Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If YouTube reports an unsupported codec while you send a prerecorded file through GStreamer, first identify whether the issue is the YouTube ingest protocol, a missing local decoder or encoder, or a caps/muxing mismatch. For a standard RTMP/RTMPS workflow, the usual conversion path is to decode the file, encode video as H.264 and audio as AAC, mux both into FLV, then send the result to YouTube. The exact cause cannot be determined from the error summary alone.
Why the codec error needs diagnosis
A prerecorded file passes through several components before it reaches YouTube: GStreamer must demux and decode its streams, convert the raw media as needed, encode for the selected ingest workflow, mux the encoded streams, and send them over the network. An error can originate at any of those stages, or from YouTube rejecting the selected ingest format.
YouTube’s published encoder guidance is protocol-dependent. For RTMP/RTMPS, it lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video, plus AAC or MP3 audio; YouTube recommends RTMPS. Its HLS ingest workflow is an alternative for codecs not supported by RTMP and for HDR. HLS is a different ingest workflow, not a codec change that can be made merely by swapping an encoder in an unchanged RTMP/FLV pipeline. YouTube’s live encoder settings and HLS setup guidance describe the respective options.
The H.264/AAC pipeline below is a practical RTMP/RTMPS conversion pattern. It is not a claim that every source file must be transcoded: if the streams are already compatible with the target muxer and ingest workflow, preserving them may avoid unnecessary compute and quality loss.

Check the input and installed elements
GStreamer’s uridecodebin selects source, demuxer and decoder elements based on the URI and the plugins installed on the machine. It cannot decode a format for which no suitable decoder is available. Check the source streams and verify the elements before building the pipeline:
gst-inspect-1.0 uridecodebin
gst-inspect-1.0 x264enc
gst-inspect-1.0 voaacenc
gst-inspect-1.0 flvmux
gst-inspect-1.0 rtmpsink
These are example checks for a software H.264/AAC pipeline. Another installed AAC encoder may be appropriate in place of voaacenc. Element availability depends on the GStreamer version, operating system and plugin packages; do not assume that an element is installed just because GStreamer itself is present. The GStreamer tutorial covers URI decoding, conversion and resampling, while its references document flvmux and rtmpsink.

Run an illustrative H.264/AAC-to-FLV pipeline
Replace the file URI and RTMPS endpoint with your own. Keep the stream key private; the redacted value here is deliberately not a usable key.
gst-launch-1.0 -e
uridecodebin uri="file:///path/to/input.mkv" name=d
flvmux name=mux streamable=true !
rtmpsink location="rtmps://a.rtmp.youtube.com/live2/REDACTED_KEY live=1"
d. ! queue ! videoconvert ! x264enc ! mux.
d. ! queue max-size-time=5000000000 max-size-bytes=0 max-size-buffers=0 !
audioconvert ! audioresample ! voaacenc ! mux.
This is an illustrative starting point, not a command verified for every platform, source file or YouTube stream configuration. It assumes the input has both audio and video and that the required plugins are available. For a file with no audio or no video, remove the absent branch. A program using GStreamer directly should handle dynamic pads and stream selection explicitly, particularly for files with multiple tracks; command-line autoplugging is convenient for a basic example, not a complete selection policy.

The pipeline decodes the source, converts the raw video and audio, encodes H.264 and AAC, then feeds both into FLV muxing. The GStreamer FLV muxer expects H.264 in AVC stream format. rtmpsink sends the resulting FLV content to an RTMP server. Confirm the output caps and that your YouTube stream is configured for the matching ingest workflow.
Diagnose the error from source to destination
- Capture the full error. Save the complete YouTube or encoder report and the full GStreamer bus error. The phrase “unsupported codec” alone does not identify which component rejected the stream.
- Confirm the ingest protocol. Determine whether the destination is RTMP/RTMPS or HLS, then match the codec and container/muxer to that workflow. YouTube’s guidance recommends RTMPS for the RTMP route; HLS has its own setup requirements.
- Inspect the source streams. Verify which audio and video tracks exist and whether GStreamer has decoders for their formats. If URI decoding fails, check the relevant source, demuxer and decoder elements rather than changing the YouTube output encoder blindly.
- Check each output branch and mux connection. For RTMP output, confirm that encoded video can negotiate with
flvmux, that audio is accepted, and that the muxer output reachesrtmpsink. The FLV muxer’s H.264 input uses AVC stream format. - Inspect negotiated caps. Run with verbose output and inspect the relevant element capabilities:
gst-launch-1.0 -v ...
gst-inspect-1.0 ELEMENT
Replace ELEMENT with the element to inspect. Verbose output helps show the formats negotiated between linked elements. Caps filters can constrain a format where a known target format is required, but adding filters without checking the actual pad capabilities may create another negotiation failure. See GStreamer’s guide to decodebin, conversion and related elements.

- Use the appropriate sender for HLS if needed. If the intended codec or HDR workflow is not supported by your RTMP path, assess YouTube HLS ingest and an HLS-capable sender rather than expecting an RTMP/FLV pipeline to carry it.
Handle stalls, queue errors and quality trade-offs
x264enc can buffer multiple seconds before producing output. In a multi-branch pipeline, that delay can cause the other branch to run out of queue space or contribute to startup and preroll problems. The example gives the audio queue a larger time limit and disables its byte and buffer-count limits; adjust queue behavior only after checking the actual error and pipeline timing.
GStreamer’s transcoding tutorial also notes tune=zerolatency as a possible way to reduce encoder latency for live use, with a quality trade-off. It is not a universal fix. Choose encoder settings, resolution, bitrate, profile and keyframe behavior to match current YouTube recommendations and the specific stream requirements; do not copy values without confirming that they fit the ingest mode and desired output.

Choose between pass-through, transcoding and HLS
| Option | When it fits | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Pass through compatible streams | The source codecs, container and muxer are already compatible with the chosen ingest workflow. | Confirm the actual stream caps and muxer support. The GStreamer references document H.264 AVC input for FLV muxing; do not assume every source container can be forwarded unchanged. |
| Decode and re-encode for RTMP/RTMPS | The input needs conversion for the RTMP output path; the example uses H.264 video and AAC audio in FLV. | Install suitable decoder and encoder plugins, check caps negotiation, and account for compute use and possible quality loss from transcoding. YouTube lists additional codec choices in its RTMP/RTMPS guidance, so select according to the actual workflow. |
| Use HLS ingest | The required codec is not supported by the RTMP workflow or the stream requires an HDR workflow documented for HLS. | HLS needs an HLS-capable sending workflow and YouTube’s HLS setup; it is not achieved by changing only the codec in an RTMP/FLV pipeline. |
Common failure symptoms and fixes
- “No such element” or missing-plugin error: the selected decoder, encoder, muxer or sink is not installed. Use
gst-inspect-1.0to check availability and install the appropriate GStreamer plugin package for the environment. - Source decoding fails before encoding: inspect the complete error and source stream details. Confirm a decoder exists for each track, and account for files with multiple audio or video streams.
- Caps negotiation fails at the muxer: run
gst-launch-1.0 -v, inspect the linked elements’ pad capabilities, and ensure the encoded stream format is accepted by the muxer. For FLV H.264, the documented format is AVC. - Startup stalls or queue/preroll errors: examine the queues on both branches and the encoder’s buffering behavior. The GStreamer tutorial discusses increasing queue capacity on the audio branch;
tune=zerolatencyis another option to evaluate if its quality trade-off is acceptable. - YouTube still reports an unsupported format: verify the selected ingest protocol and the complete YouTube message. A codec accepted in one YouTube workflow should not be assumed to work in another.
