The avatar customizes your Play Games profile image; it is not a character creator for individual games.
From an unfinished discovery to a documented feature
On February 19, 2025, Android Authority reported finding an AI avatar generator in a teardown of Google Play Store version 44.9.19-29. The feature did not work in the tested build, so it was evidence of development, not confirmation of a release. A February 21 follow-up showed more of the apparent controls. (Android Authority’s report; Android Headlines’ follow-up.)
Google later announced Gen AI Avatars as part of an updated gamer-profile experience in September 2025. Its announcement and current Play Games profile instructions establish that the idea moved beyond the early teardown. The word “soon” in the original headline is now outdated.
How to create a Play Games avatar on Android
- Open the Google Play Store app on an Android phone or tablet.
- Tap You at the bottom of the screen.
- Tap Edit beside your current profile picture.
- Tap Get started, then follow the onscreen instructions to generate and select an avatar.
This is Google’s documented route. Labels or availability may differ by account, region, app version, or rollout state. Google documents avatar creation for Android phones and tablets; it does not give the same creation steps for PC, Android TV, or the web.

What the avatar changes—and what it does not
The image belongs to your Play Games profile, a gaming identity that Google describes as spanning Android and Google Play Games on PC. It is separate from your general Google Account profile photo. It also is not a playable character, nor does it replace a game’s own account or avatar system.
A game needs to display Play Games profile information for your avatar to appear there. Individual titles may use their own profile pictures or character systems instead, so do not assume the image will show up in every game.

What options might the generator offer?
The 2025 pre-release teardown and demonstration showed category-based choices rather than a confirmed open-ended prompt box. The examples below describe what appeared in that unfinished version—not a guaranteed list of controls in the current release.
| Observed category | Examples shown in the pre-release version |
|---|---|
| Character | Dragon, fox, cat, dog, octopus, robot, and warrior |
| Background | Forest, space, beach, desert, underwater, and sparkle |
| Art style | Comics, anime, 3D cartoon, and cinematic |
| Randomize | A dice control to generate combinations |
The current Google Help instructions confirm AI avatar creation but do not enumerate production-version styles or categories. They also do not promise arbitrary text prompting, photo-based likenesses, high-resolution downloads, or unlimited generations.

If you cannot find the option
Google does not establish that every account or region has identical access. If Edit or Get started is missing, check these points:
- Update Google Play Store and Google Play Games through the Play Store, then check again.
- Make sure the intended Google account is active in Play Store.
- Start from Play Store → You, not a game’s separate profile settings.
- Check whether the account is supervised or subject to age-related restrictions; Google’s profile guidance notes account restrictions but does not clearly specify AI-avatar access for every supervised account.
You can check whether you have a Play Games profile through Google’s documented management routes: on Android, Play Store → profile picture → Settings → General → Play Games profile; on the web, play.google.com/games/profile; or in Google Play Games on PC, through the profile image. These routes manage or confirm the profile; they are not documented as alternatives for generating an avatar. Avoid sideloading an APK to get the feature: the original discovery was unfinished code, not a reliable installation method.

Privacy, cost, and practical limits
Google presents avatar creation as a Play Games profile customization and its instructions list no separate purchase requirement. They do not establish whether generations are unlimited or explain the model, processing location, retention of prompts or images, support for uploaded photos, export options, or AI labels. Google Play’s separate developer rules for AI-generated content concern assets submitted by developers; they do not answer how gamer-profile avatars are processed or labeled.
Because a Play Games image is part of a broader gaming identity, consider what you want associated with that profile. The built-in generator is aimed at changing a profile image, not producing a professional logo, transparent artwork, exact likeness, or polished streamer mascot.

When a separate avatar app may make sense
For a basic Play Games profile picture, start with Google’s built-in option. A separate app may be more useful if you need photo transformation, more explicit art controls, gaming-brand templates, or an exportable asset—but check its listing, permissions, pricing, and data practices first.
- AI Avatar Maker: Create Avatar by Rstream Labs advertises photo-to-avatar conversion and anime, 3D, cartoon, fantasy, pop-art, and text-to-image styles. Its Play listing says it includes in-app purchases and may share personal information and app activity with third parties.
- AI Gaming & Esport Logo Maker by WP GAMES focuses on gaming profile images, esports-style designs, prompts, and templates. Its listing’s data-safety disclosures say no data is collected or shared, but also say data is not encrypted and cannot be deleted. These are developer-provided disclosures, not an independent privacy audit.
Those apps bring separate data-handling and purchase considerations. If Google’s integrated avatar meets your needs, there is no reason to install another app just to change your Play Games profile image.
