Visit a place when current conditions, scale, movement, sound or the way people use it will materially affect the game world. Neither method has been shown to produce more realistic worlds on its own: they answer different questions, and online imagery is a dated, incomplete view rather than a live record.
What each method can tell you
Google Maps and Street View: orientation and visible arrangement
Remote research is useful for understanding how streets, buildings and landmarks relate, comparing visible layouts, and finding candidate locations or routes. Treat what you see as a prompt for original design work and a list of questions—not proof that a detail is current or complete. Google itself cautions that actual conditions can differ from map results and advises users to exercise independent judgment in its Maps Additional Terms of Service.
A site visit: firsthand observation
Being at a place can help you judge scale, sightlines, slopes, pedestrian movement, sound, weather, materials and patterns of use that a map view cannot convey. This is a practical reason to visit when those qualities matter to a scene, not a claim that field visits have been proven to improve game realism. Go only where access is permitted, follow local rules, and make independent notes or sketches.
Choose the method based on the design question
| Research need | Start with | Add an on-the-ground check when |
|---|---|---|
| Find a candidate neighborhood, route or arrangement | Maps or Street View for orientation | Access or the present-day layout changes the scene |
| Block out a recognizable spatial relationship | Remote map research and original notes | Relative scale, sightlines, slopes or pedestrian movement matter to play |
| Capture atmosphere and human detail | Use remote imagery to form questions | Sound, weather, daily rhythms, materials or social use are central |
| Depict a current place accurately | Check current, independent sources | The feature is time-sensitive or the imagery’s capture date is old |
| Reproduce Google content in a shipped game | Check the terms for the exact product and use | The plan involves copying, screenshots, tracing, extraction or redistribution |
This is a practical framework, not a guarantee that a particular use of Maps is permitted or that a visit is safe or lawful.

- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A practical research workflow
- Orient remotely. Use Maps to understand the broad layout and identify a short list of features worth checking.
- Turn observations into questions. Note uncertainties—such as whether a route is open or how steep a slope feels—instead of assuming every visible detail is current.
- Verify what affects the scene. Consult current independent sources, and visit accessible locations when firsthand observation would materially change the design.
- Record your own observations. Make original notes and sketches. A pocket field notebook is one optional way to do this, not essential equipment.
- Create an original environment. Use research to inform a fictionalized design. Before embedding or reproducing Google content, check the applicable current rules for that specific content and use.
Street View is not a live view
Street View depicts what cameras saw when they passed. Google says processing takes at least a few months, and imagery may be anywhere from a few months to a few years old. Construction, access, traffic, signs and other changing details may therefore differ from what appears online. For freshness, check the relevant view’s capture date where shown and verify consequential details against current sources or firsthand observation. Google’s Street View privacy information also describes automatic blurring of faces and license plates and a process for requesting additional blurring of a person, car or home; that privacy protection does not make imagery current or guarantee every detail is up to date.
Viewing Google content does not automatically grant reuse rights
Using Maps or Street View as a reference is different from putting Google’s content into a game. Google’s Maps terms restrict redistribution or sale of Maps content, copying except where permitted, mass downloading and certain uses that create substitute mapping datasets. The Maps Platform terms give examples of restricted derivations, including tracing or digitizing roads and building outlines from specified map imagery. Google’s Geo Guidelines say Street View imagery must not be screenshotted or removed from its embedded context, and list tracing or analyzing imagery to create data among disallowed uses. The Maps Platform FAQ says map tiles and satellite imagery cannot be accessed through mechanisms outside Google Maps Platform.

Attribution is required for Maps, Earth and Street View content, and the required attribution can vary with geography and content type. It does not, by itself, permit extraction or reuse. Read the current agreement for the relevant product, billing geography and implementation; the cited pages do not settle every possible permission, fair-use or jurisdiction-specific question. For consequential commercial use, seek qualified legal advice.
Google’s own terms sum up an important limitation: “When you use Google Maps map data, traffic, directions, and other content, you may find that actual conditions differ from the map results, so exercise your independent judgment and use Google Maps at your own risk.”

Can you build a game world entirely from position-mapped real-world photos?
Position-mapped photos can help you understand visible features and spatial relationships, but that does not establish that a complete world can be built accurately from them—or that the images can be extracted and reused. Photos capture particular views at particular times; they do not, by themselves, establish current access, movement, sound, scale or how a place is lived in. If you are using Google imagery, its terms and guidelines also limit copying, tracing, extraction and redistribution. Use remote images as reference where appropriate, verify important details, and create original assets unless you have confirmed the rights for the specific material and use.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the evidence does—and does not—establish
There is no comparative statistic in the cited official material showing that Maps research or site visits produce more realistic game worlds. The choice here is a workflow judgment based on what remote imagery can show, what it can miss and the limits Google states for its content. A 2018 TIME report described a then-new Google Maps integration for location-based mobile games and the design value of recognizing real-world features such as parks. That is historical context, not evidence that the same product, terms or availability remain current in 2026.
