The headline describes Google Play Pass’s U.S. launch on September 23, 2019: more than 350 apps and games, normally $4.99 a month, with a temporary introductory price of $1.99 a month for the first year. It is not a current catalog description. Google now advertises more than 1,000 apps and games, though availability varies by country and the catalog changes over time.
What Google Play Pass launched with in 2019
Google introduced Play Pass in the United States on September 23, 2019, as a recurring subscription for a curated selection of Android apps and games. The launch catalog contained more than 350 titles. Subscribers could access included paid apps and games without buying each separately, and Google said catalog titles would have ads removed and in-app purchases unlocked. These were subscription benefits, not permanent ownership of every title.
Google’s launch examples included Stardew Valley, Terraria, Monument Valley, Risk, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, AccuWeather, LIMBO and Mini Metro. The service launched in the U.S., with Google saying more countries would follow. The family manager could share the subscription with up to five additional family members.
Google’s September 2019 launch announcement set the standard price at $4.99 per month, with a 10-day trial. A limited U.S. introductory offer cost $1.99 per month for the first 12 months, then reverted to $4.99 per month. That launch promotion and trial length should not be assumed to be available now.

What Play Pass offers now
Google’s current product and support pages advertise more than 1,000 apps and games. For titles in the catalog, Play Pass removes ads and unlocks in-app purchases; included paid titles are available at no additional charge while the subscription is active. The catalog is curated, not the entire Google Play Store, and its contents vary by country and can change as titles are added or removed. See Google’s current Play Pass help page and Play Pass product page.
Google also presents offers for selected games that are outside the catalog. Examples on its current page include offers connected with MONOPOLY GO!, Roblox, Monster Hunter Now, Royal Match and EA SPORTS FC Soccer Mobile 26. An offer or discount is not the same as full catalog access: check the individual listing and offer terms before subscribing on the assumption that a particular game is included.

Google’s public product page requires sign-in to begin and does not show a universal U.S. monthly price in the accessible page content. Verizon’s partner page displays $4.99 per account, but that is a partner-page price signal, not a substitute for checking the amount and billing terms shown in your own Google Play account. The historical 2020 U.S. annual plan was $29.99; that old price is not confirmation of a current annual option. The price and trial, if any, presented at signup are the relevant terms for your account.
Who can subscribe, and how to start
Google lists Android 4.4 or later and Google Play Store version 16.6.25 or later among its requirements. You also need to be in a country where Play Pass is available, have a valid payment method, and have matching billing and Google Play countries. A personal Google account is required; work- or school-managed accounts cannot subscribe. Meeting the subscription’s minimum Android requirement does not guarantee that every individual catalog app will run on an older device, since each title may have its own requirements.

Labels can differ depending on account, country, app version and whether you are the family manager. If Play Pass is missing, check country availability, update the Play Store, confirm the account is not managed by a workplace or school, and review Google’s eligibility requirements.
How to check whether a title is included
Browse the Play Pass section in Google Play or look for the Play Pass badge or ticket icon on an app or game listing. Check your local listing before subscribing: catalog membership is not universal across countries and is not guaranteed to persist. If an app you already have is added to the catalog, supported subscription benefits may apply without a fresh installation. Make sure you are signed into the Google account holding the subscription if a listed title still shows ads or purchase prompts.

How family sharing works
The family manager can share Play Pass with up to five other family members. Each person uses their own account and may need to activate Play Pass after accepting the family invitation. Members can use included apps and games independently, but monthly in-game offers and certain related benefits are limited to the family manager. If the manager cancels, the family group’s access ends when the billing period expires unless members arrange their own subscriptions.

| Event | What to expect |
|---|---|
| A title leaves the catalog | A free app or game may continue to work but regain ads or in-app purchase requirements. A paid title may remain usable temporarily; you may later need to buy it separately. |
| You cancel Play Pass | Access continues through the current billing period. Canceling does not uninstall apps or erase their data. |
| The subscription period ends | Ads may return, in-app purchases may become separately chargeable, and a paid title may prompt you to purchase it. The Play Pass tab disappears after the subscription ends. |
| You uninstall an app | Uninstalling a title does not cancel the subscription. |
| The family manager’s subscription ends | Family members lose Play Pass access at the end of the billing period. |
To cancel, open Google Play Store, tap your profile picture, then Payments & subscriptions > Subscriptions > Play Pass > Cancel subscription. Google says Play Pass cannot currently be paused. The installed app and its data may remain, but that does not preserve subscription-only benefits or amount to permanent ownership.

Is Google Play Pass worth it?
Judge it by the titles you expect to use, how often you play, and who will share it—not by the catalog count alone. At the historical $4.99 monthly launch price, 12 months would total about $59.88 before taxes; this is arithmetic based on the 2019 launch price, not a confirmation of today’s account-level price. Compare the actual current offer in your account with the cost of buying the games you want outright.
- Likely better value: You regularly play several included paid games, want ad-free versions of supported titles, try new apps often, or have several family members who will use the catalog.
- Less compelling: You only want one specific game, that game is outside your local catalog, you rarely download paid apps, or you prefer owning a title rather than paying for continuing access.
- Check carefully: You primarily play online games with separate subscriptions or accounts, or are interested in a game that appears only in an offer rather than the catalog.
For one or two known games, buying them individually may suit you better. Apple Arcade is aimed at Apple-device users rather than Android households; Netflix Games is an added benefit for eligible Netflix members, not a replacement for Play Pass’s Android app-and-game catalog. If you already use either service, compare the games you actually want rather than assuming the catalogs are interchangeable.
