Choose Half-Life: Alyx for a story-led adventure built around exploration, puzzles and deliberate combat. Choose BONEWORKS if experimental physics and physical interaction are your main draw—and you already have some VR experience. Both games require VR, so check your headset and PC compatibility before buying.
How the games differ
The clearest distinction is what each game puts at the center. Valve presents Half-Life: Alyx as a single-player story adventure in the Half-Life universe, emphasizing exploration, puzzles, environmental interaction and combat. The Steam listing places its story between Half-Life and Half-Life 2; the game was released on March 23, 2020.
BONEWORKS is described on its Steam listing as an experimental physics VR adventure. That makes it the more natural fit if interacting with objects and exploring physics-driven mechanics matters more to you than a story-led structure. These are distinctions drawn from the games’ official descriptions, not a claim that one is objectively better.
Which one should you play?
Choose Half-Life: Alyx if you want a guided story adventure
- You want to follow Alyx Vance through a new story set between the two earlier Half-Life games.
- You’re drawn to a mix of exploration, puzzles, environmental interaction and deliberate combat.
- You want a VR game whose official description emphasizes those authored adventure elements.
Choose BONEWORKS if physics experimentation is the draw
- You want experimental physics and physical interaction to be central to the experience.
- You have some prior VR experience: the Steam listing recommends previous experience and familiarity with common VR gameplay principles.
- You’re comfortable choosing a game for its experimental mechanics rather than primarily for a story-led adventure.
The recommendation for experienced VR players is a caution based on the game’s own advice, not proof that every newcomer will find BONEWORKS difficult. Your preference matters more than a supposed overall ranking: the official descriptions establish different emphases, not a head-to-head winner.

Check VR and PC compatibility before buying
Both titles are VR-only, so a conventional monitor-and-keyboard setup is not enough. Valve says Half-Life: Alyx works with any SteamVR-compatible system on its VR compatibility page. That statement concerns headset-system compatibility; it does not mean every computer can run the game well. Check each game’s current PC requirements as well as whether your headset and setup are supported.
- Confirm that your headset and setup support SteamVR for Half-Life: Alyx, and check the current system requirements for the game you’re considering.
- Review each Steam listing’s VR and system requirements before purchasing. Headset compatibility and the computer’s ability to run a game are separate checks.
- If you do not already have compatible VR hardware, factor that requirement into the decision before choosing between the games.
Are ratings or review counts a useful tiebreaker?
At the time Valve’s Steam listing was accessed on October 4, 2026, Half-Life: Alyx showed 98% positive from 61,672 English reviews and 97% positive from 482 recent reviews. Steam figures change over time, and these are user-review snapshots—not controlled quality measurements or a matched comparison with BONEWORKS. They do not settle which game better suits you.
