Choose Gyre if you want a managed workflow; choose a VPS with OBS if you want more control over the server and are prepared to configure and monitor it. Both routes send an encoder stream to YouTube, but they differ in setup, file handling, maintenance and published capacity. Current evidence does not establish a like-for-like VPS cost, so price alone cannot settle the choice.
How the two options keep a prerecorded stream live
Gyre: upload, make a playlist, start
Gyre is a hosted service. Its published workflow is to upload video files to Gyre storage, arrange them into a playlist, connect the YouTube destination and start the broadcast. Gyre says the playlist restarts after it finishes and its infrastructure runs the stream without your computer. See Gyre.
An existing YouTube upload does not skip the upload step: Gyre Help says the video files still need to be uploaded to Gyre storage. Its preparation guidance lists 1920×1080 or 1280×720, H.264, 3072–6144 kbps video, 128 kbps audio and 30 fps. These are Gyre’s published recommendations, not universal YouTube requirements; check the current help page before preparing a large batch of files: How to Prepare Videos for Streaming on Gyre.
VPS with OBS: configure and operate your own encoder
A VPS is a rented virtual server. In the cited Vultr example, the creator provisions Ubuntu, installs OBS Studio and FFmpeg, accesses a desktop remotely, configures YouTube credentials and video settings, then monitors performance while streaming. This offers more direct control of the environment, but server setup and ongoing monitoring become your responsibility. The guide is an example workflow, not a universal YouTube specification: Vultr’s OBS and Ubuntu streaming-server guide.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
In either case, YouTube receives an encoder feed. YouTube’s instructions say to enter the YouTube Live server URL and stream key into the encoder. Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel. See YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Gyre vs VPS with OBS: practical comparison
| Decision point | Gyre | VPS with OBS |
|---|---|---|
| Who operates the stream? | Gyre says its cloud runs the stream without your computer. | You provision and monitor the server and encoder, following the operational approach in Vultr’s guide. |
| Setup | Upload files, arrange a playlist, connect YouTube and start. | Provision Ubuntu, install OBS and FFmpeg, arrange remote access, configure the stream key and video settings, then monitor the encoder. |
| Content ingest | Files must be uploaded into Gyre storage, including videos already published on YouTube. | Source files must be accessible to your server and OBS workflow. The cited Vultr guide does not establish a particular file-transfer method. |
| Capacity | Published stream counts, resolutions and storage depend on plan. | Depends on the server resources, provider plan and workload; the Vultr example is not a universal sizing recommendation. |
| Cost comparison | Gyre’s listed monthly prices at the time of review were $49, $99 and $169 for Start, Start+ and PRO+, respectively; confirm current pricing and terms on Gyre’s pricing page. | A current VPS price for this workload, including bandwidth overages, storage and your administration time, is not established here. |
| Control and upkeep | Managed workflow within the service’s published limits. | More direct control of server configuration, with responsibility for setup and performance troubleshooting. |

What a VPS setup demands
Provisioning and example server size
Vultr’s 2025 guide gives an example minimum of 2 vCPUs, 4 GB RAM, 80 GB storage and 3 TB bandwidth for its Ubuntu/OBS workflow. Treat those figures as that provider’s example prerequisites, not a guaranteed fit for every video, resolution, frame rate or server provider. A heavier encode or multiple simultaneous outputs can need more capacity.

Encoding load and monitoring
Higher resolution and frame rate require more processing power. Vultr advises keeping OBS CPU use below 90% in its example workflow to reduce the risk of dropped frames and buffering. Monitor CPU and stream health during a test; if performance is unstable, reduce output demands or move to a server with more capacity.
Stream key and destination
Configure OBS with the YouTube Live server URL and stream key, then test the feed before relying on it for a continuous broadcast. Do not share screenshots or configuration files that expose the key. For official encoder steps, consult YouTube’s encoder instructions.

How to choose
- Choose Gyre when avoiding server administration matters more than direct control, and its file-upload workflow, stream limits, resolution options and storage fit your channel.
- Choose a VPS with OBS when you are comfortable managing Ubuntu, remote access, encoder settings, server capacity and stream monitoring, or need more control over the environment.
- Compare full costs, not just headline rates. For Gyre, check the current plan and capacity against your needs. For a VPS, account for compute, storage, bandwidth or overages and the time required to operate it. A current apples-to-apples cost comparison is not established by the available pricing details.
- Check content rights and YouTube policies. A prerecorded video being technically streamable does not establish that you have the rights to broadcast it or that it complies with YouTube rules. Use content you are authorized to stream and review YouTube’s current copyright and monetization policies before running a continuous channel.
Or let it run in the cloud
