The headline is historical, not current news. Google reportedly prepared a 2023 test of its Borealis Steam-on-ChromeOS environment on inexpensive Intel N100 and N200 Chromebooks. The evidence never established a broad, stable rollout, and reports said the Steam-for-Chromebook beta ended on January 1, 2026. An N100/N200 Chromebook should therefore not be bought as a local Steam gaming machine.
What Google was testing
Borealis was Google’s codename for an integrated Steam environment on ChromeOS. It was not an Android app and not simply Steam installed in Crostini, ChromeOS’s general-purpose Linux container. Borealis used a virtual machine to run Steam, Linux-native games and selected Windows games through Proton.
That distinction matters because virtual-machine graphics support, Proton translation, drivers, memory and thermal limits all affect whether a game is merely installable or actually playable. Google’s technical documentation describes Borealis here: Borealis project README.
Why N100 and N200 support would have been significant
Intel’s N100 and N200 are low-power Alder Lake-N processors used extensively in inexpensive Chromebooks, including education and entry-level models. Supporting them would have lowered Steam’s potential hardware floor from premium Chromebook configurations to much cheaper systems.

Google’s October 2023 Chromebook guidance placed N100/N200 devices in lower-end 4GB categories, while its advanced-use guidance paired heavier workloads with 8GB systems and Core i3, i5 or i7 and Ryzen 3, 5 or 7 processors. That contrast shows why a processor name alone is not enough: RAM, integrated graphics, cooling, storage and the specific Chromebook board all matter. See the Google Chromebook hardware guide.
N100 and N200 should not be treated as interchangeable with Core i3 chips. They target efficiency and low cost, and their integrated graphics are designed for everyday ChromeOS work rather than demanding PC games.
Was N100/N200 Steam support ever officially released?
No broad, stable public release is established by the available evidence. A 2023 report said Google was preparing or testing Borealis on Alder Lake-N systems, but that described an engineering effort—not a promise that every N100/N200 Chromebook would be supported.
It is useful to separate five different stages:
- Internal Chromium or Borealis testing.
- A device-specific flag or engineering build.
- A limited beta allowlist.
- Official public support.
- Reliable performance across a useful game library.
The original report reached the first stages, not proof of the last three. Even at the time, a test cited unusable Counter-Strike: Global Offensive performance on a substantially faster Chromebook with Intel Iris Xe graphics. Read the contemporaneous report at Chrome Unboxed.

What the official beta required
Google’s public Steam-for-Chromebook documentation specified these minimums for selected supported models:

The official help page also warned about performance problems and limited compatibility. If “Steam installer” did not appear in the Launcher, Google said the Chromebook did not meet the requirements or was not eligible. The historical installation path was Launcher → search for Steam installer → select the app, rather than installing Steam or Steam Link from the Play Store. What games were considered compatible
Google’s tested list focused mainly on older, lightweight or moderately demanding games, including:

- Half-Life 2, Sea of Stars and PowerWash Simulator
This was a test list, not a guarantee for every supported Chromebook. “Steam support” never meant the entire Steam catalog would run. Compatibility also depends on whether a game launches, renders correctly, maintains a stable frame rate, supports its controller and online services, and avoids anti-cheat problems.

Why N100/N200 gaming would have been limited
Memory and storage
Many low-cost N100/N200 Chromebooks have 4GB of RAM, below the beta’s 8GB requirement. A 64GB or 128GB eMMC drive can also leave little room after ChromeOS, the virtual machine and game files are installed.
Graphics and cooling
The integrated graphics are aimed at efficiency. Fanless designs may throttle during sustained play, and higher-resolution displays make the GPU work harder. Google’s documentation warned about scaling and performance above 1080p.
Virtual-machine and Proton overhead
Borealis adds a VM layer, while Windows games may require Proton translation. A game can open and still be too slow for regular play. Steam Deck results are not a reliable comparison: Valve’s handheld combines gaming-focused drivers, profiles, cooling and an operating-system integration that an N100 Chromebook does not share.
Practical settings
Google recommended lowering resolution, starting with medium or low graphics presets and closing other applications. Background Vulkan shader processing could reduce stutter but increase battery consumption. Battery life also falls sharply during local gaming.

The beta’s reported end
Ars Technica, Tom’s Hardware and Android Authority reported that Google and Valve planned to end the Steam-for-Chromebook beta on January 1, 2026, with an in-product warning that installed beta games would no longer be playable afterward. Google’s help page still labels Steam as a beta, so the public documentation appears not to have been fully retired or updated.
Coverage discussed low usage, limited compatibility, insufficient gaming hardware and the maintenance burden of a Steam VM as possible explanations. Neither Google nor Valve provided a detailed postmortem in the cited reports. See Ars Technica, Tom’s Hardware and Android Authority.

Cloud gaming
Services such as GeForce NOW run games on remote servers and stream the video to a Chromebook. Xbox Cloud Gaming offers a subscription catalog where supported. Both require reliable broadband, add network latency and vary by catalog, region and plan.

Steam Remote Play
If you already own a capable Windows, Linux or SteamOS PC, Steam Remote Play turns the Chromebook into a client. The host computer must be powered on and reachable; the Chromebook is not running the game locally.

Linux Steam through Crostini
Technically experienced users can experiment with the Linux desktop version of Steam in Crostini or alternative Linux setups. This is not Borealis, is not a supported replacement for the discontinued beta and can encounter graphics-driver, controller, storage and anti-cheat problems.
Android games
Android titles optimized for ChromeOS remain a practical choice for casual and mobile-native gaming, but they do not provide the full PC Steam library.
Buying advice
- Already own an N100/N200 Chromebook: Use cloud gaming or remote play for demanding games; reserve local play for lightweight, older, 2D or turn-based titles.
- Shopping for ChromeOS: Choose at least 8GB RAM and a stronger Core i3/i5 or Ryzen processor for better general and cloud-gaming headroom, but do not assume a Chromebook Plus badge means local Steam support.
- Want local Steam gaming: Buy a Steam Deck or Windows gaming laptop instead. A Chromebook with N100/N200 is not a substitute.
Before investing in any Chromebook, check its update lifespan at Settings → About ChromeOS → Additional details, using Google’s Auto Update Expiration guidance.

Can an N100 Chromebook run Steam today?
The official integrated Steam beta was reported discontinued on January 1, 2026. Any remaining installer, flag or Borealis files do not prove current support. Unofficial Crostini or Linux installations may work for some lightweight games but are not guaranteed.
Does Proton make every Steam game compatible with ChromeOS?
No. Proton can help selected Windows games launch, but graphics correctness, frame rate, anti-cheat, controllers and online multiplayer still vary by title and hardware.
