Good gaming-PC specs depend on the games you play, the resolution and frame rate you want, and your budget. Start by choosing that target, then select a graphics card (GPU) for it, pair a compatible processor (CPU), and choose enough memory, storage, power and cooling for the complete system. No single component list is right for every player.

Choose a gaming target before choosing parts

A PC intended for 1080p high-refresh play has a different workload from one meant to run demanding games at native 4K. Before comparing systems, write down the games you care about, your display resolution, the frame rate and graphics settings you want, and whether you will use upscaling or frame generation. Those technologies can change how a performance target is achieved, so distinguish them from native rendering.

  • Resolution: 1080p, 1440p or 4K.
  • Performance: for example, 60 FPS or a higher refresh-rate target, with the graphics preset specified.
  • Workload: competitive esports, graphically demanding AAA games or particular titles.
  • Ownership: total price, warranty and support, noise, upgrade options and available space.

Then check the current official requirements for your actual games. Minimum and recommended labels are title-specific, and do not promise the same experience from game to game.

Which component matters most for gaming?

Graphics card: match it to resolution and settings

The GPU is a major gaming-performance choice, and it often deserves the first look when setting a gaming target. HP’s Gaming Desktop and Laptop Hardware Guide 2026 likewise places the GPU first in its component-priority advice. HP characterizes 1080p as achievable with a midrange card, 1440p as a balance of image quality and performance, and 4K as requiring a stronger GPU with ample VRAM. These are broad vendor guidelines, not independent benchmarks or promises of a particular frame rate.

Do not treat a GPU family name as an FPS guarantee. Results depend on the specific card, game, resolution, graphics settings, drivers and use of upscaling or frame generation. Compare independent tests only when they cover the same game and settings you care about.

Processor: avoid an unbalanced pairing

The CPU also affects gaming performance. Match its tier to the GPU and the intended workload rather than spending heavily on a high-end processor while pairing it with a GPU that cannot meet the target. Check the exact CPU model and generation: a broad family label alone does not establish gaming performance.

How much RAM and VRAM do you need?

System RAM and graphics-card VRAM are separate resources. A machine can have substantial system memory and still have a GPU with insufficient VRAM for a particular game setting, or the reverse. There is no universal amount that guarantees a given gaming experience.

HP’s 2026 guide suggests 16 GB of DDR5 RAM for its entry-level tier, 32 GB for mid-range, and 64 GB for high-end. Those are HP’s general tier recommendations, not minimum requirements for every game. The official requirements for Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, Borderlands 4, and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth show that memory needs and targets vary by title and tier.

For VRAM, use the requirements for the games and settings you intend to play, not a single blanket threshold. Borderlands 4’s support page, updated May 29, 2026, lists 8 GB minimum and 12+ GB recommended for its stated targets. Square Enix’s Final Fantasy VII Rebirth requirements recommend 12 GB VRAM or above for 4K. These are game-specific figures, not guarantees for other games or generations of GPU.

Use game requirements as practical examples, not universal specs

The official requirements below illustrate how much the target changes between games. Their labels describe those games’ own settings and goals; they should not be read as comparable benchmark results or as a parts list for every gaming PC.

Game and source context What its requirements say How to interpret it
Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 — Activision requirements Lists minimum, recommended, competitive and 4K tiers. The recommended tier targets 60 FPS in most situations on high settings. Memory, GPU, VRAM and OS requirements vary by tier; the page also notes SSD storage, TPM 2.0/Secure Boot and processor-support constraints. Use the tier matching your intended play and check the page’s platform and feature requirements; this is not a universal PC target.
Borderlands 4 — Gearbox requirements, published June 17, 2025 and updated May 29, 2026 Minimum is 1080p/30 FPS on low; recommended is 1440p/60 FPS on medium. It lists 16 GB RAM minimum and 32 GB recommended, 8 GB minimum VRAM and 12+ GB recommended, and SSD storage. These resolutions, frame rates, settings and memory figures belong to Borderlands 4’s stated tiers.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth — Square Enix requirements Lists 16 GB RAM and SSD storage. Minimum targets 1080p/30 on low; recommended targets 1080p/60 on medium. The page recommends 12 GB VRAM or above for 4K. Use its named settings and resolution rather than applying its 4K VRAM note to every game.
God of War Ragnarök — Santa Monica Studio requirements The 2024 table associates minimum with 1080p/30 low, recommended with 1080p/60 medium, high with 1440p/60, and performance/ultra tiers with 4K/60. Recommended and higher tiers list 16 GB RAM and a 190 GB SSD. The resolution targets are native, with no upscaling. Its native-resolution qualification makes these targets different from results that rely on upscaling.

Choose an SSD and enough capacity

An SSD is a practical baseline for a gaming PC, and some titles explicitly require one. Black Ops 7 and Borderlands 4 specify SSD storage; God of War Ragnarök lists a 190 GB SSD for recommended and higher tiers. These requirements are title-specific. The amount of capacity you need depends on the games you install and other files you keep on the PC.

HP’s 2026 guide suggests a 1 TB NVMe SSD for its entry and mid-range tiers and 2 TB for its high-end tier. This is vendor guidance, not a capacity rule. Its earlier 4K gaming guide recommends 32 GB RAM and at least a 1 TB NVMe SSD for a 4K system; its example GPUs are from older product generations, so do not use them as current best-buy recommendations.

Check the whole system before buying

A gaming desktop is more than its headline CPU and GPU. Confirm that the parts work together and fit the games and usage you have in mind.

  • Motherboard and memory: verify CPU support and the correct RAM type for the motherboard.
  • Power supply: check capacity against the GPU and CPU requirements, plus the required connectors. HP recommends matching the PSU to GPU power needs and provides approximate wattage tiers in its guide; those estimates are not a substitute for checking the exact parts.
  • Case and cooling: confirm GPU clearance, airflow and cooling suitability, and consider noise.
  • Storage: confirm the drive type and capacity against the titles you plan to install.
  • Upgradeability and support: check what can be replaced or upgraded, along with warranty and support terms.
  • Comparable performance evidence: look for independent tests of the same games, resolution, settings and rendering approach rather than inferring FPS from component names.

For laptops, do not assume a GPU with a similar name performs like its desktop counterpart. Laptop performance and upgrade options differ; assess the exact laptop configuration.

A practical way to compare gaming PCs

  1. List your games and display target. Record resolution, desired FPS and graphics preset for each priority game.
  2. Read the games’ official requirements. Check the relevant tier, operating-system and hardware constraints, and any SSD or security-feature requirements.
  3. Choose a GPU suited to the target. Use comparable independent benchmarks where available; do not rely on a product-family name as an FPS result.
  4. Check CPU and memory balance. Confirm the exact CPU model and generation, system RAM capacity and type, and GPU VRAM against your games.
  5. Verify the complete configuration. Review SSD capacity, PSU connectors and headroom, motherboard support, case fit, cooling, warranty and upgrade options.
  6. Compare the total price and evidence. Prices and availability change; assess the exact configurations being offered and tests that match your use case.

Requirements, prices, drivers and hardware generations change over time. Recheck official game pages and exact system specifications when making a purchase; no configuration can be called future-proof on the evidence here.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
