, or commemorative piece; it was not necessarily made of gold. The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s example associated with the phrase is made of steatite and bears imagery connected to the royal Golden Horus name of Thutmose I. The phrase also resembles the title of M. G. Leonard’s modern children’s novel Hunt for the Golden Scarab, a separate work.
What was an Egyptian scarab?
Egyptian scarabs were objects shaped like scarab beetles. Depending on their form and context, they could serve as personal amulets, impression seals, royal or administrative objects, or funerary items. Their use was not limited to burial.
Scarab imagery was associated with Khepri and the rising sun, and is commonly interpreted in connection with renewal or regeneration in ancient Egyptian belief. That is a broad religious association, not a single meaning that can be assigned to every scarab regardless of its inscription, date, or use. Not necessarily. “Golden” may refer to an inscription or royal title rather than an object’s material. The Met’s scarab inscribed with the name of Thutmose I is made of steatite, not gold. The museum dates it to Egypt’s New Kingdom, circa 1504–1491 BCE, and connects its base imagery to the king’s Golden Horus name.

The Met explains that royal titulary included “a Golden Horus name,” connecting the royal name with the Horus falcon depicted perched on the hieroglyph for gold. In this case, “golden” describes the titulary and imagery; it does not mean the scarab itself is gold. See the museum’s entry, “Scarab Inscribed with the Name of Thutmose I”.
What did different scarabs do?
Function and context matter more than the beetle shape alone. Scarabs could be used in life, in official settings, or in burial, and their inscriptions and materials varied.

These categories are not interchangeable. An inscription naming a ruler, an administrative sealing function, and a funerary placement point to different uses; one museum object should not be treated as representative of every scarab.
Is “Golden Scarab” a book?
A closely related modern title is Hunt for the Golden Scarab by M. G. Leonard, illustrated by Manuel Sumberac. Scholastic lists it as an Ancient Egypt and time-travel adventure for children, published January 2, 2025, with 288 pages and ISBN 9781035005963. It is part of Leonard’s Time Keys series, not an ancient artifact or an exact-title book called Golden Scarab. Scholastic’s listing is available at Hunt for the Golden Scarab.

What about the “golden scarab of Nefertiti”?
The phrase is associated in a secondary reference with a find from the Uluburun shipwreck, but the primary excavation or collection record for that identification is not established here. It should therefore be treated cautiously rather than used as proof that a particular scarab belonged to Nefertiti or was made of gold.
