Hōlei Sea Arch at Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park has collapsed into the Pacific. The National Park Service (NPS) says the exact time is unknown: the arch was standing on September 23, 2026, and had fallen by the night of September 27. The agency’s immediate warning is to stay out of closed areas and away from unstable cliff edges.
What happened to Hōlei Sea Arch?
The arch, which stood about 90 feet high, collapsed into the ocean on the park’s remote coastline. NPS announced the collapse on October 1, 2026; the agency’s account places it sometime between September 23 and September 27, but does not give a precise time. The NPS announcement and Associated Press coverage report the same interval.
Did Tropical Storm Nolo cause the collapse?
That has not been established. NPS says the collapse could have happened while the park was temporarily closed during Tropical Storm Nolo, but it does not identify the storm as the cause. Hawaiʻi Public Radio reported that park officials had not said whether Nolo’s conditions, including high surf, contributed. The timing alone does not prove a storm connection.
The coastline had a history of instability: earthquakes during the 2018 Kīlauea eruption and summit collapse damaged nearby cliffs, and newly observed cracks prompted closure of the original viewing area in January 2020. Massive surf from Tropical Storm Darby later that year broke a piece from the arch’s lower section. These events provide context, not a confirmed trigger for the 2026 collapse. Hawaiʻi Public Radio’s report addresses the uncertainty over Nolo’s role.

Why is the park warning visitors to stay away?
NPS says the coastal cliffs drop vertically into the ocean and pose a serious fall hazard. The agency reports that people have entered the closed area near the former arch site, putting themselves and first responders at risk of falling and drowning. Its instruction is direct: “Visitors are required to stay out of closed areas and away from cliff edges which are unstable and can collapse without warning.”
Do not cross a closure or approach the edge for a closer look or a photograph. The warning concerns unstable ground and a fall into the ocean; equipment cannot make entry safe.

Can visitors still see the arch, and is the old viewing area open?
The arch is gone, and the former site is in a closed, hazardous cliff area. A safer viewing area opened in March 2020, about 1,000 feet past the gate at the end of Chain of Craters Road, set back from the cliff and marked with orange stanchions and rope. That archived announcement describes the arrangement at the time; it does not confirm that the area remains open or accessible after the collapse. Check current Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park notices before planning a visit, and follow posted closures and staff instructions. The 2020 announcement is available on the NPS site.

NPS described the arch as approximately 550 years old. The figure is an estimate, not a precise formation date. The agency called its collapse “the latest transformation of the park’s remote and rugged coastline.”
