The Helldivers 2 cape inspired by the 2024 negative-review backlash is called Pillars of Freedom. Arrowhead released it as a commemorative in-game cosmetic on June 27, 2025, awarding it to existing players; it is not a newly announced 2026 item or a physical cape for sale.
What does the Pillars of Freedom cape commemorate?
In May 2024, Sony proposed requiring Steam players to link a PlayStation Network account to Helldivers 2. The plan applied to new players and was scheduled to begin affecting existing players on May 30. Players reacted with a wave of negative Steam reviews. Sony then said the planned account-linking update “will not be moving forward.” The statement is reproduced in a Steam Community discussion post.
During the backlash, Arrowhead CEO Johan Pilestedt engaged with a community suggestion to turn the game’s Steam review graph into a cape design. PC Gamer described an early teaser as a dark cape with two red bars, representing what it reported as more than 200,000 negative reviews at the time. That number refers to the historical campaign, not today’s Steam review total.
When was the cape released?
Arrowhead released Pillars of Freedom on June 27, 2025. PC Gamer reported that it was awarded to existing players and distributed through the armories aboard their Super Destroyers after rollout. The Helldivers account’s announcement, as quoted by PC Gamer’s June 27, 2025 report, said: “In honor of their unquestioning commitment to the defense of Managed Democracy, the Helldivers have been awarded a commemorative cape.”

If it is not there, the cited reporting does not establish a current recovery method or guarantee that every account received it.
