“Free” meant included with a subscription, not permanently given away. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas – The Definitive Edition joined Xbox Game Pass on November 11, 2021, while Grand Theft Auto III – The Definitive Edition joined PlayStation Now on December 7, 2021.
The short answer
“Free” meant included with a subscription, not permanently given away. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas – The Definitive Edition joined Xbox Game Pass on November 11, 2021, while Grand Theft Auto III – The Definitive Edition joined PlayStation Now on December 7, 2021.
Neither announcement described a no-subscription giveaway or a permanent license. Access depended on having the relevant active subscription and on the games remaining in that service’s catalog. The trilogy was also sold as a paid collection.
What happened in 2021?
| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| October 22, 2021 | Rockstar announced that San Andreas – The Definitive Edition would launch in Xbox Game Pass and that GTA III – The Definitive Edition would come to PlayStation Now. |
| November 11, 2021 | The digital version of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition launched. Xbox Game Pass subscribers received access to San Andreas that day. |
| December 7, 2021 | GTA III was added to PlayStation Now. Physical console editions of the trilogy also began releasing. |
| January 31, 2022 | Sony’s announcement listed GTA III as available through PlayStation Now until this date, confirming that the offer was time-limited. |
So the original headline was describing two separate subscription placements, not a single promotion in which all three games became free.

Which games were included?
Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition contains:
- Grand Theft Auto III
- Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
- Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
Only San Andreas was announced for Xbox Game Pass at launch. Only GTA III was announced for PlayStation Now beginning December 7, 2021. The announcements did not say that Vice City was included in either of those specific subscription placements.
Subscription access versus ownership
There are three different meanings often blurred together when a game is described as “free”:
- No-cost giveaway: You obtain a license without paying for a game or subscription.
- Subscription inclusion: You can download and play the game while your qualifying membership is active and the title remains in the catalog.
- Purchase: You buy a digital or physical copy and retain the associated license, subject to the platform’s rules.
The 2021 San Andreas and GTA III offers were in the second category. An Xbox Game Pass membership was required for the former, and PlayStation Now membership was required for the latter. Ending the subscription, losing access to the account, or removal of the game from the catalog could prevent further access. Downloading a catalog game did not turn it into a permanently owned copy.

Was the trilogy sold separately?
Yes. Rockstar released the collection as a paid product alongside the subscription placements. The digital edition launched on November 11, 2021, for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC through the Rockstar Games Launcher.
Physical editions were announced for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S, with a December 7, 2021 release date. The official physical product was the trilogy collection; the announcements did not establish a separate boxed GTA III – The Definitive Edition release.
What changed in the Definitive Edition?
Rockstar described the remasters as having several modernization and presentation upgrades, including:

What about PlayStation Now today?
GTA III was added to PlayStation Now, the name used in the 2021 announcement. PlayStation Now was later folded into the broader PlayStation Plus service, so “PlayStation Now” is accurate when describing the historical offer but should not be treated as the current name of a standalone service.
The available evidence for this story confirms the 2021 catalog window, including the January 31, 2022 end date stated in Sony’s announcement. It does not establish that the same game is currently included in a PlayStation Plus catalog.
Did the games later become available through Netflix?
Yes. In December 2023, Rockstar announced mobile versions of all three Definitive Edition games for iOS and Android. The mobile editions remained individually purchasable and were also included for Netflix users as part of their subscription. Netflix separately announced the arrival of the trilogy on its service.

It also should not be confused with permanent ownership: Netflix inclusion is subscription access, while an individual mobile purchase is a separate transaction.
Can you still get “free” access now?
Do not rely on the old headline as a current availability guide. The verified announcements establish that:
- San Andreas was included with Xbox Game Pass from November 11, 2021.
- GTA III was included with PlayStation Now from December 7, 2021, through the listed January 31, 2022 window.
- The mobile trilogy became available to Netflix users in December 2023, while remaining purchasable individually.
They do not prove that those exact catalog placements remain active now. Catalogs change by date, country, subscription tier, platform, and licensing terms. Anyone checking current access should verify the live Xbox, PlayStation, Netflix, or mobile storefront listing for their region before subscribing or buying.

Bottom line
The accurate version of the story is: GTA San Andreas – The Definitive Edition launched in Xbox Game Pass, while GTA III – The Definitive Edition joined PlayStation Now in December 2021. Both were temporary subscription benefits rather than permanent free copies. The complete Definitive Edition trilogy was sold separately on digital storefronts and in physical console editions, and the mobile versions later became part of Netflix’s game offering.

When did GTA III become available on PlayStation Now?
GTA III: The Definitive Edition was added to PlayStation Now on December 7, 2021. Sony listed it as available through January 31, 2022. PlayStation Now was later incorporated into PlayStation Plus.
Which games are in GTA: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition?
The Definitive Edition collection contains GTA III, Vice City, and San Andreas. The 2021 subscription announcements specifically identified San Andreas for Xbox Game Pass and GTA III for PlayStation Now; they did not identify Vice City as part of either offer.
Can Netflix subscribers play the GTA Definitive Edition games?
Rockstar announced mobile versions for iOS and Android in December 2023. They were individually purchasable and included for Netflix users as part of their subscription. That arrangement also provided subscription access rather than permanent ownership.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: “Free” referred to temporary access through an active subscription. San Andreas was the Xbox Game Pass game at launch, while GTA III joined PlayStation Now on December 7, 2021. Neither offer amounted to permanent ownership, and current catalog availability requires a fresh regional check.
