HDMI 2.2 was released on June 25, 2025, with maximum bandwidth of 96Gbps and support for modes up to 16K at 60Hz. That headline describes what the specification can enable—not what every HDMI 2.2 device, cable, or gaming setup can deliver. For players, the practical question is whether both the source and display support a desired mode and whether the cable is rated for the required bandwidth.
What HDMI 2.2 adds—and what “finalized” means
The HDMI Forum first announced the upcoming Version 2.2 at CES on January 6, 2025. It announced the specification’s release on June 25, 2025, so HDMI 2.2 is released, not merely a proposal awaiting completion. The January announcement and the June release notice establish those dates.
The headline change is next-generation Fixed Rate Link (FRL) technology supporting bandwidth up to 96Gbps. That is a maximum specification capability, not a minimum for every HDMI 2.2 product. HDMI Licensing Administrator describes Ultra96 product tiers of 64Gbps, 80Gbps, or 96Gbps; the precise supported bandwidth and modes depend on the equipment. The official HDMI 2.2 overview describes the specification’s features and bandwidth capabilities.
Does HDMI 2.2 support 16K at 60Hz?
Yes: the HDMI Forum’s release lists support for up to 16K at 60Hz, as well as up to 12K at 120Hz. These are ceilings the specification can support under particular signal formats; they are not a promise that any product carrying an HDMI 2.2 label can output or display them. The Forum’s release also identifies uncompressed full-chroma 8K at 60Hz and 4K at 240Hz at 10-bit or 12-bit color.

Resolution and refresh rate alone do not tell the whole story. The HDMI Forum’s feature overview describes higher modes—including 4K at 480Hz, 5K at 240Hz, 8K at 240Hz, 10K at 120Hz, and 12K at 120Hz—as enabled with compression and chroma subsampling. Do not read the 16K headline as a claim of uncompressed, full-chroma 16K. The published release names uncompressed full-chroma examples separately. The HDMI 2.2 overview and the release’s capability summary distinguish these kinds of modes.
What the bandwidth lift means for gaming
More bandwidth creates room for higher-resolution and higher-refresh-rate signals, but the standard alone does not establish which modes a particular console, graphics card, monitor, or TV supports. A gaming setup needs compatible source and display equipment, and its usable mode is limited by the supported capabilities of the connected chain. HDMI 2.2 is backward compatible with earlier HDMI specification versions; connecting older gear does not give it HDMI 2.2’s new maximum modes. The HDMI 2.2 overview provides the feature context, while HDMI Licensing Administrator’s bandwidth and resolution information sets out the mode distinctions.

The Forum identifies potential uses for the extra bandwidth beyond conventional gaming displays, including AR/VR/MR, spatial-reality and light-field displays, digital signage, medical imaging, and machine vision. Those are application areas the standard may enable, not evidence that 16K gaming displays or content are broadly available. The June 2025 release describes these intended uses.

Latency Indication Protocol
Latency Indication Protocol (LIP) is intended to improve audio/video synchronization, particularly in multi-hop setups where a signal passes through an AV receiver or soundbar. Such chains can make synchronization issues more noticeable. LIP addresses timing across the connected system; it is not a promise of lower gameplay input latency. The HDMI Forum’s feature overview describes its intended role.
