No—the August 2024 Steam listing change was not evidence that Team Cherry had announced a Silksong beta. The package label was real, but contemporary reports said the change came from Steam’s backend and affected thousands of other games and apps too.
What did the August 2024 Silksong update show?
On August 27, 2024, a Steam listing change showed a package named “Hollow Knight: Silksong for Beta Testing.” That label prompted speculation that Team Cherry was preparing a beta, but it did not establish that the developer had announced one. Dexerto’s report covered the change and the ensuing rumor.
Why was it called a false alarm?
GamesRadar+ reported that Valve made the change as part of a broad Steam backend update, not as a Team Cherry announcement. It said the same change affected 55,049 other games. That is GamesRadar’s reported count, not a Valve statistic independently verified by these reports. Dexerto separately described the change as affecting more than 55,000 other apps.
The key distinction is between a package label appearing in Steam’s data and a developer announcing a test. A beta-labelled package or branch, by itself, does not confirm a public beta or explain who initiated a particular change.

Did Silksong ever have beta testing?
Yes, but later beta activity is a separate event from the August 2024 listing change. SteamDB’s depot history lists the beta-testing package and later public-beta branch activity. In September 2025, Rock Paper Shotgun’s report in Steam’s publisher news feed described Team Cherry beta testing a later patch. That later patch testing does not retroactively make the 2024 backend change a developer announcement.

A listing change is a clue to investigate, not confirmation on its own. Check:

These checks help separate a platform-side data change from a confirmed developer test; they are practical guidance, not a stated Valve rule.
