For most people buying a traditional home console in 2023, choose the PlayStation 5. It combined excellent first-party games, fast SSD loading, strong 4K-class performance and an unusually capable controller. Choose Xbox Series X instead if Game Pass, backward compatibility and cross-device play matter most; choose Nintendo Switch OLED for Nintendo exclusives, handheld gaming and family play; and choose Xbox Series S when the lowest new-generation entry cost matters more than resolution, discs or storage.
There was no objective winner. The right purchase depended more on your games, friends, display, subscriptions and ownership preferences than on teraflops.

Exact 2023 prices varied by country, date, edition and bundle, and the available evidence does not establish one reliable price table. Compare the complete package—console, games, online service, storage and controllers—rather than a headline MSRP.

Why it wins the default recommendation
The PS5 was the safest all-round choice for a buyer seeking a powerful living-room console. Sony’s first-party catalogue, including major single-player franchises, gave it a clear software identity, while virtually all major third-party releases were available. Contemporary coverage highlighted its fast SSD loading and strong 4K-focused presentation (TechAdvisor).

The DualSense controller’s adaptive triggers and haptic feedback can make supported games feel distinct. The console supports up to 120Hz in compatible games and displays; that does not mean every title renders at native 4K and 120 frames per second. Developers choose different combinations of resolution, ray tracing and performance modes.
Disc, Digital and late-2023 Slim models
The original PS5 came as a Disc Edition or Digital Edition. The disc model plays physical PS5 and PS4 games and 4K Blu-ray movies, and it lets you borrow, resell or buy used games. The Digital Edition is quieter and initially cheaper in some markets, but removes those options.
A slimmer PS5 revision began replacing the original chassis in late 2023. Treat it as a late-year model, not the version sold throughout 2023; check the exact model, detachable-drive configuration and dated bundle price before buying.

- First-party releases generally launched at premium prices.
- The original internal SSD was limited, and a compatible M.2 expansion drive could be costly (TechAdvisor).
- Backward compatibility was primarily with PS4 rather than the entire PlayStation catalogue.
- PlayStation Plus offered useful tiers, but its catalogue model was less straightforward than Game Pass for readers seeking a large rotating library.
Best value for frequent players: Xbox Series X
Hardware that matches the premium class
Microsoft lists an eight-core Zen 2 CPU, RDNA 2 graphics rated at 12 teraflops, 16GB of GDDR6 memory, a 1TB custom NVMe SSD, support for up to 120fps and a 4K UHD Blu-ray drive on the disc model (Xbox specifications). In practice, it is a close technical counterpart to PS5, so the ecosystem is more important than small specification differences.

Why Game Pass changes the calculation
Game Pass can be excellent value for someone who plays regularly, wants a changing catalogue and values day-one access to selected first-party releases. Quick Resume, Smart Delivery and cross-save features make moving among supported games and devices convenient. Xbox also has the broadest official backward-compatibility programme among these consoles, covering thousands of selected Xbox One, Xbox 360 and original Xbox games—not every historical title (Xbox specifications).
Do not assume it is automatically cheaper. If you play only two or three games a year, prefer permanent ownership, or already have a gaming PC that runs the desired Xbox titles, the subscription and hardware may add little value. Some 2023 comparisons nevertheless selected Series X as the best-value or best overall console because of this ecosystem (Creative Bloq).
Physical media and limits
The disc drive supports used games and 4K Blu-ray. Large modern games can fill the 1TB SSD quickly, while proprietary expansion cards cost more than ordinary external drives. External USB storage is useful for archiving or, where supported, older titles, but it does not replace the internal SSD for every optimized current-generation game.
Best budget option: Xbox Series S
Series S provides access to the same broad Xbox ecosystem in a smaller, lower-cost box. It suits a 1080p or 1440p television, a child’s room, a secondary screen or a casual player.

- Lower GPU performance and less memory can mean reduced resolution, visual settings or frame-rate stability.
- The original model’s smaller internal storage can make expansion a significant part of the real cost.
Buy it because those compromises fit your use, not simply because it is labelled “next generation.”
Best for Nintendo and handheld gaming: Switch OLED
What the OLED model adds
Switch OLED supports handheld, tabletop and docked-TV play, Nintendo’s first-party catalogue and easy local multiplayer. Its OLED screen improves contrast and colour in handheld mode; the revised kickstand, dock features and additional internal storage improve the hardware experience.
It does not materially increase processing power or docked output. It has no 4K output and is far behind PS5 and Xbox Series X in graphics performance. Third-party ports can have lower resolution or performance, and Nintendo games often hold their prices. TechAdvisor found the OLED model most compelling for new buyers or owners of older Switch hardware, while owners of the newer battery-revised standard Switch had less reason to upgrade (TechAdvisor). Nintendo also had a particularly strong 2023 software year (Digital Trends).

When a PC is the better purchase
A PC is worth considering for Steam and other storefronts, mods, upgrades, keyboard-and-mouse play, strategy and simulation games, and access to Xbox first-party releases without Xbox hardware. It usually costs more for comparable performance, requires more setup and troubleshooting, and cannot substitute for Nintendo’s exclusive catalogue. First console or parent buying a gift
Choose Switch OLED for approachable games, portability and local multiplayer. Choose Series S for a lower-cost digital Xbox setup, provided the child does not need discs. Choose PS5 or Series X when a 4K television, demanding games or a long-term enthusiast purchase is expected.
You already own a PS4 or Xbox One
Stay with the same platform when your digital library, friends and accessories matter. A PS4 owner gets the clearest generational software path from PS5; an Xbox One owner benefits from backward compatibility, Smart Delivery and shared Xbox services on Series X or S.
You travel frequently
Switch OLED is the only choice here with a full handheld mode. Home consoles can be remote-play devices, but they are not portable replacements.

You collect or borrow games
Buy a disc-equipped PS5 or Xbox Series X. Digital-only hardware removes used-game, lending and resale options.
You mainly play online with friends
The platform your friends use is usually decisive. Cross-play is common but not universal, so verify the specific game rather than assuming every multiplayer title connects across consoles.
Check these details before paying
- Confirm your TV or monitor resolution and refresh rate. A 4K/120Hz display helps PS5 and Series X, but supported modes vary by game.
- Decide whether you need discs, 4K Blu-ray, used games or resale.
- List the exact exclusive games you want and check their platform.
- Price two or three years of subscriptions, games, storage and controllers—not just the console.
- Check friends’ platforms, parental-control needs, console dimensions and bundle contents.
- For expansion, use the platform-approved SSD or card; cheap USB storage cannot perform every current-generation role.
- Verify regional warranty, retailer return terms and the date of any advertised price or promotion.
How to think about total cost
Use this framework rather than a universal total:
Three-year ownership cost = console + subscriptions + games not included in a service + storage expansion + accessories.
