Hardware vs. Software Video Encoders for Live Streaming: Which Should You Use?

Hardware encoding can free CPU capacity, while software x264 can suit a system with spare processor headroom. The right choice depends on your encoder generation, settings, platform and actual stream test.

For most PC gamers, start with the hardware encoder already supported by your graphics platform: in OBS, it can take encoding work off the CPU and leave more processor capacity for the game. Choose software x264 when your CPU has room and its quality-versus-performance trade-off suits your stream. Neither option guarantees the best-looking picture on every computer: encoder generation, bitrate, settings, content, and system load all matter.

What is the difference between hardware and software encoding?

Hardware encoding

A specialized video-encoding unit performs the encode. It is commonly built into a GPU or graphics platform, rather than being a separate box. OBS exposes hardware encoder families including NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel Quick Sync Video (QSV), and Apple VideoToolbox. You still choose and configure the encoder in software such as OBS; “hardware” describes where the encoding work runs.

Software encoding

A general-purpose processor performs the encode. OBS includes x264 as its software encoder. The CPU must handle that work alongside the game and any other applications running on the computer.

Dedicated encoder appliances

A broadcast appliance is a separate, purpose-built device. It is a different workflow from selecting a GPU’s built-in encoder and is not a prerequisite for a typical single-PC gaming stream.

Which option is better for a gaming stream?

Decision Hardware encoding Software encoding
Where the work runs Specialized video-encoding hardware, commonly within the GPU or graphics platform CPU, using x264 in OBS
Performance trade-off OBS says hardware encoding takes work off the CPU and can have minimal effect on system performance. A game can still compete for GPU resources, so test the actual setup. Uses CPU capacity that could otherwise serve the game and other applications. A capable CPU with sufficient spare capacity can make this a valid option.
Image quality at a fixed bitrate Newer hardware encoders can deliver very good quality. OBS cautions that earlier-generation encoders may look worse than x264 at the same bitrate using x264’s default veryfast preset. Depends on the x264 preset, available CPU time, bitrate, content, and other settings. It is not automatically better.
Compatibility Depends on the specific encoder, GPU or processor, operating system, drivers, OBS version, codec, and destination. Depends on adequate CPU capacity and a supported software-encoder configuration.
Best next step Check which encoder your system offers, then test it with your actual game and stream settings before buying hardware. Check CPU headroom and test at your intended resolution, frame rate, and content before committing.

This is a decision guide, not a controlled head-to-head test of current hardware. The OBS hardware-encoding guide was published on January 11, 2022; use its compatibility notes as a starting point and verify support for your specific device, drivers, operating system, OBS release, and codec.

Check encoder and platform compatibility

OBS documents NVIDIA NVENC and AMD AMF on Windows and Linux, and QSV on Windows and Linux for supported Intel processors with graphics. VideoToolbox is supported on Apple Silicon and Intel Macs. OBS says VideoToolbox streaming on Intel Macs is not supported because it lacks the constant-bitrate support required by most streaming services; for streaming on that configuration, OBS advises using x264. These broad platform notes do not establish that every chip or graphics card supports every codec or feature.

OBS’s compatibility guidance is at OBS Project’s hardware-encoding guide.

Set up an encoder for YouTube Live

YouTube’s current live-encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1. It specifies constant bitrate (CBR), recommends a two-second keyframe interval that must not exceed four seconds, and gives recommended bitrate ranges by codec, resolution, and frame rate. Because the appropriate bitrate depends on those choices, consult YouTube’s table for your intended output rather than applying one number to every stream. These are YouTube recommendations, not universal rules for every platform.

  1. Choose a supported encoder and codec. In OBS, select the hardware encoder available for your device or x264 if you are using software encoding. Confirm that YouTube accepts the codec and that your device and OBS version support the selected combination.
  2. Set the output format. Choose your target resolution and frame rate, then use YouTube’s current bitrate table for that codec and output. Use CBR for the stream.
  3. Set keyframes. Use a two-second keyframe interval, staying at or below YouTube’s four-second maximum.
  4. Match the connection to the stream. YouTube recommends choosing a quality that your upload connection can reliably sustain. Test before a real broadcast and monitor stream health while live.
  5. Compare under representative conditions. Run the game, scenes, overlays, and applications you expect to use. Check both the resulting picture and whether the system can keep the stream stable.

See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance for the current platform table.

What changes for HDR streaming?

YouTube’s live HDR guidance requires HEVC. OBS setup instructions call for a compatible hardware HEVC encoder and Main 10 profile, along with HDR/P010 and a supported HDR color space. HDR is not required for ordinary streaming, and these requirements do not mean every device with a hardware encoder can produce an HDR stream.

YouTube also lists compatible dedicated encoder products for specific HLS HDR workflows, including Cobalt and Telestream Lightspeed Live Stream. Those are specialized examples, not a general recommendation to buy an appliance for single-PC gaming. Check YouTube’s HDR streaming guidance and confirm your full device-and-software chain before attempting HDR.

When should you buy a GPU or a standalone encoder?

First check whether your current system already exposes a suitable hardware encoder. OBS documents built-in hardware paths, so a new graphics card is not automatically necessary just to stream. Consider an upgrade only after confirming your existing encoder cannot meet the codec, output, or performance needs of your stream. For a GPU purchase, verify the exact card’s codec support, OBS and operating-system compatibility, and the destination’s accepted formats; the existence of an encoder family alone is not enough to establish suitability.

A dedicated appliance belongs to a separate, specialized workflow. YouTube’s named appliances relate to particular HLS HDR workflows, not an ordinary OBS setup. A capture card may bring external HDMI video into a computer, but it is not itself the answer to whether encoding should run on the CPU or a GPU encoder.

Test and troubleshoot before relying on the setup

  • The game stutters after enabling x264: the CPU may not have enough spare capacity for both the game and encoding. Test a supported hardware encoder, reduce the stream’s processing demands, or adjust the game workload and retest.
  • The game slows down with hardware encoding: the game and encoder may be competing for GPU resources. Test the actual game and scene load; GPU encoding reduces CPU work but does not guarantee zero system impact.
  • The picture looks worse than expected: check the encoder generation, codec, bitrate, preset, resolution, frame rate, and motion in the content. OBS specifically warns that earlier-generation hardware encoders may produce lower quality than x264 at the same bitrate with its default veryfast preset.
  • The encoder or codec is missing: verify the exact device, operating system, driver, OBS release, and codec support. Do not rely on a broad family name such as NVENC or QSV as proof that a particular feature is available.
  • The stream is unstable or drops frames: test upload reliability at the intended output and monitor YouTube’s stream health. If needed, choose a stream quality and bitrate that the connection can sustain, using YouTube’s current recommendations.
  • You are streaming from an Intel Mac and VideoToolbox is unavailable for streaming: OBS identifies the lack of constant-bitrate support as the limitation; use x264 for streaming on that configuration.
  • You are targeting Twitch: verify current Twitch requirements directly rather than copying YouTube’s codec, bitrate, or keyframe settings.

Or let it run in the cloud
