Yes—Google Play now offers Game Trials for selected paid Android games. On an eligible listing, tap Try to install and play the full game for up to 60 minutes without paying first. The clock starts when you launch the game and keeps running if you close it. When time expires, a full-screen purchase prompt blocks further play; buying the game should preserve your progress.
How Google Play Game Trials work
- Open the Google Play Store on a supported Android device.
- Find a paid game with a Try button or a Game Trials module.
- Read the pre-launch screen showing the trial duration and purchase terms.
- Start the trial and play normally.
- Purchase the full game from the in-game prompt if you want to continue.
Google Play manages the timer, paywall and purchase flow through the game’s Android App Bundle. No payment is required to start. Google describes the trial as access to the game’s full functionality, rather than a developer-made demo. Details are documented in Google Play Console Help and the Google Play Games developer program.
The 60-minute timer has an important catch
The documented limit is up to 60 minutes of elapsed gameplay time. It begins when you first launch the game—not when the download starts—and it does not pause when the app is closed. Avoid opening a trial casually if you cannot play immediately. Google may show a notification while the trial is active.
What happens when time runs out?
Google Play triggers a full-screen paywall inside the game. Gameplay remains blocked until you buy the full version. The documentation says progress is intended to carry over after purchase, but individual save, account and server behavior still depends on the game. The trial does not automatically charge you; it presents a purchase decision. Any refund afterward is governed by the normal Google Play refund policy, not a special Game Trials guarantee.

How to tell whether a game supports trials
Look for the actual Try control or trials module on the game’s listing. Game Trials launched on March 11, 2026 for select paid mobile games, so a paid price alone does not indicate eligibility. If the control is absent, the title may not participate, the rollout may not cover your account or region, or your device may be unsupported. There is no documented workaround that adds a trial to an ineligible listing.
Supported devices and current rollout
Google’s current developer documentation lists Game Trials for:
Rank #2
- Experience the classic run and gun action with a pal in 2-player local co-op
- Includes the “Delicious Last Course” expansion filled with new bosses and brand-new character Ms. Chalice
- Includes exclusive “Cuphead Funnies” comic collector cards & vintage-inspired “Cuphead Club Membership”, and a hand-drawn reversible coversheet
- Android phones
- Android tablets
- ChromeOS
- Android XR
They are not currently supported on Android TV, Wear OS or Android Auto. Google’s March 11, 2026 announcement described Google Play Games on PC support as planned for the future, so do not assume a mobile trial will work on a Windows PC unless that specific listing shows the feature.
Game Trials, Google Play Instant and Play Pass compared
| Feature | Game Trials | Google Play Instant | Google Play Pass |
|---|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Evaluate a selected paid game before buying | Launch an instant-enabled app or game without conventional installation | Subscription access to a changing catalog |
| Typical access | Up to 60 minutes of the full game | Often a limited opening slice; “Instant play” titles can be full experiences | More than 1,000 apps and games, generally without ads or in-app purchases |
| Installation | Required | Not required first | Apps are installed normally |
| Payment model | No upfront payment, then an optional one-time purchase | Separate from a paid-game trial | Recurring subscription; catalog and availability vary by country |
| What happens after access ends? | Purchase prompt blocks play | Depends on the instant experience | Access to subscription benefits ends when the subscription or billing period ends unless you buy the title separately |
See Google Play Instant’s overview for the distinction, and Google Play Pass Help for subscription rules. Similar labels such as “Try,” “Try now” and “Instant play” do not describe the same product.

Is one hour enough to judge a game?
What the trial can reveal
- Control responsiveness, loading and performance
- Graphics, sound and accessibility options
- Tutorial clarity and the opening gameplay loop
- Crashes, device compatibility and required log-ins
- Whether the purchase prompt and monetization expectations suit you
What it may not reveal
- Slow-building role-playing or strategy systems
- Endgame content, replay value and late-game monetization
- Long-term server stability or multiplayer population
- How a live-service game changes over time
External downloads, online services, account requirements and regional restrictions are game-specific. Google documents the trial mechanism but does not guarantee that every title’s additional setup will be available immediately.
Developer requirements and rollout controls
Developers enabling Game Trials need Play App Signing, an Android App Bundle and a minimum API level of 21. Google provides installer verification and anti-abuse protection. In Play Console, an existing game uses Monetize with Play → App pricing → Free trial → On/Off → Save. The first enablement for an existing title requires uploading and publishing a new app bundle. Trials can be delivered through internal, closed, open and production tracks so developers can test launch and paywall behavior.
Rank #4
- Graphics & Atmosphere: A fully remastered experience with completely reconstructed assets
- Teamplay: Local co-op, enhanced with new scoring and survival mechanics
- Challenge: Advanced mode accessible from the start
- Convenience: Customizable controls and quality-of-life features in the settings
- 3D Camera: 3D camera settings (normal and crazy)
Alternatives when there is no trial
- Google Play Instant: Use an instant-enabled experience without installing the full app, but expect a different, often smaller slice of the game. Read the Instant overview.
- Google Play Pass: Choose this when you want to sample many catalog titles rather than own one game. The catalog changes and country availability varies; access can end with the subscription. Sign-up is available at Google Play Pass.
- Normal purchase: If no trial exists, the remaining fallback is buying the game and relying on the standard Google Play refund policy, whose eligibility depends on the applicable rules.
Bottom line for players
Game Trials are a useful, low-risk way to evaluate participating paid Android games, especially for controls, performance and the opening loop. Treat the Try button as the only reliable availability signal, spend the 60 minutes deliberately because closing the app does not stop the clock, and remember that this is an opt-in feature—not a universal replacement for demos, reviews or refund rules.
