On Windows 11, a few keyboard shortcuts can capture gameplay, adjust audio, move between apps and monitors, or help recover a blank display. Start with Win + G for Xbox Game Bar, but remember that Windows shortcuts are not guaranteed to work in every game or display mode.
The essential shortcuts at a glance

Use Game Bar to capture gameplay
Xbox Game Bar is a customizable Windows overlay with capture, audio, performance, and other widgets. Press Win + G to open it, then use the widgets to adjust settings without navigating away from the game. Press the shortcut again or Esc to dismiss the overlay. Availability and features can vary by region and app version. Microsoft’s Game Bar overview describes its capabilities and game support.

Start or stop a recording
- Focus the game and press Win + Alt + R.
- Check for a recording indicator or timer. Press the same shortcut again to stop.
- Open Game Bar with Win + G and select See my Captures to review the recording.
Microsoft documents Win + Alt + R for starting and stopping recording in full-screen PC games. Recording still depends on the game and capture support; it is not a promise that every game, launcher, or protected video surface can be recorded.

Save recent gameplay with Win + Alt + G
This combination is associated with capturing recent gameplay, but Microsoft’s current Game Bar page and its older Xbox instructions describe its behavior differently. It may depend on the current Game Bar configuration or version. Check Settings > Gaming > Captures and Game Bar’s shortcut settings on your PC rather than assuming it always saves a replay. The older Xbox instructions describe the recent-gameplay function.
Take a game screenshot or hide the timer
- Win + Alt + PrtScn takes a Game Bar screenshot. This combination appears in Microsoft’s older Game Bar instructions; confirm the assigned shortcut in the current overlay if it does not respond.
- Win + Alt + T shows or hides the recording timer in Game Bar. It applies to Game Bar recording and may be remappable or unavailable in some configurations.
Both combinations are documented in Xbox’s Game Bar instructions. Game Bar shortcuts can change or be customized, so use the overlay’s current settings as the authority for your installation.

Switch apps and manage multiple monitors
Move between the game and another app
- Alt + Tab cycles through open apps. It is handy for a chat app, browser guide, or streaming dashboard, but some exclusive-full-screen games minimize or pause when they lose focus. Borderless-windowed mode often makes switching less disruptive, though results depend on the game.
- Win + Tab opens Task View, where you can see windows and virtual desktops. It may be restricted in Xbox full-screen mode.
- Win + D shows or hides the desktop. Treat it as an intentional escape to the desktop because it can hide or minimize the game.
- Win + M minimizes all windows. It is a more direct minimize command, not a safe in-game control.
Move windows and change display mode
- Win + Shift + Left Arrow or Right Arrow moves the active desktop window to the monitor on that side. Use it for a launcher, chat, browser, or windowed game; it is not dependable for an exclusive-full-screen game.
- Win + P opens projection options for PC screen only, Duplicate, Extend, or Second screen only. It can restore a usable arrangement if a game appears on the wrong display.
- Win + K opens the connection interface for supported wireless displays and devices. Wireless display connections can add latency, so they are generally a poor choice for competitive play.
Control audio, microphone, and HDR
- Win + G opens Game Bar; its Audio widget can expose controls for PC, game, microphone, and music audio. The available controls depend on the setup. Xbox’s PC gaming overview describes Game Bar widgets and controller access.
- Win + Alt + K mutes or unmutes the microphone in supported apps. Microsoft does not claim it works in every voice-chat app or game.
- Win + A opens Quick Settings for controls such as volume, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and other available tiles. The tiles vary by Windows build and device.
- Win + Alt + B toggles HDR when the installed Game Bar version supports it. Microsoft specifies version 5.721.7292.0 or newer and recommends updating Game Bar through Microsoft Store if needed.
Take screenshots or screen recordings without Game Bar
- Win + Shift + S opens the Windows snipping interface. Select a region; the image is copied to the clipboard. This is useful for sharing an error message or capturing part of the desktop.
- Win + Shift + R selects a region to record with Snipping Tool. Microsoft says the recording opens in Snipping Tool and is saved by default as an MP4 in the Videos folder’s Screen Recordings subfolder. This suits desktop apps or a region better than low-latency gameplay capture.
- PrtScn captures the whole screen to the clipboard under Microsoft’s current shortcut reference. Windows can also be configured to open screen snipping when you press it.
Use Game Bar for its in-game overlay and gameplay capture, Snipping Tool for selected desktop regions, and a game’s own capture or replay system when you need its specific camera features or capture behavior.

Recover from a black or stuck display
If the screen goes black or appears frozen, Win + Ctrl + Shift + B asks Windows to reset the graphics driver. The display may flicker and the PC may beep; wait a few seconds to see whether the picture returns. Microsoft lists this combination as a way to wake a PC from a blank or black screen. It cannot repair a failed component, loose cable, or complete system lockup, and it does not protect unsaved game progress.

- Wait briefly to see whether the game or display recovers.
- Press Win + Ctrl + Shift + B once.
- If the picture remains unusable, press Win + P and select a workable display mode.
- Check the monitor input, cable, and GPU output connections.
- If the display is still unavailable, restart the game or PC as appropriate.
Use clipboard history and virtual desktops
Keep copied information handy
Press Win + V to open clipboard history. The first time, Windows prompts you to enable it; you can also turn it on at Settings > System > Clipboard. It can help keep copied error codes, server addresses, configuration values, or chat text available after another copy operation.
Separate gaming and desktop workspaces
- Win + Ctrl + D creates a virtual desktop.
- Win + Ctrl + Left Arrow or Right Arrow switches between desktops. Some full-screen games may not transition cleanly.
- Win + Ctrl + F4 closes the current virtual desktop; Windows moves its open windows to another desktop.
These are Windows workspace controls, not game features. Try them with the game you play before relying on them during a session.

Prepare Game Bar before you play
Windows 11 puts gaming controls in its Gaming settings. Microsoft’s Windows Settings guide identifies these settings areas.

- Open Settings > Gaming > Game Bar and check that Game Bar is enabled.
- Open Settings > Gaming > Captures to check capture settings and confirm where clips are saved.
- Open Settings > Gaming > Game Mode if you want to review that setting.
- Update Xbox Game Bar through Microsoft Store, then test the shortcuts on the desktop or in a noncompetitive game.
- Before recording important footage, verify the capture destination and microphone source.
If a shortcut does not work
Game Bar does not open
- Press Win + G on the desktop. If it opens there but not in the game, the game or its display mode may be the issue.
- Check Settings > Gaming > Game Bar and confirm it is enabled.
- Update Game Bar through Microsoft Store.
- Try Win + Alt + R directly, then test the game in borderless or windowed mode as a diagnostic—not a guaranteed fix.
- Check for a Windows-key lock or gaming-mode switch on the keyboard.
- If Game Bar remains unavailable, use the game’s own capture feature or another overlay already installed.
Recording will not start or a shortcut does something unexpected
- Make sure the game is focused and Game Bar capture is enabled; check available storage and the current shortcut assignments.
- Close or reconfigure conflicting overlays or keyboard utilities, including those from Steam, Discord, or GPU software.
- Check the game’s own key bindings and whether it captures low-level keyboard input or limits overlays.
- For Win + Alt + G, inspect the current Game Bar configuration: Microsoft’s published descriptions differ, and the action is not safe to assume.
- Avoid registry edits as a casual fix; they can change system behavior without addressing the cause.
If the game minimizes during Alt + Tab, the shortcut may be working as expected: exclusive-full-screen mode handles focus changes differently from borderless-windowed or windowed mode. The game’s display setting determines the result.
