Google was reported in March and April 2022 to be developing a ChromeOS launcher feature that could answer a practical question: where can I play this game in the cloud? Chromium code described a game search result followed by the cloud gaming platforms on which that title was playable. The evidence showed development work, not a product launch, and available sources do not establish that this cross-service aggregator ever shipped or remains accessible.
What Google’s proposed Game Search was supposed to do
The reported feature was part of the ChromeOS launcher. Instead of searching each cloud gaming service separately, a user would search for a game by name and see the services that offered it for cloud play.
A translator note in the Chromium change described the intended interface this way: “Shown next to a video game search result, begins a list of cloud gaming platforms the game is playable on.” The wording indicates a platform list attached to a game result; it does not describe a new Google streaming service.
The problem it targeted
Cloud gaming availability is fragmented. A title may be offered by one service, unavailable in a user’s region, or included only with a particular subscription tier. A launcher-level search could have provided a single starting point for checking those options.

What the evidence did not promise
- It did not announce a Google-owned cloud gaming catalog.
- It did not confirm that every cloud provider or game would be indexed.
- It did not establish regional availability, subscription requirements, pricing, or direct launching into a service.
- It did not confirm versions for Google TV, Android, or other platforms.
Where the report came from
9to5Google identified Chromium code changes on March 30, 2022. Chrome Unboxed discussed the same work on April 4, 2022, describing a central place to find games across services. The underlying evidence was code and interface text rather than a formal Google product announcement.
Some ideas in the contemporaneous coverage—such as a standalone app, a Google TV expansion, or a complete game launcher—were speculation. They should not be treated as committed functionality.

Did this cloud-service aggregator launch?
There is no confirmed answer in the available documentation. The sources establish that a ChromeOS “Game Search” concept was being developed in 2022, but they do not establish that the specific cloud-platform aggregator shipped or is still available.
That distinction matters when interpreting the original headline. “Is creating” accurately reflected a 2022 development report; it should not be read today as proof that Chromebook users can access the feature.

Do not confuse it with Google’s later Game Search tools
Google later used similar terminology for other products. Those documented tools should be kept separate from the 2022 ChromeOS cloud catalog.

What Google has documented since then
2024: broader Play Store and device discovery
At the March 2024 Google for Games Developer Summit, Google described game promotions and videos in the Play Store, cross-device progress and achievements where a game supports them and is compatible with PC, and expanded support for native PC games. These initiatives concern distribution and continuity within Google’s ecosystem, not a search across cloud streaming providers.

2025: Play Games expansion
In March 2025, Google described updates to Play Games across PC and mobile, including catalog expansion and gameplay controls. The announcement did not identify the 2022 ChromeOS launcher aggregator as an active product.
September 2025: personalized Play discovery
Google announced a personalized You tab and Guided Search that can organize apps around goals such as “deck-building games.” This is recommendation and app discovery, not documentation of a search that checks where a game can be streamed in the cloud.

What Chromebook users can conclude
- The 2022 project was intended to make “which games can be played where” easier to answer from the ChromeOS launcher.
- The quoted Chromium text supports a game-first search flow: search for a title, then see cloud platforms associated with it.
- No reviewed source confirms a public rollout, supported Chromebook models, provider coverage, or current access.
- Google’s later Play Games search and discovery features should not be presented as proof that the cloud aggregator launched.
