That difference shapes how each game presents its characters, builds relationships and moves its plot. Neither structure is automatically better: GTA V offers contrast and variety, while RDR2 sustains one central point of view within a large ensemble.
How the protagonists shape each story
GTA V: three intersecting leads
Grand Theft Auto V follows Michael, Franklin and Trevor, shifting between their distinct lives and storylines. The characters’ contrasting personalities and circumstances are part of the storytelling engine: Michael is older and retired but tough, Franklin is younger and trying to rise, and Trevor acts as a disruptive opposite. Their threads intersect, with major heists among the points where the stories converge.
Dan Houser, then a Rockstar co-founder and co-writer, said the idea grew partly from working on the two Grand Theft Auto IV downloadable episodes, where the moments when storylines crossed felt promising. He explained: “Partly, too, it was because at that point we were deep into the work on the two DLC episodes of GTA IV, and we thought, well, the bits where all the stories crossover is kind of cool, so why don’t we just do that in one game? So okay, let’s just do multiple characters.” (The Guardian, November 2012.)
RDR2: one sustained viewpoint
Red Dead Redemption 2 anchors the story in Arthur Morgan. Rockstar art director Josh Bass said the single-protagonist approach suited the Western’s structure and narrative: “Sticking with a single character felt more appropriate for the structure and narrative of a Western.” (PC Gamer, September 2018.)

That focus does not mean the story is solitary. Arthur lives and fights alongside the Van der Linde gang, and the group’s relationships—with Arthur and among its members—provide the surrounding character drama. Bass described the intention this way: “Arthur lives with and fights alongside the other members of the Van der Linde gang, and they are a group of fully realized characters with relationships to each other and to Arthur, but this is Arthur’s story and we are placing players firmly in Arthur’s boots as he and the gang deal with a rapidly changing world.” (PC Gamer, September 2018.)
What each structure makes possible

Switching protagonists lets GTA V place different temperaments and situations side by side, then bring them together. The trade-off is that the player’s attention moves among leads. RDR2 trades that rotation for continuity: the player experiences the wider group through sustained proximity to Arthur. Its ensemble remains important, but Arthur is the anchor.

Which game has the better story and characters?
There is no objective measure in the cited material that settles character quality or makes one structure universally superior. The choice depends on what kind of storytelling you prefer: GTA V’s shifting perspectives and sharp contrasts, or RDR2’s sustained central viewpoint and its focus on relationships within a gang.
A comparative feature by Twinfinite praises GTA V’s overlapping narratives and character contrasts, while arguing that RDR2 has greater narrative depth, particularly through Arthur and Dutch’s gang. That is the publication’s critical judgment, not a definitive verdict or evidence of universal consensus. (Twinfinite.)

Which one should you play for its story?
- Choose GTA V if you want a story built around several playable leads, contrasting personalities and intersecting plotlines.
- Choose Red Dead Redemption 2 if you want one protagonist at the center of the experience, with an ensemble whose relationships surround his perspective.
Those are different narrative designs rather than interchangeable versions of the same approach. GTA V’s defining move is to make the contrast among its three leads part of the plot; RDR2’s is to make Arthur the consistent point of entry into a group story.
