In Helldivers 2, Common samples appear at every difficulty, Rare samples start at Challenging (4), and Super samples start at Extreme (6), according to the current community-maintained sample reference. Older guides that put Super samples at difficulty 7 or higher are out of date. Search objectives and points of interest for the first two tiers; on eligible missions, find the marked sample-site point of interest for Supers.
Sample types and their difficulty gates
Samples are used to upgrade your ship through the Ship Management terminal, according to Arrowhead Game Studios’ player-support page. The precise difficulty gates below come from the community-maintained sample reference, not an official Arrowhead difficulty table.

Arrowhead confirms the broader pattern that harder difficulties contain more Rare samples. The difficulty thresholds in the table reflect the current community reference; they are not an official support-page specification.
Where to find Common samples
Common samples can spawn at every difficulty, so you do not need to raise mission difficulty to collect them. Search the area around main and side objectives, points of interest, extraction zones, nests, and fabricators. They are broadly distributed, making a sweep of nearby terrain more useful than concentrating on a single landmark.

Where to find Rare samples
Choose Challenging (4) or higher, then make time to explore. Check points of interest, objective areas, and enemy installations; Rare samples reward deliberate searching more than a direct run from objective to objective. Higher difficulties contain more Rare samples, but the amount you find still depends on the mission and map.
How to locate Super samples
On Extreme (6) or higher, look for the sample-site point of interest. A February 2024 PC Gamer guide describes a distinctive standing, fist-shaped rock with silver-colored veins and samples around its base. Treat that appearance as a useful clue rather than a guarantee: the guide is older, and terrain or markers can change.

If the mission includes a radar-station sub-objective, completing it can reveal points of interest on the map and help you find the sample site. Check map markers and the terrain as you approach rather than assuming the landmark will be visible from a distance.

When a radar-station sub-objective is available, prioritize it if you want help locating points of interest. Once locations are revealed, investigate them instead of spending time combing terrain at random. This can help with Common and Rare samples as well as the Super sample site, but it does not guarantee that every point of interest contains samples.

Why sample totals vary by mission
Do not expect a fixed haul from every run. The community reference’s sample totals apply to Expedition and other non-Defense missions; it notes different conditions for Eradication missions and says map architecture and non-SEAF structures affect totals. It also identifies Cleanse Infested District as an exception with additional Common samples per primary objective. These are community-reference estimates, not guaranteed yields or official rates.
Extract to keep samples for progression
Samples support ship upgrades, so plan to finish the mission and extract with the squad rather than treating collection as complete when you pick them up. A 2024 PC Gamer guide reports that samples are shared across the squad and that dropped sample cases are marked on the map. Because that handling guidance is older, check the current in-game behavior if a case is lost or the interface changes.
Do not follow the old difficulty-7 Super threshold
Some early guides place Super samples only at difficulties 7–9. That advice predates a change recorded in the current community reference: patch 1.000.400, dated June 13, 2024, made Super samples spawn at difficulty 6. A 2026 Steam community guide still gives the older difficulty-7 threshold, so it conflicts with the updated reference. Use Extreme (6) as the current starting point, not 7.
