H.264 vs H.265 for Pre-Recorded YouTube Live Streams

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a pre-recorded video sent to a YouTube Live event, either H.264 or H.265 (HEVC) can work if your encoder or relay supports that codec and protocol. Choose the outgoing live-ingest settings—not YouTube’s separate recommendations for uploading a finished video. At the same resolution and frame rate, YouTube’s current guidance recommends a lower ingest bitrate for H.265 than H.264, but that is not a guarantee of better-looking video. For HDR live streaming, YouTube’s dedicated instructions require HEVC/H.265 and a separate HLS workflow.

Does YouTube Live accept H.264 and H.265?

Yes. YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 as supported ingest video codecs, with RTMP/RTMPS among the supported protocols. The codec choice here is the encoding your software or hardware sends to YouTube; it does not dictate the codec viewers receive. YouTube says it transcodes incoming live streams into output formats for different devices and networks. See YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance.

A pre-recorded stream still uses live ingest settings when an encoder or relay plays the footage and sends it into a YouTube Live event. Do not substitute YouTube’s ordinary video-upload recommendations: those address uploading a finished file, not sending an ongoing live stream. YouTube’s separate video upload encoding recommendations specify H.264 for uploads.

Which codec should you choose?

Choose H.265 when the full workflow supports it

H.265 is a sensible choice when your encoder or relay supports HEVC for the protocol you plan to use, and your upstream bandwidth is constrained. YouTube’s recommended live ingest bitrate is lower for H.265 than H.264 at the example resolutions below. That recommendation is a platform setting, not a controlled quality comparison; it does not establish that H.265 will always look better at a fixed bitrate or with every source and relay.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Choose H.264 for compatibility when needed

If your relay, hardware, or workflow cannot send H.265 over the required protocol, use a supported H.264 configuration instead. YouTube’s support for a codec does not ensure that a particular pre-recorded-streaming service or encoder supports it. Verify the exact codec-and-protocol combination in that product’s documentation, then test it with the actual source video.

For HDR, follow the separate HEVC workflow

YouTube’s dedicated HDR guidance calls for HEVC/H.265, 10-bit video, BT.2020 color, and HLS output. The standard live bitrate table is not a complete HDR setup recipe. Consult YouTube’s HDR live streaming guidance for the transport and playlist requirements before configuring an HDR stream.

What bitrate should you use for YouTube Live?

Use the row matching your outgoing codec, resolution, and frame rate in YouTube’s current live ingest bitrate table. The following are YouTube recommendations, not independent measurements or guarantees of visual quality. The guidance accessed in 2026 gives these example recommended rates:

Resolution and frame rate AV1 or H.265 recommended ingest bitrate H.264 recommended ingest bitrate
720p at 30 fps 6 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps 17 Mbps
2160p (4K) at 30 fps 30 Mbps 42 Mbps

These figures are for the stream sent to YouTube. They are not a promise of a particular image quality, nor do they indicate which codec YouTube will use for playback. The full table also includes minimum rates; consult the matching entry rather than extrapolating to an unlisted resolution or frame rate.

Set the other live-encoder parameters

  • Bitrate mode: YouTube specifies constant bitrate (CBR).
  • Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
  • Resolution and frame rate: Match the intended output and select the corresponding codec row in YouTube’s live table.
  • Protocol: Use a protocol supported by both YouTube and your encoder or relay; YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS for live ingest.

For HDR, follow the separate HLS and HEVC requirements rather than assuming these standard encoder settings cover the whole setup.

How to choose for a pre-recorded stream

  1. Check the encoder or relay. Confirm that it can play your recording and send H.264 or H.265 using the protocol you intend to use. Codec support on YouTube’s side alone is not enough.
  2. Decide on SDR or HDR. For HDR, use YouTube’s dedicated HEVC/HLS instructions, including 10-bit video and BT.2020. For standard dynamic range, use the live ingest table for the target codec and output format.
  3. Choose resolution and frame rate. Select the row matching your stream. Do not assume that a rate for 1080p30 applies to 1080p60 or 4K.
  4. Check upstream capacity. YouTube advises leaving network headroom; the stream’s total bitrate must fit the available upload bandwidth. Review YouTube’s encoder and network guidance and test the connection you will actually use.
  5. Configure and test the outgoing stream. Set CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, then run a test through the same relay, settings, and network planned for the live event. Check the YouTube preview and monitor for dropped frames or disconnects.
  6. Verify playback separately. Because YouTube transcodes live input, judge the viewer experience on the live output; do not expect the ingest codec to identify the playback codec on every device.

Common problems and fixes

  • The encoder cannot start an HEVC stream: Confirm that the specific encoder or relay supports H.265 with the selected protocol. If it does not, use a supported H.264 setup or another compatible encoder.
  • The stream drops frames or disconnects: Check whether the outgoing bitrate is too close to the available upstream capacity. Leave network headroom, use a stable connection, and test with the same bitrate and route.
  • The stream looks different from the source file: The ingest codec does not determine the exact output codec or format viewers receive. YouTube transcodes live streams; assess the live playback rather than assuming a source-to-viewer codec match.
  • HDR does not appear as expected: Check the HDR-specific requirements—HEVC/H.265, 10-bit video, BT.2020, and HLS output—in YouTube’s HDR instructions. A standard live encoder configuration alone may not satisfy them.
  • You applied upload settings to a live event: Recheck the live ingest table. The settings for uploading a finished video are a different workflow.
