The date in the old headline is stale: Google and Valve announced that the official Steam for Chromebook Beta would end on January 1, 2026. That date has passed. The change affects ChromeOS’s integrated Steam beta—not Steam accounts, all Steam games, or every way to play games using a Chromebook.
What ended: Steam for Chromebook Beta
Steam for Chromebook was an official ChromeOS beta built around Borealis, a dedicated virtual machine for running Steam and its dependencies. It was not simply the standard Linux desktop Steam client installed in ChromeOS’s Linux development environment. Google described the project as bringing Steam to ChromeOS (Google’s overview of the project; Borealis source project).
The integrated approach was intended to make local PC gaming more manageable on selected Chromebooks, including ChromeOS-specific work for graphics, input, fullscreen and window handling. It remained a beta, however: Google warned of limitations, bugs, performance issues and game-compatibility restrictions in its Steam for Chromebook support documentation.

- 2022: Google publicly outlined its work to bring Steam to ChromeOS.
- August 7, 2025: reporting described a ChromeOS warning that the beta would conclude on January 1, 2026 (9to5Google).
- January 1, 2026: the announced end date for the Steam for Chromebook Beta (Ars Technica’s report).
- August 2026: January 1 is in the past. This is a post-shutdown story, not a warning that the change is coming “next year.”
The announcement establishes the end of the beta, not that every existing installation or game stopped working at midnight on January 1. Actual behavior can vary by Chromebook model, ChromeOS version, Steam client and game. An installer still appearing in the Launcher, or a previously installed copy still starting, would not establish that the beta remains supported or will keep working after future updates.

What the shutdown does—and does not—mean
- It does mean: the official, integrated Steam-for-Chromebook beta reached its announced end point. Users should not expect Google or Valve to continue beta fixes, compatibility work or support for Borealis.
- It does not mean: ChromeOS has ended, Steam has shut down generally, or a Steam account and its purchases have been erased.
- It does not guarantee: that any particular existing Borealis installation will continue to install, update, launch Steam or run games. The original shutdown notice did not establish a universal cutoff for every one of those behaviors.
Steam purchases are associated with a user’s Steam account, not with Borealis. You can still access that account on supported hardware such as a Windows or Linux PC or Steam Deck. Whether a particular game remains playable locally on a Chromebook is a separate question. Save availability likewise depends on the game and whether it uses Steam Cloud or another syncing method; local save files may need to be moved or backed up separately.
Which Chromebooks were eligible?
While the beta was available, Google’s published requirements included an Intel Core i3 or AMD Ryzen 3 processor or better, at least 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage, as well as a device on Google’s supported Chromebook list (Google’s requirements and device information). Earlier experimental documentation focused on a narrower set of Intel Iris Xe configurations, including some 11th-generation Core i5 and i7 devices, and warned about issues on lower-memory systems and displays above 1080p (ChromeOS experimental documentation).
Those historical requirements do not guarantee that Borealis will work now. Support was model- and configuration-specific; meeting a CPU and RAM threshold did not make every Chromebook eligible. ARM-based Chromebooks were not equivalent to the supported Intel and AMD models. Most importantly, none of the old requirements promises ongoing operation after the beta ended.

Ways to play Steam games with a Chromebook now
1. Check cloud gaming title by title
GeForce NOW is the most direct cloud option for some people who already own PC games. It runs through a supported browser on Chromebook and can connect supported titles from stores including Steam. But ownership and streaming availability are different things: NVIDIA must support the specific game, and not every Steam title is available. Check the GeForce NOW catalog and service details before relying on it.
NVIDIA’s network guidance calls for less than 80 ms latency to a data center and recommends at least 15 Mbps for 720p/60, 25 Mbps for 1080p/60 and 35 Mbps for higher-resolution streaming. A stable connection matters as much as headline download speed; try Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi where practical. See NVIDIA’s system requirements. Queues, session or resolution limits and other restrictions depend on the current membership tier.
Xbox Cloud Gaming is a different proposition: a browser-accessible catalog, not a way to stream your Steam library. Select free-to-play games can be available with a free Microsoft account in supported regions; broader access depends on a compatible Game Pass plan. Boosteroid is another browser-based cloud option promoted for ChromeOS. Check whether the specific game is supported and whether the service has suitable server coverage near you at Boosteroid. As with any cloud service, distance to servers and network conditions affect responsiveness.

None of these services restores unrestricted, officially supported local Steam gaming on ChromeOS.
2. Stream from a gaming PC you already own
Remote play lets a gaming PC handle the game while the Chromebook receives a video stream and sends back controls. It can be a good fit if you already have a capable PC and a strong network, but the PC must be available, and streaming introduces latency and possible controller or input issues. This is remote access to another computer—not local Steam support on the Chromebook.

3. Try Linux Steam only if you accept an unsupported experiment
ChromeOS’s Linux development environment can run Linux applications, but installing ordinary Linux Steam there is a separate setup from Borealis. Graphics drivers, VM or container limits, controllers, game compatibility, storage and performance can all differ. It is not a universal, officially maintained replacement for the beta. Avoid treating community scripts, experimental flags or developer-channel changes as supported fixes—especially on a school- or work-managed Chromebook.
4. Choose different hardware for local or offline gaming
If your priority is installing and playing a broad range of Steam games locally, consider a Windows gaming laptop, a compatible Linux PC, a desktop or a Steam Deck. Those options have different prices, maintenance and hardware trade-offs, but they are a more dependable direction for local PC gaming than buying a Chromebook on the assumption that the former beta will continue.

Should you buy a gaming Chromebook?
A gaming-branded Chromebook can still make sense as a ChromeOS computer or as a cloud-gaming screen, but the label should not be read as a promise of local Steam support. Google has promoted cloud services such as GeForce NOW and Xbox Cloud Gaming for gaming-oriented Chromebooks (Google’s Chromebook gaming overview). That shows a visible cloud-gaming direction; it does not establish a stated corporate motive for ending Borealis.

Before buying, decide whether you need local rendering, offline access or compatibility with a particular Steam library. If so, choose hardware designed for that use. Also check the specific Chromebook’s update-support period separately: ChromeOS device updates and the Steam beta are distinct matters (Google’s ChromeOS update policy information).
Bottom line
Google and Valve announced that the official Steam for Chromebook Beta would end on January 1, 2026, and that date has passed. The change ended the supported Borealis path for local Steam gaming; it did not delete users’ Steam purchases or rule out cloud gaming, remote play or unsupported Linux experiments. For a new device intended for unrestricted local Steam play, choose a PC or handheld rather than counting on ChromeOS.
