You can start livestreaming with a webcam, a phone, or a computer running streaming software; you do not need to buy a full production kit first. Choose the route that fits what you stream, then add equipment or software only when it solves a specific problem such as unclear audio, limited computer performance, or repetitive production controls.
How do I start streaming?
YouTube documents three routes: stream with a webcam, a mobile device, or an encoder. An encoder may be software on your computer or a hardware device. Start with the device you already have and the simplest route that supports your format; a gameplay broadcast with overlays needs a different setup from a phone stream or a direct webcam broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance for its current route-specific steps.
Webcam or mobile device
A webcam or phone can be enough when you want a direct camera view and do not need a complex scene layout. A webcam is optional, not a universal requirement: gameplay, music, or other formats may not need a camera view at all.
Computer and encoder
For gameplay or a more controlled production, an encoder can capture the game and other sources, arrange them into scenes, and send the broadcast to a platform. YouTube identifies both software and hardware encoders as options. The software route uses the computer’s resources; a hardware encoder is a separate possible route, but the available guidance does not establish a model recommendation or a universal reason to buy one.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Which streaming software should I use?
Pick software for the platform and workflow you actually need, rather than starting with paid features. Streamlabs’ setup documentation explains how to connect an account, add a webcam, and capture gameplay. Its broader creator-tools overview describes Streamlabs Desktop as software for streaming to Twitch, YouTube Live, and TikTok. Start with its setup guidance if you choose that route. OBS Project maintains its own help and knowledge base for people using OBS; consult the OBS knowledge base for its documentation.
Streamlabs says simultaneous multistreaming to Twitch, YouTube, and Kick requires Streamlabs Ultra in its Twitch guide, last updated September 22, 2026. That is the vendor’s feature statement, not an independent comparison or a price quote; verify the current subscription terms and platform rules before choosing a plan.

What equipment do I need to stream?
There is no universal minimum shopping list beyond a suitable device and a way to send your broadcast. Choose equipment according to the part of the stream you want to improve.
| Equipment | Useful when | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Microphone | Your voice or other live audio needs clearer capture. | Streamlabs includes microphones in its equipment guidance, but the available sources do not establish a best model. Choose for your space, connection, and audio workflow rather than assuming a particular product is required. |
| Webcam | You want viewers to see you while you play or present. | Optional for formats that do not need a camera view. YouTube lists webcam streaming as one route. |
| Hardware encoder | You have a reason to encode outside the streaming computer. | YouTube recognizes hardware encoders as an option, but the available sources do not identify a model or establish that one is necessary for a typical creator. |
| Elgato Stream Deck | You want programmable controls or shortcuts for production actions. | YouTube describes it as a programmable USB controller with plugins and shortcuts. It is a workflow convenience, not a streaming essential. |
Before buying anything, identify the actual bottleneck: audio quality, lack of a camera angle, computer load, or the time it takes to trigger production actions. The available guidance does not provide an independent model-by-model product ranking.

What settings should I use to stream on Twitch?
Set output quality to what your computer and connection can sustain. Settings that exceed your hardware’s capacity can cause performance problems, and requirements vary with the content, other programs running, and the computer itself.
Resolution and encoding
Streamlabs’ Twitch guidance presents 1280×720 as a beginner-oriented balance between quality and performance and notes that 1080p can use significantly more resources. Treat this as Streamlabs guidance, not a universal Twitch rule or a guarantee that a particular computer can handle the setting. The same guide distinguishes x264, which uses the CPU, from NVENC, which uses a dedicated GPU encoder. Choose the encoder path your system can handle while running your game and other production tools.

Connection capacity
Streamlabs’ system-requirements page, updated April 8, 2026, gives 3.6 Mbps or better as a reference for 720p at 30 fps on most platforms. It is vendor guidance, not a guarantee for a particular platform, stream, or connection. A connection’s available upload capacity and stability matter alongside resolution and frame rate; leave room for other network use rather than treating the figure as a promise of reliable output.
Computer requirements
Streamlabs’ quick-start guide, dated May 20, 2026, gives example minimum and recommended specifications for that software, including operating system, memory, processor, graphics, and storage. Those are Streamlabs Desktop requirements, not universal streaming requirements and not requirements for OBS. OBS Project’s system-requirements page is older compatibility guidance, dated August 25, 2021; check the relevant software’s own documentation for the setup you plan to use.

When does a cloud service make sense for a 24/7 YouTube stream?
If you want a pre-recorded video or playlist to keep streaming on YouTube continuously, a computer-based encoder is not the only option. StreamNeo is a cloud service from Yorker Media: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams to YouTube only and does not broadcast from a camera.
Each slot includes one always-on stream, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, support from the StreamNeo team, and 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots. Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K at 60 fps, with no re-encode and no quality tiers; every plan includes the same product and only billing length changes.
StreamNeo offers a first free day per account with no card required. After that, choose a day, week, month, six months, or year; cancel any time. UPI and cards are available in India, and card checkout is available worldwide. For five or more slots, contact support.
Or let it run in the cloud
- Upload your video or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the upload from the cloud.
Nothing has to stay on at home. Your upload streams at its original quality up to 4K 60 fps for one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.

Quick Recap
What should I check before going live?
- Match your route to the format: webcam, mobile, or encoder.
- Confirm the selected software supports the platform and production features you need.
- Choose output settings your computer and upload connection can sustain; lower settings if performance is unstable.
- Check that your microphone, camera, game capture, or other sources are included only if the format calls for them.
- Make sure the material you broadcast is yours to use and follows the platform’s copyright rules. YouTube’s live-streaming help is the appropriate starting point for YouTube-specific requirements.
