Virginia Tech lost to Pittsburgh 35–33 on October 2, 2026, after officials ruled John Love’s 36-yard field-goal attempt with three seconds left no good. Fan-posted video angles sparked claims that the Hokies were “robbed,” but the available reporting does not establish that the kick was good or that officials made the wrong call.
What happened on the final play?
At Lane Stadium in Blacksburg, Love attempted a 36-yard field goal with three seconds remaining. Officials ruled the kick no good, leaving Pittsburgh with a 35–33 win. FOX Sports reported the final score and the attempt details on October 3, 2026: Pittsburgh survives Virginia Tech 35-33 after late field-goal miss.
Was the kick good?
The reports available do not settle whether the ball passed inside the left upright. Videos shared by fans seemed to show different things from different positions: some viewers thought the ball went inside, while other angles appeared consistent with the no-good ruling. OutKick described the footage as ambiguous; it did not establish the ball’s path through an independent video analysis. OutKick’s report on the disputed kick
A camera angle can be misleading when it does not show the ball in relation to the upright plane, particularly if the ball is at or above the uprights. Crowd reactions or a kicker’s reaction cannot, by themselves, prove where the ball traveled.

Why wasn’t the kick reviewed?
OutKick reported that the kick was not reviewable because the ball passed above the uprights. Its account quotes the NCAA replay provision as allowing review of field-goal attempts when the ball is ruled below or above the crossbar, or inside or outside the uprights while lower than their tops; it also says a ball higher than the uprights as it crosses the end line may not be reviewed. The report’s explanation is that Love’s kick fell into that last category.
The NCAA’s football playing-rules page provides rulebooks and a 2026 instant replay case book. The precise 2026 provision and how it applies to this kick’s trajectory are not independently established in the cited coverage, so the reported replay explanation should not be treated as an independently confirmed ruling. NCAA and NFL replay language should not be assumed to be identical.

Did Virginia Tech get “robbed”?
“Robbed” captures a fan reaction, not a verified finding of officiating error. The final result was recorded as a Pittsburgh win, and the attempt was ruled no good. Disagreement over social-video angles does not establish that the ruling was incorrect.

A secondary page republishing a report attributed to the New York Post quotes Virginia Tech head coach James Franklin as saying: “To be honest with you, from my angle, I don’t know.” The page also says Franklin praised Love and noted that the officials’ ruling was final.
