Neither Google Cloud Compute Engine nor an Indian VPS is automatically the better host for YouTube Live. Choose based on a sustained upload test to your intended YouTube ingest endpoint, the machine and location you need, provider terms, and the full bill. Compute Engine documents India-region availability and says VM data transfer to YouTube is not charged; that does not make the VM or its other resources free. The available evidence does not establish a current, named Indian VPS provider as a universal winner.
Start with the bitrate your stream needs
Your host must sustain the stream’s outbound bitrate with room to spare. YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps using AV1 or H.265, and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps using H.264. These are recommendations for those codec and resolution combinations, not guarantees of what a particular VM can deliver.
YouTube recommends about 20% upload headroom, advises testing outbound bandwidth, and notes that primary and backup streams may both count toward the bandwidth needed. Download speed alone does not show whether a host can sustain the required upload. YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate encoding, and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds. See YouTube’s encoder settings and streaming tips.
- For a fair comparison, use the same resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, stream duration, and YouTube destination on each host.
- Record outbound performance and dropped frames during a sustained test, not just a short speed test or the provider’s advertised maximum.
- Leave the recommended headroom above the stream bitrate. If using a backup stream, account for its bitrate too.
Compute Engine and an Indian VPS compared
| Decision point | Google Cloud Compute Engine | Indian VPS hosting |
|---|---|---|
| Location | Google documents accelerator availability in Mumbai and Delhi zones; availability varies by zone and machine. This GPU page is not a complete inventory of general-purpose VMs. Verify the specific machine and zone before planning around them. Google Cloud GPU locations | Check the provider’s stated VM location and route to the YouTube ingest endpoint. A suitable location and route are not established for any named provider here. |
| Sustained upload | Google documents per-instance bandwidth limits and qualifies achievable bandwidth; a maximum is not a sustained-throughput guarantee. Test the selected VM and zone under the intended workload. Google Cloud network bandwidth | Require an actual sustained test or clear network terms. Advertised peak egress alone does not establish stream performance. |
| YouTube-bound transfer | Google’s network-pricing page says VM data transfer to YouTube is not charged. The VM and other configured resources still incur charges. Google Cloud network pricing | Verify included traffic, egress charges, monthly quotas, shaping, and any acceptable-use rules directly with the provider. These terms are not established for a named provider here. |
| Compute fit | Choose based on whether the server encodes video or only relays an already encoded stream, as well as the stream’s settings. No particular machine size is established as suitable for every workload. | Apply the same distinction: a relay and a software encoder have different compute needs. Confirm specifications against your actual workload. |
| Full cost | Estimate the VM, disk, public IP and other configured resources for the schedule you plan to run. YouTube-bound VM transfer being uncharged does not make Compute Engine free. Use current configuration- and location-specific pricing. Google Cloud general-purpose VM pricing | Calculate the VM charge plus any traffic, storage, IP, support, or add-on charges that apply under the provider’s current terms. No current provider price is established here. |
How to choose without assuming a winner
- Pin down the workload. Write down resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, whether the server encodes or relays, stream duration, and whether a backup stream will run.
- Shortlist actual machines and locations. For Compute Engine, verify the selected machine type in the intended zone. For a VPS, verify the advertised location and what network capacity and traffic terms apply to that specific plan.
- Check the provider’s rules. Confirm that sustained video streaming is allowed, and check traffic allowances, shaping, support, restart behavior, monitoring, backups, and failover arrangements.
- Run the same sustained test on each candidate. Send a test to the intended YouTube ingest endpoint using the same encoder settings and duration. Record dropped frames and outbound performance; do not treat a provider’s maximum egress as proof of stable throughput.
- Compare the whole operating cost. Add the resources and traffic charges that apply over your stream schedule. Compute Engine’s stated no-charge rule for VM transfer to YouTube is one line item, not a substitute for estimating the rest of the bill.
Compute Engine may suit a workload that benefits from its documented India locations and YouTube transfer pricing, provided the selected machine and tested network meet requirements. An Indian VPS may suit a workload whose provider can demonstrate an appropriate location, sustained upload, acceptable traffic terms, and competitive total cost. Without provider-specific evidence and a matched test, neither option can be declared universally cheaper or more reliable.

YouTube eligibility and launch checks
YouTube says a channel must be verified, must not have live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and the user must be at least 16 to start live streaming. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
For production, YouTube advises setting up ahead of time, checking the Live Control Room preview, and testing backup-encoder failover if you use one. Review YouTube’s computer live-streaming tips.
