The allowance depends on the Cloud product family and datacenter region; Hetzner counts outgoing traffic, while incoming and internal traffic are free. If a continuous YouTube stream exceeds the included allowance, excess traffic is billed in 100 MB increments, with partial increments rounded up. Estimate your stream’s outgoing data from its actual bitrate and runtime, then compare it with the allowance for your specific plan and location.
What Hetzner Cloud counts as traffic
Hetzner’s Cloud billing FAQ says it bills outgoing traffic; incoming and internal traffic are free. Outgoing traffic from a Cloud server counts toward its allowance. Some traffic between Cloud zones sent over public IPs can count as outgoing, so communication between two Hetzner Cloud servers is not automatically free. See Hetzner’s Cloud billing FAQ.
For a server sending a live feed to YouTube, estimate the server’s outbound stream. Do not add YouTube viewers’ playback traffic to that estimate merely because your server supplies the ingest feed: YouTube distributes the stream to viewers. The topology of any third-party relay in your setup may differ, so account for its actual traffic separately.
How much traffic is included?
The allowance is based on product family and datacenter location. Hetzner’s traffic overview, last changed May 21, 2024, lists 20 TB for EU CX, CPX, and CAX Cloud servers. CX and CPX allowances in the US range from 1–5 TB, and in Singapore from 0.5–5 TB; CCX allowances vary by plan and location. Check the current allowance for your exact product and datacenter in Hetzner’s traffic overview rather than assuming that all Cloud servers include 20 TB.

How to estimate a continuous stream’s monthly data
Use the total outgoing audio and video bitrate and the number of hours streamed. A convenient decimal estimate is:
Monthly GB ≈ total Mbps × streaming hours × 0.45

This is a calculation from bitrate and duration, not a Hetzner-published usage statistic. It assumes a sustained bitrate; leave additional room for protocol overhead, reconnects, bitrate variation, and other server egress.
Examples for a full 30-day month
A 30-day month contains 720 hours. At a constant bitrate, 1 Mbps sends about 324 GB in that time; 10 Mbps sends about 3,240 GB, or 3.24 decimal TB.

YouTube’s current live encoder settings table recommends 12 Mbps for 1080p60 using AV1 or H.265, and 17 Mbps for 1080p60 using H.264. If either bitrate were sustained for all 720 hours, the corresponding estimates would be about 3.89 TB and 5.51 TB respectively, before overhead and other egress. These are estimates, not guaranteed consumption. The applicable settings depend on the codec and stream; see YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
Apply the estimate to your server
- Find the actual combined audio and video bitrate configured in your encoder or streaming workflow.
- Multiply that bitrate in Mbps by the planned streaming hours, then by 0.45 to estimate decimal GB.
- Compare the estimate with the included allowance for your exact Hetzner Cloud family and datacenter.
- Allow for overhead and other outgoing services, then check your account’s traffic usage during the month.
What happens when you exceed the allowance?
Hetzner measures Cloud traffic by calendar month. Overage is billed in 100 MB increments, with a partial increment rounded up. Usage notifications at 75% and 100% are alerts, not caps: they do not throttle or stop the server’s traffic. The rate can depend on location and current terms, so check Hetzner’s live plan and pricing information for your likely overage cost; the published traffic information establishes the increment but not a reader-specific final charge.

Traffic allowance is not stream reliability
A monthly quota tells you how much outgoing data is included, not whether your server can sustain a particular upload rate or deliver a stable ingest connection. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom over the stream’s bitrate for available upload bandwidth. Its guidance also covers RTMPS, encoder testing, and monitoring stream health; these steps help with delivery reliability but do not change your Hetzner traffic allowance. See YouTube’s streaming tips and encoder settings guidance.
Evaluate a setup on two separate questions: whether its likely monthly egress fits the allowance and whether its connection can reliably send the chosen stream. A large allowance does not establish sustained throughput or uptime, and bitrate alone does not identify your plan’s allowance.
