High FPS vs. Low FPS: What Difference Does It Make?

Higher FPS can make games smoother and more responsive, but the best target depends on your display, frame consistency, game, and performance budget.

Higher FPS is usually better for smoothness and responsiveness in games—but only when your system can deliver frames consistently and your display can refresh fast enough to show them. There is no universal ideal frame rate: the best target depends on the game, the display, and the performance or power trade-offs you are willing to accept.

What do FPS and monitor Hz mean?

FPS (frames per second) is how many frames a game-rendering system completes each second. Hz (hertz) is how often a display refreshes each second. They describe different parts of the process: a game might render at a rate above or below the monitor’s refresh rate, and the two rates can vary independently. NVIDIA’s FPS explainer describes how those rates relate.

A 144 Hz monitor does not make a game render at 144 FPS. It gives the display the capacity to refresh up to 144 times per second; the game and hardware still determine how many frames are rendered. Conversely, rendering more frames than a display can refresh does not mean every one will be shown as a separate full refresh. If you are considering a high-refresh-rate gaming monitor, match its capabilities to the frame rates your system and games can sustain—it will not increase GPU performance.

What changes when you play at higher FPS?

Motion can look smoother

More frequent frames give the display more visual updates over the same period, which can make movement look smoother. How noticeable that is varies with the game, the player, the display, and how consistently frames arrive. NVIDIA’s 60-versus-240 examples illustrate the relationship between update frequency and perceived motion, but they are an explanation from a hardware vendor, not proof that every player will experience the same improvement.

Controls may feel more responsive

At a higher frame rate, the wait between rendered updates can be shorter, which can help an on-screen response keep up with player actions. But FPS is only one part of the delay from an input to the image appearing: input handling, CPU and GPU work, queued frames, and display presentation also matter. Microsoft’s DirectX input-latency guidance explains how input processing and graphics presentation can affect that path.

System latency is not network ping. System latency is delay between an action and its display; ping describes network communication delay. A higher frame rate does not by itself fix a slow network connection.

Is 60 vs. 120 vs. 240 FPS really that different?

There is no single threshold at which higher FPS stops mattering for everyone. A 2026 NVIDIA Research study tested 44 participants in a custom first-person-shooter game across rates from 7 to 500 FPS. In that particular study, performance improved sharply from 7 FPS and leveled off after about 90 FPS, while participants’ smoothness ratings continued to improve through 500 FPS. Those findings describe one game and study—not a universal performance target or a promise that every player will notice the same gains. Read the study and its conditions.

For a practical comparison, ask whether a higher target improves your experience enough to justify the hardware effort it takes to reach it. A competitive shooter may make responsiveness and motion clarity priorities; a slower-paced game may not make the difference as important to you. The display must also be capable of presenting more frequent updates for a high rendered rate to translate into a visibly higher refresh experience.

Why consistent frame pacing matters

An average FPS figure can hide uneven delivery. If frames arrive at irregular intervals, motion may look less stable than at a lower but steadier rate. Microsoft makes this point in its mixed-reality guidance for HoloLens applications: it says frame-rate consistency is as important as a high frame rate and that fluctuating rates can be more noticeable than a consistent lower rate. That is useful technical guidance, but its specific context is mixed reality rather than a controlled result for every game.

A 2024 NVIDIA Research study tested frame-time variations of 4–12 milliseconds around typical rates from 30–240 Hz. Its results found that 12 ms variations degraded perceived smoothness, while the effect diminished at 4 ms variations. The finding supports treating frame pacing as a separate consideration from the average FPS number; it does not establish a universal threshold for all systems or games. See the study details.

What are the trade-offs of chasing higher FPS?

  • Motion and responsiveness: Higher rates can provide more frequent visual updates and may make controls feel quicker, but results depend on the complete rendering and presentation path.
  • Consistency: A stable rate can look better than a higher rate that fluctuates. Consider frame pacing, not just the peak or average shown by an FPS counter.
  • Display limits: The monitor’s refresh rate and the game’s rendered FPS are separate. A high-refresh display is relevant if you want to view more frequent updates, but it does not create them.
  • Power and resources: Rendering more frames can use more system resources and power. Microsoft’s Xbox energy-efficiency guidance advises using lower rates for many animated menus when a high rate is unnecessary. It describes 30 Hz as suitable for customization elements that do not need snappy response, 60 Hz for some menus that do, and little need for 120 FPS menus. This is menu-design guidance, not a gameplay recommendation.

How should you choose an FPS target?

  1. Start with the game and how you play. Prioritize smooth motion and responsiveness if they materially improve your experience; a lower target may be sufficient when they do not.
  2. Check your display’s refresh rate. Its Hz rating describes refresh capacity, not the FPS your computer or console will render.
  3. Look at consistency as well as the average. A steady rate may feel smoother than a higher but erratic one.
  4. Balance the target against performance and power. If sustaining a higher rate requires more resources than the improvement is worth to you, use a lower target where the game or platform allows it.
