Gunzilla Games and Ava Labs announced their GUNZ partnership on April 5, 2023: a gaming-focused blockchain platform built using Avalanche Subnet technology, with Off The Grid as its first announced game integration. The plan went beyond adding NFTs to one shooter. Gunzilla also proposed tools and services that other studios could use to build game economies on GUNZ. Avalanche’s current Builder Hub still lists a Gunzilla network, but that listing alone does not establish player adoption, commercial success, or the availability of every originally proposed feature.
What Gunzilla and Avalanche announced
The announcement brought together Gunzilla Games, an independent game studio, and Ava Labs, the company associated with developing Avalanche. They presented GUNZ as a blockchain-based digital-economy platform created by Gunzilla and built on an Avalanche Subnet. GamesBeat published its report on April 5, 2023, and updated it on June 18, 2025. GamesBeat’s report and Avalanche’s announcement describe a historical partnership, not a newly announced deal.

GUNZ was pitched as infrastructure for game economies, not simply a cryptocurrency or a standalone NFT marketplace. The proposed stack included blockchain services, a wallet and companion-app experience, a marketplace, NFT minting, and developer tools. Gunzilla’s broader proposition was that it could use the platform for its own games and offer components to other studios.
How GUNZ was supposed to work
A dedicated network for game activity
In 2023, the companies called GUNZ an Avalanche Subnet and a gaming-focused Layer 1. Avalanche’s current documentation increasingly uses “Avalanche L1” for customized, application-specific networks. The terminology has evolved, but the central idea is a network designed for a particular ecosystem rather than a game relying entirely on a shared general-purpose chain. Avalanche’s current Builder Hub describes its platform and tooling.

A dedicated chain can give its operator more control over fee rules and network configuration. It does not, by itself, host a game in the same way a cloud provider hosts game servers: matchmaking, anti-cheat, content delivery, and ordinary game backends are separate systems unless specifically documented otherwise.
In-game tokens for gas
Gas is the fee for processing a blockchain transaction. Gunzilla’s stated design goal was to let players pay transaction fees with in-game tokens rather than requiring them to manage a separate network token for every action. The companies also cited customization and low-latency gameplay as reasons for using a dedicated network. These were strategic goals and company claims, not independently established performance results or proof that every later transaction was fee-free.

Items, wallets, and marketplaces
The announced platform was intended to support tokenized in-game items, minting, and trading through a marketplace, with a companion app as part of the player-facing experience. The proposal was often described as “play-to-own”: gameplay could provide a route to persistent digital items. That phrase does not mean players are guaranteed income, that every item has resale value, or that all content in a game is freely tradable.
A token representing an item is not the same as copyright ownership of its artwork or underlying game content. Access to assets can also depend on a game’s rules, marketplace policies, wallets, and continued operation of the game and network.

Why Off The Grid mattered
Off The Grid was announced as the first game to integrate GUNZ. Avalanche described it as a narrative-driven “Battle Royale 2.0” in which player decisions would affect gameplay and story. The blockchain proposal centered on ownership and trading of certain digital items, plus item histories—not a claim that every part of the game or every item would be on-chain. The companies’ original framing is set out in Avalanche’s GUNZ announcement; the game’s official site is Off The Grid.
GUNZ was presented as broader than this one title. Off The Grid was the flagship first integration, while the platform was also meant to support other games. That distinction matters: a game using a network does not establish that outside studios adopted it.

The developer proposition—and what remains unproven
Gunzilla announced a GUNZ SDK and white-label components that could let other studios build economies without assembling every blockchain service themselves. The named components included a companion app, marketplace, and NFT-minting engine. For a studio, the appeal would be a more tailored fee and wallet experience and potentially less work on blockchain-specific infrastructure.
But an announcement of tools is not evidence that they are generally available, self-serve, or commercially adopted. The reviewed announcements did not state SDK pricing, licensing terms, onboarding conditions, or support commitments. They also do not establish which third-party games launched on GUNZ. Studios evaluating the proposition would need current product documentation and direct confirmation of those terms.
Best Value
- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.

Trade-offs for players, studios, and the network
- Network security and control: A dedicated application chain brings configuration control, but the network’s validator participation, security arrangements, and long-term maintenance still matter. The announcements do not settle who controls each operational decision.
- Liquidity and adoption: A marketplace is useful only if players can access it and there is meaningful demand for items. A flagship game’s success does not automatically produce third-party adoption or liquid markets.
- Portability and shutdown risk: Tokenization does not ensure that an item works in another game, survives a game shutdown, or remains usable after a publisher changes its rules.
- Player friction and safety: Wallet setup, account recovery, scams, and marketplace steps can complicate play even when transaction fees are designed to be abstracted away.
- Market and policy uncertainty: Tokenized items can be volatile or illiquid, and regulatory or platform-policy changes can affect sales, trading, and monetization.
What can be verified about GUNZ today
Avalanche’s Builder Hub currently lists Gunzilla among its networks and provides a Gunzilla explorer. That is evidence of a listed network presence, not a measure of its activity or proof that the entire announced platform is operating as originally described. The explorer page does not provide readable current statistics in the reviewed material, so transaction counts, active addresses, validators, and fee levels cannot responsibly be inferred from it.
The partnership’s significance is therefore clearest as a strategic design: Gunzilla sought to pair a AAA game with its own gaming blockchain and to make that infrastructure potentially useful to other developers. The available cited material does not establish current adoption, revenue, player activity, performance, or third-party commercial results.
