hh_helphome.dll is a legacy Hewlett-Packard application DLL, not a normal Windows system file. If Windows reports that hh_helphome.dll is missing, the safest fix is to repair or reinstall the old HP printer, scanner, or help software that originally installed it.
Do not download a random copy and place it in System32. That can introduce malware, provide the wrong architecture, and leave the damaged HP installation untouched.
What hh_helphome.dll belongs to
Available installation records associate hh_helphome.dll with HP Digital Imaging software. One recorded path is:
C:Program FilesHPDigital ImagingbinLagerHh_Helphome.dll
The file also appears in the installed-file inventory for HP PSC 1310 Series Help, whose help files were installed under the HP Digital Imaging directory.

The filename alone cannot identify the exact HP product on your computer. Several older HP printer and scanner packages used related Digital Imaging components, so match the repair package to the actual model and application that produced the error.

What the error means
You may see messages such as:
Hh_Helphome.dll not foundThe file Hh_Helphome.dll is missingCannot find Hh_Helphome.dllThis application failed to start because Hh_Helphome.dll was not foundCannot register Hh_Helphome.dll
These are commonly indexed error variants, not a documented HP error list. In practical terms, Windows tried to start an HP program and could not load one of the files it expects.
The usual causes are:
- The HP installation is damaged or incomplete.
- HP Help or Digital Imaging was removed separately from the main printer software.
- An uninstall left behind a shortcut, startup entry, or scheduled task.
- Antivirus software quarantined the file.
- A recent update or system change damaged the application or its installer cache.
- A broader Windows problem is affecting several unrelated programs.
Start by identifying the caller instead of treating the DLL as an independent download.

1. Identify the HP program that is failing
Read the complete error window and note the application name. The title bar may identify HP Help, an imaging utility, or a printer/scanner program.
Then check the shortcut:
- Right-click the shortcut that produces the error.
- Select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, read Target and Start in.
- Note the executable name and its folder.
- Select Open File Location if that button is available.
Next, search installed programs:
- Press
Windowsand type Control Panel. - Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs and then Programs and Features.
- Look for entries containing HP Digital Imaging, HP PSC Help, HP Photosmart, HP Deskjet, HP Officejet, or the exact printer or scanner model.
- Record the full product name before changing anything.
If a copy of the DLL still exists, inspect its path:
- Open File Explorer.
- Search the drive where the HP software was installed for
hh_helphome.dll. - Right-click any result and select Open file location.
- Treat an HP Digital Imaging directory as useful provenance.
- Treat a copy in a temporary folder, download folder, or unrelated user-profile directory as suspicious until scanned.
Do not assume that a file in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 is correct. Those folders have different purposes, and the HP installer determines where its application files belong. An old HP package may be 32-bit even when Windows is 64-bit.

2. Repair or reinstall the exact HP package
This is the most likely successful fix.
Visit HP’s official support portal, search for the exact printer or scanner model, and select the installed Windows version before downloading anything. HP support varies by operating system. An old model may have no current package, or HP may offer only a basic Windows driver rather than the original help and Digital Imaging utilities.
If the HP entry offers a repair option:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Select the relevant HP program.
- Choose Repair or Change, if available.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the same HP application that produced the error.
If repair is unavailable, reinstall the complete package:
- In Programs and Features, select the affected HP software.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart the computer when prompted.
- Install the matching package from HP’s official product support page.
- Use Run as administrator if the installer fails to write its files.
- Restart Windows again.
- Test the HP application.
A successful repair normally makes the original HP program open without the missing-file message. If the printer still works but only an obsolete help utility fails, uninstalling the orphaned HP Help or Digital Imaging entry may be cleaner than rebuilding software you no longer use.
Microsoft documents the standard Windows removal process in its uninstall and remove programs guidance.
If HP no longer provides a compatible package for your version of Windows, do not substitute a DLL from another computer. Use the built-in Windows printer support if it meets your needs, or remove the obsolete HP utility and its stale startup entry.
3. Check Windows Security quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine an old application file, particularly when the installation is outdated.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
hh_helphome.dllor the HP application directory. - Read the detection details and original file path.
- If the file was identified as a threat, leave it quarantined and remove the HP software.
- If it was quarantined as a suspected false positive, verify that the original path belongs to the matching HP installation before considering restoration.
- Run a scan after any restoration and reinstall the complete HP package if possible.
Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined threat can cause it to be detected again. Do not restore a file merely because its name matches the error.

4. Remove an orphaned HP startup entry
If the HP application was already uninstalled, the error may come from a stale shortcut or startup task rather than an active installation.
Check startup programs:
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Select Startup apps.
- Look for an HP entry pointing to a missing executable.
- Right-click it and select Disable.
- Restart Windows and test again.
Also check Task Scheduler:
- Open Start and search for Task Scheduler.
- Open Task Scheduler Library.
- Look for tasks clearly belonging to the removed HP product.
- Confirm the action points to an obsolete HP path.
- Disable the task rather than deleting it immediately.
- Restart and verify that the error has stopped.
If you still need the printer or scanner, reinstall the complete matching HP package instead of disabling its components individually.
5. Update or reinstall the HP device driver
A printer driver alone may not restore hh_helphome.dll, because this file is associated with HP application and help components. Still, a driver problem is relevant if Device Manager shows a separate hardware error.
Check Windows first:
- Right-click Start and select Settings.
- Open Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install applicable device or optional driver updates.
- Restart Windows.
Then inspect Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, Imaging devices, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for a yellow warning icon beside the HP device.
- Right-click the device and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- If the device remains broken, use the exact driver package supplied for the model and Windows version by HP.
Outbyte Driver Updater can show which drivers are outdated through its free scan; the repair or driver installation is completed by the full version. It does not replace the exact HP application package when hh_helphome.dll belongs to that package.
If Device Manager shows no problem and only the HP help application fails, continue with the HP software repair rather than repeatedly replacing the printer driver.
6. Repair Windows components only when other programs are affected
SFC and DISM are for protected Windows files and the Windows component store. They are unlikely to restore an HP-only DLL that was never part of Windows.

Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the guesswork by showing what its free scan finds; repair is completed by the full version. For this file, however, reinstalling the affected HP program remains the definitive fix when the scan points to an application-only problem.
If DISM and SFC report repairs but hh_helphome.dll is still missing, return to the HP installer. Do not keep repeating Windows repair commands for an application file.

- Choose a restore point from before the failure.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore point.

Do not download the DLL from a random website
A downloaded DLL may contain malware, belong to a different HP product, use the wrong architecture, or depend on other missing files. Copying it into System32 or SysWOW64 can also create conflicts and does not repair the installer, shortcuts, registry entries, or neighboring HP components.
The safe sources are the original HP installation media, the exact HP package for the model and supported Windows version, or a verified backup from the same installation. If manual copying is unavoidable, use only a known-good matching file and place it in the application’s own directory, never a Windows folder.

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. There is no reliable evidence that hh_helphome.dll is a self-registering COM or ActiveX server.
Only use registration commands if HP specifically instructs you to do so for the exact package. Otherwise, this command is not the normal repair:

Do not enable random Windows Features
hh_helphome.dll is not established as a Windows optional feature. Opening Control Panel → Programs → Turn Windows features on or off and enabling unrelated legacy components is unlikely to restore it. Use Windows Features only when the error specifically identifies a Windows feature or a documented application dependency.

FAQ
Is hh_helphome.dll part of Windows?
The available path evidence points to legacy HP Digital Imaging and HP PSC help software, not a normal Windows system DLL.
Which HP product installed it?
HP PSC 1310 Series Help is one documented association. Related HP printer and scanner packages may contain similar Digital Imaging components, so the filename alone cannot identify the exact parent product.
Should I copy it to System32?
No. Repair or reinstall the HP application that requests it. Do not infer a correct location from the error message.
Will SFC restore it?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows system files, while this appears to be an HP application file.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Is a printer driver reinstall enough?
Not necessarily. The driver and the HP help or Digital Imaging application are separate parts of an older package. Reinstall the complete matching HP software when possible.
What if HP no longer offers the old software?
Use the current HP support page for the exact model and operating system. If the legacy utility is unsupported, remove the orphaned component and use Windows’ built-in printer support where it provides the functions you need.
