Hetzner lists 20 TB/month for EU CX, CPX, and CAX Cloud Servers, while OVHcloud Public Cloud includes outbound traffic in most locations but has a 1 TB/month project quota in Singapore, Sydney, and Mumbai. OVHcloud VPS is a separate product with different terms. None of those allowances by itself guarantees an uninterrupted stream.

Start by deciding what the server will do
Relaying an encoded feed
A relay forwards one already-encoded video feed to YouTube. In this setup, the server’s outbound traffic is principally determined by the feed’s bitrate and the time it remains online. Do not multiply the server’s YouTube-bound traffic by your viewer count: YouTube transcodes an ingested live stream into output formats for viewers, so the server sends its feed to YouTube rather than separately serving each viewer. That assumption stops applying if your server also serves viewers or other destinations. This is an inference from the single-ingest setup and YouTube’s description, not a provider performance test. Encoding or transcoding on the server
If the server must encode or transcode video, outbound allowance is only one part of the decision. You must also verify CPU or GPU capacity and test whether the selected instance can sustain the workload. The provider terms cited here do not benchmark either Hetzner or OVHcloud for live encoding.

OVHcloud’s US Public Cloud pricing page says IPv4 is no longer included beginning October 1, 2026, and is billed separately. Treat that as a current pricing-page claim and check the chosen region and instance before ordering.

Estimate monthly traffic from bitrate
For a constant bitrate, estimate decimal terabytes with this formula:
Mbps × seconds online ÷ 8 = bytes transferred
At 6 Mbps for 30 days, the stream is online for 2,592,000 seconds and transfers about 1.944 trillion bits, or 1.944 decimal TB, before protocol overhead: 6,000,000 bits/second × 2,592,000 seconds ÷ 8. This is an illustrative calculation, not a forecast of billed usage. Allow extra capacity for protocol overhead, reconnects, updates, and any other server workloads.

YouTube recommends 6 Mbps for 720p at 30 or 60 fps using AV1 or H.265, and 8 Mbps for H.264 at those frame rates. Those are YouTube recommendations, not provider guarantees; actual settings depend on codec, resolution, frame rate, content, and the reliability of the upload path. Configure and test the YouTube ingest path
- Choose a reliable quality. Select a bitrate and output quality the server’s available connection can sustain continuously. YouTube says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.”
- Use YouTube’s supported encoder settings. YouTube’s live guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; recommends CBR encoding; and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. These are YouTube platform instructions, not evidence that either host provides an encoder or guarantees ingest quality.
- Use secure ingest. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Configure the relay or encoder with the ingest endpoint and stream key shown in YouTube Studio. Treat the stream key as a password: do not publish it, commit it to a public repository, or include it in logs you share.
- Test before relying on it. Run a representative test with the same resolution, bitrate, audio, and motion as the intended stream. Check YouTube’s stream health and the server’s network and process state; monitor again after going live.
Choose a provider without assuming a winner
- Pick the product family first. Compare Hetzner Cloud with OVHcloud Public Cloud, or compare VPS plans separately. Do not mix VPS or dedicated-server terms into a Public Cloud comparison.
- Pin down the region and plan. Record the included monthly outbound allowance, public bandwidth, and any regional quota or billing qualification for the exact instance you plan to buy.
- Calculate expected use. Multiply configured bitrate by planned stream hours, convert bits to bytes, and leave headroom for overhead and other traffic.
- Test the complete path. Check sustained upload speed to YouTube’s ingest, stream health, and reconnect behavior from the chosen server. A plan’s allowance is not a test of sustained throughput.
- Plan for recovery. Set up external monitoring and automatic restart or reconnect behavior, and decide how you will restore service if the instance, process, network, or ingest session fails.
- If encoding, test compute separately. Measure CPU or GPU headroom under the actual workload instead of treating a relay traffic allowance as proof that the instance can encode.
The cited provider pages establish traffic terms, not a controlled Hetzner-versus-OVHcloud test for a 24/7 YouTube workload. There is no evidence here to declare one the uptime or stream-quality winner.

Common failure points and fixes
- Traffic allowance is being confused with bandwidth. An included monthly quota describes how much outbound data is covered; it does not establish the sustained transfer rate. Check both the exact plan’s allowance and its public bandwidth.
- The estimate is far below actual usage. Recheck the configured bitrate, online hours, and other workloads, then add room for protocol overhead and reconnects. For OVHcloud Public Cloud in Singapore, Sydney, or Mumbai, remember the quota is per project and datacentre and unused quota does not roll over.
- The ingest is unstable despite adequate quota. Run a sustained test to YouTube, lower the bitrate or output quality to a rate the connection can reliably sustain, and inspect YouTube stream health.
- YouTube rejects or flags the stream. Verify the endpoint, stream key, supported codec and encoder settings, and that the stream is configured as intended in YouTube Studio. For content rights and eligibility, consult YouTube’s rules directly; hosting capacity does not grant permission to rebroadcast copyrighted material or guarantee monetization. Avoid assuming that repeatedly looping content is acceptable under YouTube’s policies.
- A process or connection stops and stays down. Configure process supervision and reconnect behavior, monitor from outside the server, and test recovery before depending on the stream.
- OVHcloud VPS traffic appears “unlimited,” but a regional plan slows. Check the Asia-Pacific quota qualification on the specific VPS offer; OVHcloud’s reseller page says bandwidth is capped at 10 Mbps after that quota.
