As of October 8, 2026, MADFINGER Games describes Gray Zone Warfare as a PvE-first open-world tactical shooter, but the game has not dropped PvEvP. Its announced Update 0.5: Rogue Ops is due October 22, with Supporter Preview starting October 19. Those are planned dates and features, not confirmation that the update is live.
Is Gray Zone Warfare PvE or PvP?
It supports both. MADFINGER Games’ official homepage calls Gray Zone Warfare a “PvE-First Open-World Tactical Shooter.” The label describes the developer’s emphasis; it does not mean PvP has been removed. The announced 0.5 character system keeps PvEvP as a selectable mode. MADFINGER Games’ official site presents the current positioning.
In a March 14, 2025 FAQ, the MADFINGER Games Team put it this way: “While Winds of War introduces new PvP features, PvE remains a key focus in Gray Zone Warfare.” That statement supports the developer’s continued focus on PvE while acknowledging PvP’s place in the game. It is a dated description, not a guarantee that every mechanic or priority remains unchanged. Read the official roadmap FAQ.
| Mode | What it means for play |
|---|---|
| PvE | Players face AI rather than other players as opponents. |
| PvEvP | Other players can be opponents alongside the game’s AI threats. |
The FAQ also described PvE Combat Outposts as sites where the first faction had to fight AI defenders; after an outpost was secured, faction members could access it, and guards returned after a server restart. Those details come from the March 2025 explanation and may not describe every later patch. The official sources do not establish how many players currently choose either mode.

What is changing in Update 0.5: Rogue Ops?
MADFINGER Games announced on October 1, 2026, that Update 0.5: Rogue Ops would launch October 22, with Supporter Preview beginning October 19. The studio calls it the milestone that moves the game from pre-alpha to alpha. As of October 8, the update remains upcoming; announced dates and features can change. See the Rogue Ops announcement.
Hideout, crafting and smuggling
The announced gameplay loop centers on building a Hideout and crafting. Players will also be able to take on the role of a rogue PMC and engage in smuggling activities. The teaser additionally promises new weapons, large locations and other content. These are planned additions, not features to assume are already available.
Characters, modes and factions
In an October 4 devlog, the developer said an account could have up to four playable characters. Each character is assigned a faction and one of two modes—PvE or PvEvP—with progression kept separate by mode. When entering the preview or full update, players must choose which mode receives their existing character progression; MADFINGER says that decision is irreversible. The official devlog explains the character changes.
Other announced changes
The devlog also outlines planned audio reworks, new AI behavior, animation changes, a streamlined health system and Combat Outpost adjustments. Among the AI changes, NPCs will be able to heal themselves and selected factions will be able to throw grenades. The planned medical changes include healing by body part and adjustments to how medical items are used. The announcement does not establish these changes as live before the update.

What does the 0.5 soft wipe keep?
MADFINGER Games describes the 0.5 reset as a soft wipe. It preserves some character progress but clears inventory and cash; “soft” does not mean that nothing is lost.

Players must also assign their existing character progression to either PvE or PvEvP under the announced mode system. The developer says that choice cannot be reversed. The retained and cleared items above are the studio’s stated plan for the update, not an independently verified post-launch outcome. The Rogue Ops devlog and update announcement provide the details.

The studio also announced a 33% Steam sale running through October 8 at 10 a.m. PDT / 7 p.m. CEST. That stated end time falls on the date of this article, so do not assume the offer remains available; check Steam for current pricing.

The label tells you how MADFINGER Games positions the game, and the announced 0.5 plan makes PvE and PvEvP separate choices for each character. It does not establish which mode is more popular, whether current performance or quality differs between modes, or whether every announced feature will arrive as described. The official material is useful for understanding the developer’s plans, but it is not independent player research.
