Highguard permanently shut down on March 12, 2026. Wildlight Entertainment announced the closure on March 3, saying it had been unable to build a sustainable player base for long-term support. Before service ended, the studio released one final update, adding Warden Koldo, the Switchback weapon, account progression, and skill trees.

Why did Wildlight shut down Highguard?
The studio said it had not built a sustainable player base to support the game long term. That is Wildlight’s stated reason; the announcement does not establish a more detailed financial or management explanation.
Wildlight also reported that more than 2 million players had stepped into Highguard’s world since launch. This is the studio’s cumulative player figure, not an independently audited count of active, concurrent, or retained players. The announcement’s player figure does not provide retention data or a breakdown of how many people were still playing at shutdown.

What was in Highguard’s final update?
The final update, called the “Farewell Tour” in the official patch announcement, added new playable content as well as account-wide progression systems. Wildlight’s final-patch notes describe account levels from 0 through 100, with players earning skill points to spend in a Warden skill tree.
New Warden: Koldo
Koldo was the new Warden introduced in the final update. Highguard’s official announcement named Koldo alongside the new weapon.

- Fight faster and smarter with new and returning techniques, like the perfect shield and directional air dodge
- Face off in 2-4 player battles, or play against the computer
New weapon: Switchback
The Switchback is a long-range, double-barrel shotgun with different behavior depending on how it is used: hipfire functions as a shotgun, while aiming down sights shifts it into a marksman-rifle role. The official weapon description presents it as a hybrid rather than a conventional shotgun.
Account progression and skill trees
The update introduced account progression from level 0 to 100. Players earned skill points as they progressed and could spend them in a skill tree for a Warden. These system additions were separate from the new character and weapon: they added progression and customization to the game’s existing roster.

What the announcement does—and does not—establish
Wildlight’s public statements explain the shutdown in terms of the studio’s view of the game’s long-term sustainability and confirm the content of the last update. They do not provide player-retention figures, revenue totals, or a detailed financial analysis. The studio’s 2-million-player statement should therefore be read as a cumulative reach figure, not proof that the game had that many active users.
