H.264 Explained: What AVC Means for Streaming and Video Files

H.264 and AVC refer to the same video-coding standard. Learn how it differs from MP4 and AAC and why it remains an option for streaming compatibility.

H.264 is a video-coding standard, also known as AVC. It compresses moving images so they can be stored or delivered more efficiently. It is not a file format such as MP4, and it does not describe the audio in a video. H.264 remains useful to understand because streaming guidance, including Apple’s HLS specification, still lists it as an option and recommends it for some content needing backward compatibility.

What is H.264?

H.264 is a standard for compressing digital video. Its formal ITU-T title is “Advanced video coding for generic audiovisual services.” It was developed for applications including videoconferencing, digital storage, television broadcasting, Internet streaming, and communication across varied network environments. The goal is to represent moving pictures with higher compression than earlier standards while serving those varied uses.

In practical terms, an encoder can compress video using H.264, and a compatible decoder can reconstruct it for playback. The standard specifies how the video is coded; the container, audio encoding, and delivery method are separate decisions.

What does AVC mean? Is H.264 the same as AVC?

AVC stands for Advanced Video Coding. H.264 and AVC are names associated with the same jointly standardized technology: ITU-T H.264 and ISO/IEC 14496-10. The work was jointly standardized by ITU-T’s Video Coding Experts Group and ISO/IEC’s Moving Picture Experts Group. Fraunhofer HHI says the first version was finalized in May 2003, the same month the ITU-T record gives for approval of the first edition.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Thus, if an export setting says “H.264” and a specification says “AVC,” they generally refer to the same video-coding standard, not two competing codecs. The official records identify the standards as identical.

H.264, MP4, and AAC are different parts of a video

A video file or stream combines components that do different jobs. H.264/AVC describes how the video is encoded; MP4 describes a container family that can hold media tracks; and AAC is an audio codec. IEC’s encoding guidance explicitly treats MP4-family formats, AVC video, and AAC audio as separate components.

Term What it describes Example role
H.264 / AVC Video-coding standard Compresses the picture track
MP4 Container format family Packages media tracks and related information in a file
AAC Audio codec Compresses the audio track

So “an H.264 video” often means a video track encoded with H.264, not necessarily a file with one particular extension. A file labeled MP4 may contain H.264 video and AAC audio, but the container name alone does not guarantee which codecs its tracks use.

Why H.264 still appears in streaming guidance

Compatibility is a practical reason to recognize H.264. Apple’s HLS authoring specification lists H.264/AVC among the video encodings allowed by its guidance and says some content should use H.264 for backward compatibility. The same specification lists other encoding choices, so H.264 is not the only current streaming codec and is not automatically the right choice for every platform or project.

For a particular upload or stream, follow the target service’s current encoding requirements and consider the devices and software expected to play it. A codec choice is a delivery decision: broad compatibility may matter more than other priorities in one workflow, while another platform may specify a different option. The cited guidance does not establish a universal performance winner or a quantified bitrate or quality advantage.

What is the current H.264 standard edition?

As of October 2026, the ITU-T recommendation record lists H.264 version 16, approved in June 2026, as in force. Version 15, approved in August 2024, is superseded. The first edition was approved in May 2003. These are standards-edition dates; they do not by themselves indicate a change in image quality, compression efficiency, or device compatibility.

Keeping a prerecorded YouTube stream running

H.264 explains how the video is compressed; it does not, by itself, keep a live broadcast online. If your goal is to keep uploaded prerecorded videos looping as a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The service loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on.
