There is no official beast-to-vivarium chart, and the available guides do not establish that any species needs a particular enclosure. Choose by scenery or collection organization: for example, group woodland creatures in the Forest, marsh-themed beasts in the Swamp, or breeding pairs together. Each vivarium holds up to 12 beasts and four species, so use additional environments to make room rather than treating one as the “right” habitat.

These are suggestions for presentation, not exclusive habitat rules. You can instead sort by species, appearance, breeding pairs, or the materials you want to collect.
What the vivarium environment changes
Community-maintained pages and player discussions describe observed preferences and interactions among beasts, but they do not provide an official rules table. The Harry Potter Wiki characterizes these reactions as not directly affecting gameplay, and Reddit reports are anecdotal. The available sources do not establish that a preferred biome improves material yield, breeding outcomes, or another reward. Treat behavior as an observation or cosmetic consideration, not a proven optimization mechanic. If you want to check a suspected preference, watch the beasts in your enclosure and move them if their behavior or the display does not suit you.

Capacity and unlocking more space
GameSpot’s 2023 guide states that each vivarium holds up to 12 beasts and no more than four species. Additional biomes provide more collection space, but each has the same stated limit. Moving a species between enclosures can help when you reach the four-species cap.
The game’s four environments are Forest, Coastal, Swamp, and Mountain. The Forest is introduced during the early beast tutorial; the others become available as you progress through Deek’s quest chain. GameSpot’s guide places the Coastal biome with The Plight of the House-Elf after The High Keep, the Swamp after the preceding quest progression associated with Foal of the Dead, and the Mountain after Phoenix Rising, which follows Niamh Fitzgerald’s Trial. Check your in-game quest log for the next step in your save.

GameFAQs’ beast guide lists the following species and materials. Wild den locations can help you find creatures, but a beast’s wild region does not prove that it prefers a similarly themed vivarium.
- Diricawl: Clagmar Coast, Hogwarts Valley, Marunweem Lake, North Hogwarts, and Poidsear Coast; yields Diricawl Feathers.
- Fwooper: Feldcroft and Hogwarts Valley; yields Fwooper Feathers.
- Giant Purple Toad: Forbidden Forest, Hogsmeade Valley, Manor Cape, Marunweem Lake, North Ford Bog, and South Sea Bog; yields Toad Warts.
- Graphorn: Clagmar Coast; the guide says rescue follows the final Keeper Trial and requires defeating it; yields Graphorn Horn.

Rescuing and caring for beasts
Use the Nab-Sack to rescue beasts and bring them to the Room of Requirement. Feeding and brushing them lets you collect their magical materials. If keeping the collection manageable is more important than a visual theme, group species by the materials you want to gather or keep breeding pairs together.
