Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Start Helldivers 2 on a lower difficulty, learn a small set of stratagem codes, and treat friendly fire as a constant tactical hazard. A four-player squad succeeds when its loadouts cover different jobs, players communicate dangerous attacks, and everyone knows when to pursue samples or leave for extraction.
What to do before your first drop
- Finish the tutorial. It teaches movement, shooting, objectives and extraction basics.
- Practice stratagem codes aboard the Super Destroyer. Xbox Wire specifically recommends trying codes on your ship before deployment. Enter them until the inputs feel automatic rather than trying to learn them while surrounded.
- Choose a manageable difficulty. Official beginner guidance is to start lower and work upward. A mission you can complete calmly teaches more than a higher-tier failure that leaves no time to explore.
- Keep the first loadout simple. Bring one crowd-control or area tool, one support weapon, one defensive or survival option and a flexible fourth slot. This is a learning pattern, not a permanently best build; useful choices change with patches, factions and mission objectives.
- Agree on basic callouts. Tell the squad before using orbitals, Eagles, sentries or explosives, and call out when you are moving to an objective or extraction.
Friendly fire: the rule that changes every fight
Friendly fire is always enabled. PlayStation describes the game as having “friendly fire is always on” and warns that all munitions can be potentially fatal to fellow Helldivers. Bullets, grenades, mines, sentries and orbital or Eagle attacks do not distinguish between enemies and allies.

Keep firing lanes clear
- Check where teammates are standing before firing automatic weapons or throwing grenades.
- If an ally crosses your sightline, stop shooting, reposition or crouch; trying to finish the burst usually turns a near miss into a team death.
- Do not place mines, sentries or area attacks on the squad’s retreat route, objective terminal or extraction pad.
- Spread out enough that one explosion cannot eliminate everyone, but stay close enough to revive and support one another.
Announce dangerous call-ins
Use voice or text chat for a quick warning such as “orbital on the nest,” “Eagle coming in” or “sentry left.” A short callout gives teammates time to move and prevents an attack from becoming a squad wipe.
How stratagems work
Stratagems are directional-code call-ins. Enter the displayed sequence, throw the beacon and wait for the deployment. The main categories are Eagle, Orbital, Backpack, Support, Defensive and Vehicle options.

| Category | Beginner implication |
|---|---|
| Eagle | Arrives quickly and may offer multiple charges before rearming, making it useful when a threat must be handled immediately. |
| Orbital | Usually takes longer to deploy but can hit hard over an area; announce it and avoid placing it near allies. |
| Support | Provides weapons or tools for large groups, armored enemies or a specific mission problem. |
| Backpack | Adds sustained utility or protection, but may compete with another slot your team needs. |
| Defensive | Creates a safer position or helps hold an objective; placement matters because it can block movement or damage teammates. |
| Vehicle | Offers mobility or firepower, with space and mission fit determining whether it helps more than another support option. |
Build for role coverage, not four versions of the same attack
Before locking in, check whether the squad has answers for crowds, armored targets, sustained support and defense. Also compare cooldown or charge behavior, deployment risk and how well each choice fits the objective. Four players carrying only slow area attacks may struggle when a durable enemy appears; four players carrying only single-target weapons may be overwhelmed by numbers.
Learn a small reliable set first
Use a few codes you can enter under pressure, then add complexity as your muscle memory improves. A familiar tool used safely is more valuable to a beginner than a theoretically stronger option that arrives late or lands on a teammate.
Read the mini-map and choose a route
The mini-map is a tactical instrument, not just a navigation aid. It can reveal primary objectives, enemy nests, tactical objectives, points of interest and sample locations. Check it while moving so the squad does not walk past useful rewards or split accidentally.
A practical mission rhythm
- Identify the primary objective and a route that passes near worthwhile points of interest.
- Clear or bypass threats on the way rather than triggering every patrol you see.
- Search nearby containers, bunkers and pods for requisition slips and other rewards when the risk is reasonable.
- After the primary objective, decide whether side locations and samples justify the remaining time, ammunition and reinforcements.
- Move to extraction before the team is exhausted. The extraction area is a poor place to begin a long detour.
Learning when not to fight is a major beginner skill. A patrol that has not detected you can often be bypassed, preserving health, ammunition and reinforcement capacity for the objective.

Armor, stamina and planet conditions
Armor is a trade-off rather than a simple upgrade path. Light armor improves mobility but offers less protection; heavy armor is more durable but slower; medium armor sits between them. Compare protection, movement speed, stamina regeneration and the armor’s passive ability before choosing.
| Armor choice | Strength | Cost | Good beginner question |
|---|---|---|---|
| Light | Fast movement and recovery | Less protection when caught | Can I avoid contact and reposition reliably? |
| Medium | Balanced mobility and protection | No extreme advantage | Do I want a forgiving general-purpose option? |
| Heavy | More durability | Slower movement and stamina use | Will this mission reward holding ground more than traveling? |
Planetary environmental conditions can change how those trade-offs feel. A passive that supports the mission’s hazards or your squad’s plan may be more useful than a small difference in raw protection. There is no universally correct beginner armor.

Samples
Samples are found at plants and sample nodes. Common, Rare and Super Samples are associated with different mission difficulties. Collect them when they are near your route, but do not repeatedly endanger the whole squad for one distant node.
Requisition Slips
Requisition Slips found in containers, bunkers and pods pay for additional stratagems. Check points of interest as you travel instead of treating every reward as a reason to abandon the primary objective.

Medals and Warbonds
Warbonds are tiered catalogs. Missions, Personal Orders and Major Orders provide Medals; premium Warbonds require Super Credits. Once a Warbond is unlocked, it does not expire, and Medals can be allocated across multiple active Warbonds.
That system removes the need to spend immediately. Compare the pages and save toward a weapon, armor passive or grenade that solves a real team problem. Do not buy randomly just because a new page is available.
Choosing a beginner difficulty
Use the lowest level that still lets you complete objectives while learning movement, codes and map awareness. Increase difficulty after you can consistently finish missions, avoid unnecessary patrol fights, revive teammates safely and extract with useful resources.
Move up when these skills are routine
- You can enter your main stratagem codes without stopping to read every direction.
- You recognize when an attack will endanger the squad and place it away from allies.
- You can locate the primary objective and return to extraction without getting lost.
- Your squad can handle ordinary patrols without spending every reinforcement.
Higher difficulty should add pressure, not replace the fundamentals. If a new level causes repeated friendly-fire deaths or leaves the team unable to answer armored enemies, adjust the loadout or drop back temporarily.
A first-drop checklist
- Complete the tutorial.
- Practice several stratagem codes on the Super Destroyer.
- Select a lower, manageable difficulty.
- Bring complementary roles instead of duplicating every weapon.
- Check teammate positions before shooting or throwing.
- Announce orbitals, Eagles, mines, sentries and explosives.
- Use the mini-map to route through objectives and nearby points of interest.
- Collect sensible samples and requisition slips without sacrificing the mission.
- Choose armor by mobility, protection, passive and environmental conditions.
- Spend Medals deliberately; remember that unlocked Warbonds do not expire.
- Leave enough time and reinforcements for extraction.
